OktoberFAST...

our place is open to company anytime after noon this Friday. the beer starts when you get here (if you're thru riding for the day), and the new BBQ starts heating up about 5:30.

Saturday morning we launch at 0800, with breakfast at the Ponderosa (believe it or not, Hop Sing still works there...), 7200-feet high in the Sierras at about 10 ayem.

if you can't make Saturday's ride (it'll come in at about 225 miles, with approximately 4 gazillion corners), you're still welcome to live here Saturday night with us. the beer will still be flowing (i.y.t.r.f.t.d.) and the BBQ will be in full-honk.

Sunday's ride will be shorter, sorta, not really, on several of the roads that served as worthy backups for last year's partially snowed-out All-Cal BRAG route. for those of you needing to get back to the L.A. area on Sunday, the ride will end up with you pointed in the right direction and closer to home than when you started the day.

and for those who can hang another night (geez, get an effin' life), the back half of Sunday will have us back up in the Sierras on yet more of The Good Stuff, including a stint on the Lion's Trail, with (you guessed it) the BeerBQ awaiting back home (i.y.t.r....well, you get the idea.)

altho not etched yet in stone, i think Monday will find who ever is left pointed north again, maybe via California Hot Springs, so that i can get dr. Steve aimed in the right direction. who knows, might even make Sequioa and Kings Canyon on Monday...

it's really easy to say, when one is banging a ride drum like this, that it's all gonna be unforgettable.

well who knows, maybe it WILL be.

Ferris,

Is that dark beer?

If you make it to Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP, do me a favor. Stop by Ash Mountian ranger station just inside the gate there (outside of Three Rivers) ask for for John Zigler or Tammy Jennings. Tell them your friends of me and that I said hi and that you are in need of beer(not bear) and they will take care of ya!

dark, light, Mexican, American, German, and Dutch (so far). oh, and i picked up a half-rack of Pumpkin Ale (no lie!) just for the grin factor.

if we make it to S/KC NP i WILL tell 'em you sent me. and...if i end up in jail as a result, YOUR name will be mud, mister! :-)

Sounds like a groove cutting good time! Wish I could make it, have a wedding that I have to photograph that weekend. :(

Tammy and John are great people, Tammy use to work in the Fire Management Office (where I use to work) and John was the helitack foreman.

My name mud? You have called me much worse Ferris!

for anyone who might be runnin' late on Saturday, here's the first leg of the ride, to give you a decent chance of joining up with us.

i hesitate a little bit to post this, out of fear that if you ARE playin' catch up you'll ride in an unsafe manner doing do. please don't. it ain't worth it.

we're lauching from Wofford Heights, on the shimmering shores of Isabella Lake, at 0800, and hoping to hit Ponderosa for breakfast at about 1000. we should be in Springville (gas and good cell phone coverage) about 1130 or noon.

if you haven't acquired us by then, stop trying, and meet us back at Wofford Heights. Denise will be home all day, with phones close at hand. if something comes up, leave a message on my cell and EBear's cell (we'll be checking for messages when we can), AND call Denise and let her know what's up.

Oh yea, I'm haulin our bikes up in the trailer since we're getting a near dark start. I've got an inflato-mattress and a sleepin bag, will be sleepin in the trailer like we always do when we go dirt bikin in the desert.

Now Forger, if you can find a place for him inside, that would be good, otherwise I have to share my mattress with him in the trailer. That's usually easy enough after a number of beers going to sleep, but he's just uglier than sin in the mornin, so find him a spot, OK Ferris? :)

Jim and Shel, as usual i been bad, BUT i been good.

at exactly 5:44 p.m. PDT this afternoon, me 'n Denise 'n Scott Page, who was the first guest to arrive for Oktoberfast, tipped bottles together in your honor, and i immediately sprinted to the computer to tell you as much.

the "bad" part is that i've had THREE beers already (Negra Modelo, thank you very much), and i promised above that we'd toast you guys on the FIRST beer.

sigh.

ummm, i KNOW you'll understand.

btw, there's an ice-chest full of NM's that are in some serious danger tonight...

wish both of you were here :)

All I can say is .... THANKS!!!

Kudos to Ebear also for all his work, too.

Doing the Western Divide loop totally rocked. Saturday's ride definitely made for one of the best days I have had this year.
To celebrate, I am running out today to buy the Boston CD.

Oktoberfast
October 11-13, 2003
Ferrisville, California USA

Welcome Hooligans to the first annual (hopefully…) Oktoberfast! WOO frikkin’ HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’d like to thank Eric Barrows, aka EBear, for spearheading this little soirée here in the beautiful southern Sierra. I came up with the name (hold the applause, please), but the ride is all EBear’s idea, and he and his friend Cheryl have put a lot of effort into making this a reality.

And I’d like to thank all of you for being here this weekend. It means a lot to have you here as our guests at the fabulous yet intimate and oh-so-casual ThunderDome, and I hope this weekend is full of good rides, good times, and good friendship for us all.

Lastly, I’d like to thank my friend Denise, for putting up with all my shit. How she does it is beyond me, but I am NOT asking any questions!

