Changing a 12 primary drive to a 9, How hard is it? I've got the parts, the Service manual and the desire.... sounds like I could F the whole thing up. Any tips? |

I've done it on my old tuber-well not the switch but taken the whole pack out and replaced the crank seal-you should be good. Like spidy said, get a foot long breaker and stand on it-lefty tighty, righty loosey |

Dumb question: what do you gain by this? |

Do you have snap ring pliers? Probably the most difficult thing to remove in this whole process, and it is cake. Good advice about the seal. It is not hard at all. Don't forget the steps in retightning the primary cover. Other then that, I don't think you could F it up. What ya gonna do with your 12 chain? I have done the conversion and ready to switch back. |

Don't forget the updated torque spec on the crankshaft nut, 240-250 ft-lbs IIRC. Make sure you have an appropriate torque wrench on-hand before you start. My Sam's Club variety only went up to ~150 or so; I was able to borrow a 250 ft-lb rated one at Autozone for free. |

Dumb question: what do you gain by this? Good question, I was wondering why also, is it worth pain for the gain. |

A significant number of Uly riders have changed to the XB9 primary gearing to get lower overall gear ratios. According to those who have changed, it makes the bike much more tractable at low speeds and the engine doesn't seem to mind the extra ~500 RPM at highway speeds at all. |

I am doing this on my Race Bike. What I am looking to gain is the hole shot and more drive out of the corners. I have tried down shifting and its just a little to much. I had the a$$ end try to pass the front a couple of times. If my lap times get better then it was a good move.... if not I'll go back to the 12 set up. I may just puss out and let the dealer do it tomorrow while I am teaching Riders Edge. |

If I can find the time, or ifnyer not in a hurry, I can help. I wish they made something similar for the 9's as I felt the same when we were at Mid-O. wasn't hitting the rev limit on the back straight, and the gearing was just a little tall in the keyhole, everywhere else I just needed to get better. Which is probably true for the keyhole too, but I still probably wouldn't hit rev limit on that straight. I was going to put on a chain drive (and I still might as I have all the parts) but I'm still digging the belt. I don't think you need to replace the crank seal-I just did it on my tuber because it was blowing primary juice all over my tire... |

If your doing it on a race bike, more power to ya. My top end dropped from 13? to exactly 128ish, before it was bouncing off the rev limiter really hard, and it was still pullin REALLY hard! One of the reasons I am thinking of going back, because it is not a race bike. The new ratio puts my RPM range at cruise in the 34-3600 range(50-55mph). Right about the spot that the Race ECM starts playing with value's. I have noticed that I can go out and bang on the bike for hours and the fan will run maybe a minute after shutting it off. If I just cruise, the fan comes on while riding and seems like it never wants to shut off. So for the Track, big thumbs up. The street with race computer and pipe, the jury is still out. I learned a little about the chain drive from Coolice when I was at Road America. It will toast your right side bearing (happened to me) and it will make the mounting hole in the wheel out of round after some time.... I loved the chain but I'm sticking with the belt for now.... I NEED TIRE MONEY! |

Tell me aboot it. I'm on my third rear and second front tire this year. When I win the lottery tonight, I'll sponsor your tires... |

Well... I had it done while I taught Riders Edge today.... all I can say is, WOW! The hole shot is mine.... if I can keep the front end down in 1st and 2nd! I can't wait to get back on the track! |

Do you think you'll lose any end of the strait speed with that set up Mark? See you Aug 9th! |

I wasn't hitting the rev-limiter in fifth gear before so I think I will be good to go. If I can get some more drive out of turn 4 and 13 I think I should shave some time off my laps. We will see..... |

Cool. Plus if they reconfigure the track and slow it down a bit like someone was telling me last weekend it'll help even more. |

Ceejay: I wish they made something similar for the 9's They do. It's called the Blast. Someone who has a Blast went with the 9's hardware to give it lower RPMs for the highway. |

I'm with CeeJay! I wish I could easily gear down my XB9SX just a shade. The 9sx in particular should have been geared lower from the factory. I could care less what my 9sx does above 100 mph. It's wasted capability. So, can the blast primary guts be swapped out to a 9? Is it still a triple chain / triple sprocket setup? Would it work with the XB primary tensioner? That could be *very* cool... (Message edited by reepicheep on July 27, 2008) |

Reep-I'll look into it. As I was typing this up I was thinking about checking into an 883 also...I'm also thinking about the possibility of switching out rear sprockets with a rotax powered buell(probably the r-70t) which will changed it from a 2.41 ratio to a 2.59 which may be too high... |

Yes, it's a triple chain/sprocket setup. LaFayette Jenne' (Buellistic) put the XB9 parts including the cover into his Blast. You could look for him here and send him a PM. I'm sure he'd be happy to give you lots of details. Um, I just read his email he sent me a while back. He put XB12 parts in his Blast. |

I wonder if that primary chain is a standard part... maybe you could fabricate a new primary ratio by just getting 3 cheap sprockets and some simple spacers, and drill a few holes... |

Somewhere I saw a lineup of 9 different sizes of the primary sprocket assembly. It's one of the BadWeb sponsors ... |

Changing a 12 primary drive to a 9, How hard is it? Changing it back wasn't that bad.... BUT, now its being difficult to down shift from 4th to 3rd. Whats up with that? I adjusted the clutch after the test ride and that helped but its not 100% yet. Any tips? |

Check primary chain adjustment and primary oil level. Either can affect shifting. |
