Who ever thought you could blow out your knee playing kickball? This past Saturday I was playing in a kickball tournament when a guy kicked a monster fly ball to me. I could tell to ball was going over my head so I turned and burned. Well as I turned and took about 3 or 4 strides, I heard two pops. I went down in pain clutching my right knee. I pain was immediate, but then went away as soon as it came. I picked myself up off the ground and walked it off. The knee felt sore and tender, but Im thinking that Im ok. Well later that day I put on a set of Traction Grips. When I was done I hopped on the bike to get the feel of the new grips, I was a little off balance, thus all of my weight and the bikes weight ended up on my right leg/knee. Once all of that weight shifted I felt the insides of my right knee moving around, along with some major pain. At this point my right knee nearly collapsed and I almost dumped the bike. As of now the knee, is supper swollen and I can barely bend it. There's not a whole lot of pain, just really tender a sore. I worst thing is that I can't ride my bike. My knee won't bend that far back!! Hopefully I just hyper-extended it and did'nt tear anything. I go to the Doc today, keeping my fingers crossed. Dam Kickball!!! |

Sounds like an ACL tear. Forward movement is fine, lateral will just about drop you like a stone in pain. Hope that's not the case for you, good luck. 18 years of competitive baseball...peewee, h.s. and college ball...I got hurt fishing. |

Never had a problem with the ACL. I have dislocated my left knee twice and right knee once. All three times the pain was unbareable until the doc put it back in. The last time I had to be put under to put back in place. But when back the pain goes away. ON the last one, I was unable to bend my knee back because the kneecap kept trying to pop when bending. Had to wear a brace to keep the knee cap from moving for two weeks with bike riding and leg curls. I feel for you because knee pain is the worst I have had. My last knee problem was from walking in the woods and stepped on a tree stump. |

Go in and ask for a MRI. That will tell you everything. I have knee problems as we speak that I have been avoiding. Another way is to to drain the swelling. If they get clear fluids. Chances are its a bad sprain. If they get blood though. Then you have some tears. Most of the time they want to send you through X Rays that don't and won't show you anything other then breaks or fractures. Have you been getting the sweats real bad at night. I did and so did my Brother. We both messed up are knees just a couple months apart. |

Definetly sounds like ACL, possibly with a meniscal tear (cartilage). I did this back in December. Took a digger on some ice. Heard the pop, and went down. Not a pain that I want to experience again! I had the surgery at the end of April. MRI is in order. Go see an Orthpod that specializes in sports injuries. Tell me, what does it feel like to go up and down stairs? If it was anything like mine, |

Well I saw the Doc today. He said that I probably tore my ACL or meniscus, or both. I have an MRI tomorrow. You guys ever had your knee drained!? Holy shat did that hurt, I was cussing at the Doc the whole time, while he was swearing right back at me. I guess that his tactic to put you at ease, it was pretty hilarious after the fact. At least my knee bends back far enough to be placed on the peg. I guess a little bit of pain is worth being able to ride. |

Adam, Didn't that Suck??? I take it they drew blood instead of fluid??? It'll get better as you go now. They'll maybe start getting you to do some exercises do strengthen it a bit before surgery. Hope ya feel better. I know it sucks. |

Hopefully it's not too bad. Might be able to get away with a scope of it rather than cutting you open. Also an MRI won't be very clean while your knee is still swollen. With my right knee it took about a week for a clear shot. I've blown each. I feel your pain Bone... |

Knee drained with a needle the size of a pencil........sucked! Stint/catheter was fun. Felt like I was taking a pee with the stream a 1/2 inch in diameter. Thought I would be in a pool of piss, when actually there was none. |

Do you guys stretch before you play or is this a let's have fun get blitz and play kick ball kind of thing? Yeah we stretch out and warm up, but with a beer in hand. Nobody over the age of 12 should play kickball I would ask you to try it, but I figure being 54 yrs old may just be a bit too old. It gives you an excuse to go out drinking with the boys on a weekday, that's how I look at it. Don't knock it until you've tried it. We even play dodge ball here and there. That's what we do here in Wisconsin, Kickball or Softball, along with a nice cold refreshing Miller product. Good times!!! I take it they drew blood instead of fluid??? Yeah it was blood. I figure about a half a cup. It was pretty nasty! |

