Geeez, glad someone remembers that book. Seems we've been heading that way for about 5 or 6 years now. "Dept. of Homeland Security" was like a name right out of the book. And Double Speak has certainly become the norm, worse than political correctness. |

There are many books out there that have become "classics" and it is the result of an evolving educational system that we are moving from them to works that I feel are lesser. I admit they may be more timely and popular (the hope being that students will actually read the assigned novel) but the level of mature and creative thought is often lost. Literary topics like allegory, symbolism, theme and plot development are now taught in isolation with only minimal examples. The real tragedy is that many college students will graduate with advanced degrees with out having read: Of Mice and men 1984 The Badge of Courage Siddhartha The Stranger Great Expectations The Scarlet Letter The Old Man and the Sea etc. etc. etc. |

Of Mice and Men was required reading when I was in 8th grade. 1984 I think was 9th. |

Animal Farm Atlas Shrugged Walden Ulysses Canterbury Tales Don Quixote Call of the Wild To Kill a Mockingbird Actually none of the books I read that were assigned for school, did I find anything of merit that I carry with me today. All the books that influenced me seemed to be banned. |

All the books that influenced me seemed to be banned. Man, thats the damned truth. 1984 is one of my favorite books, seems almost all too real now. Looks like ill have to dive into that one again. |