Today’s ride will come in at about 200 miles, and will have us on some bitchin’ sportbike roads, in some of God’s Own Country. Shortly we’ll be riding at over 7,000 feet of elevation on a road that was originally plotted for last year’s All-Cal BRAG Rally but was snowed out the night before, and we’ll stop for a moment or two to get up close and personal with the largest living things on the planet (besides EBear, that is…), the giant Sequoias.

The route that we’re doing today, as well as for tomorrow’s and Monday’s rides if you’re lucky enough to be able to hang that long, has been chosen for several reasons, and should be unforgettable regardless whether you like to ride at a brisk pace or prefer, instead, to ride at a more leisurely “sightseeing” pace. There are plenty of photo opportunities along the way, each day, and you are encouraged to ride in a manner that allows you to see and sense all that this great country of ours has to offer.

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now then, the heavy stuff.

Oktoberfast is NOT a race, timed event, or competition, in spite of the name of this intimate little gathering of friends. The name was chosen because it’s “catchy”, nothing more, nothing less, and in no way, shape, or form should it be construed as anything more than that. Oktoberfast is, at its core, a motorcycle tour.

You are expected to ride safely and legally, and within your individual limits, at all times. There is no onus to ride at, or anywhere near, the limit of your particular abilities, and no one will think any less of you if you choose to ride at a pace that could be considered “slow” by dickwad’s lame-assed definition. That’s a promise from me.

We will wait and “collect the troops” whenever necessary, especially at any turns or forks which take us in a new direction, so there is no need for anyone to ride faster than their normal comfort level in order to "keep up". We will NOT lose you. We WILL wait for you. You do NOT have to "keep up".

If for some reason you DO become inexorably separated, you’ll have detailed route sheets and maps in your possession, along with some contact phone numbers, which we’ll be handing out in a moment.

We are all adults here, and it is expected that you will all ride so as to protect YOUR safety, as well as the safety of your fellow riders, as well as the safety of the general public.

Passing vehicles, especially, should be done in a safe and courteous manner. If you’re passing another motorcycle, PLEASE be sure they know you’re there before you go by them, and give them plenty of room. Nobody likes to be startled, especially a fellow rider.

No passing on the right, please, and no passing in corners.

You owe it to the folks on the road to keep tabs of what’s going on behind you. Check your mirrors often. If you’re holding someone up, it’s no big deal. Simply ease to the right of your lane and casually motion them by with your left hand. This lets them know that YOU know that they’re there, and lets them know they’ve got your “permission” to go by. So simple and easy even a child could do it.

I could go on and on ("No, Ferris, no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!";), but you get the idea.

Ride to lean. Ride to live. Ride to laugh. Any effin’ questions? :)

Now then, the REAL heavy stuff.

This past weekend, at the BRAG Southwest Torque Fest in Arizona, there were two serious motorcycle crashes, one of which claimed the life of a fellow rider. From the accounts it appears that the first crash, on Friday, was alcohol-related. Impaired senses and excessive speed put this individual in the hospital with some pretty serious injuries, and several innocents were placed in mortal danger through no fault of their own.

The fatal crash on Saturday, according to the accounts, happened to an individual who was consistently riding at a pace that was troubling to his peers, and he paid the ultimate price. In the process he took out another rider, who fortunately was able to walk away from the crash, and left behind a grieving girlfriend and three heartbroken children.

As I’ve followed the posts on the internet this week regarding this tragedy, I have pondered at length what to say to you this morning. I love this sport and the people involved. I ask all of you to consider your safety, and the safety of those around you, as you ride this weekend. This stuff should be fun, not tragic.

With due respect to the fact that we’re all adults, I am asking several favors of you this morning.

First, I ask that you not pass me during any of the formal, “organized” riding that we do this weekend. This is for your safety. I know the roads we’ll be riding, and I will set a pace that hopefully everyone will enjoy.

Second, I ask that you consume no alcohol or illegal drugs during any of the riding that we do this weekend. There will be beer aplenty each day when we get back here to the ‘Dome, but I cannot, in good conscience, allow the consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs while we’re riding. There is too much at stake.

I’ve done this stuff since 1996, and have never before implemented rules like these. I hope you understand why I must now. If you don't understand, that’s okay. But if you don’t agree, you can’t ride with us.

Now then, the legal crap.

By signing your name and dating below, you:

1) Agree to agree to the “No Passing Ferris” and “No Drugs or Alcohol When We’re Riding” rules as stated previously.
2) Agree to ride legally, safely, and within your limits at all times.
3) Acknowledge that you’re an adult and aware of the inherent dangers and risks that we face as motorcycle riders, and acknowledge and accept that these risks will be present during Oktoberfast.

And…

4) You agree to hold harmless everybody involved in putting this shindig together -- whether that somebody is private, corporate, or otherwise -- for anything that may happen this weekend that might cause you pain, anguish, suffering, loss of income, hangover, or hemorrhoids.

Cool?

“Right on, Ferris, I agree!”

Ferris,

Ummm...... I coined the term "Alpha Snorer" and bestowed that honor on Scott Paige. Victor and Scott filled the living room with a two part harmony snore cacaphony. NO ONE has had the courage nor guts to step forward and accuse me of snoring at your digs. I know I didn't hear myself snoring and I WAS there.... although I did wake up in the morning with a raspy throat.

BTW... the first Boston album truly rocks! Thanks so much for sharing it with us.