Well at least I haven't wasted my knees on other sports. Dirt bikes own mine. I doubt that makes it less painful or troublesome. And really, I'm no more a hero for it. |

Bads1 Thanks for asking! It's almost been a week since the injury, and the knee is feeling a bit better. The knee feels really loose and unstable. The only pain that I have is a throbbing/aching pain, unless I tweak it, and then I have to yell out at the Gods. I still don't have nearly my full range of motion. My MRI results are in, but I can't get them until Monday during my next Doc appointment. I tried to get the results today, but my Doc is already gone for the day, must be nice. I'll post up on Mon with the verdict. |

Yeah they don't let Nurses by law aloud to give patients results of tests. He /she'll review them with you and tell what He/she thinks your best alternatives are. (Message edited by bads1 on August 22, 2008) |

I got the results of the MRI back today. Torn ACL and meniscus tear. The Doc's recommendation is to get the meniscus repaired, but leave the ACL alone? He asked me what my activity level was. Granted that I’m not out playing football and running track every day, but I have my moments. My choice of career is either going to be law enforcement or fire fighting, so these are two jobs that require you to be active and physical. The Doc thinks that I tore my ACL in the past, which could have been a possibility in High School football or 4 years in the USMC as a Grunt. I just got done reading that a torn ACL will/may lead to a meniscus tear. Could that have just happened? I've always thought this knee was a bit weak for some reason. Matter of fact the day I injured the knee, on two separate occasions while I was running the bases, I almost fell straight on my face because the knee almost gave out on me. Know that I’m more informed on this subject, I believe it may have been my femur and tibia trying to separate outward from one another (ACL prevents this), like a hyperextension. As of right now, about once or twice a day this happens. I’m afraid that I'll dislocate it? He's hesitant for the ACL repair because he does not want be to get arthritis in the knee (which he says will happen down the road) and second, the length of the rehab. I guess it's my choice in the end. I just figure that if I don't get the ACL repaired, this may happen again? Any thoughts or advice? |

Give this guys a call. He hangs out on KTMtalk.com. Not only is he a rider but a great surgeon. At the very least a second opinion. If you can get a copy of your MRI and any x-rays that might show damage before you contact him might be a good idea. I know he is in houston but from what I have read on KTMtalk he is worth the trip. He has helped out many people where the repair that was done to them or planned to be done would have resulted in permanent range of motion issues. After this guy they were back in most cases 100%. Especially if you want to stay active and possibly join the police force. Not sure if can view the ktmtalk forum without being a member but here is response from someone with a question about a partially torn ACL. "The partially torn ACL is usually a diagnosis made on MRI. The knee needs a good physical exam and particularly a KT-1000 exam (which at our clinic costs less than 100 bucks) If the knee is unstable it needs surgery, if it is stable, then it just needs some exercises. Typically tears of less than 50% need exercises only. Greater than that usually leads to an unstable knee and the need for reconstruction. " http://ktmtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=301172 |

Boney, Did I call it? I say have the ACL repaired/replaced. If you are going to choose to be a firefighter or LEO, you're going to NEED stability in that joint! The fears you have about what the ACL does is correct. It takes all four main ligaments to stabilize the knee joint. If one's out of whack or torn, then it puts undue strain on the remaining ones, which leads to instability and future problems. And, everything I've read and have been told by doctors, is that an ACL/meniscus injury that is left untreated will ACCELERATE the onset of Arthritis! The surgery DELAYS it! Makes sense doesn't it? Don't know where your Dr. is getting the idea that fixing it would cause problems! That makes no sense... The pain may have subsided, but your knee is shot, and will jeopardize your chances at passing the physical exam for your career. Want proof? Go up and down a flight of stairs quickly and report back here on how it felt. Now think about doing it with the added weight of full police riot or firefighting gear. Now add RUNNING the stairs to the mix! Tell the Dr. you want it fixed. Chances are it can be done arthroscopically. Take care of it now, or you'll regret it on down the road. I'm almost 6 months out from the EXACT same surgery. Stairs are no longer an issue. My kids laugh at "Dad's dead man parts in his knee" (I got the "allograft" made from cadaver tissue - less healing time. The graft can be taken from your hamstring tendon, which is common, or from your patellar tendon, which is strong as h*ll but has a long healing time.) Google "ACL Surgery". Tons of info. There are videos of the procedure as well! (Message edited by elf on August 26, 2008) |
