I received an update last night that there were to bad crashs, one on Friday and one on Saturday with a fatality on Saturday. anyone with more details??? | ||

Carey, My daughter got Al and his wife a room at a resort here in Phoenix. I just called there trying to find out the details. Al was at Chaos’s having his bike worked on, so I didn’t get to speak with him. She told me one non-fatal accident was in the Salt River Canyon area. There was nothing left of the bike according to her and quite a horrific seen. Meaning amazing anyone could get through something like that. The other sounded like it was in the middle of the Torque Fest ride. I’m guessing around Clifton or Morenci area. If I understood it correctly, it was someone running into other riders with a couple of them going underneath the guardrail. One was killed on the scene. She relayed one of the hurt individuals was local to Arizona and the other from Boston. Of course I haven’t verified any of this information. -JW: | ||

My very close friend was the guy who crashed in the Salt River Canyon on Friday. It appears as though he crossed the double yellow on a blind right hander. He slid down the left side of an oncoming pickup pulling a full size camper. He and the bike collided with the front left corner of the camper tore the camper apart as well as his X-1. The X-1's front end was completely tore off. The bike caught on fire and burnt to the ground. Nobody had an operational fire extinguisher. Now the condition of the rider. He is in ICU with multiple broken bones with the most damage to his lungs. One was punctured and they both collapsed, so he is currently on a ventilator until he is able to breath on his own again. Fortunately, there are no head or spinal injuries. If any of you are the praying type, please do so. His name is Jim. As far as the fatality goes, Jim Witt has the story pretty accurate as far as I have heard. This guy was riding with our group in the morning before lunch. He was riding a new XB12S and seemed to really be a confident rider. Pretty aggressive so maybe a little too confident. I know that was my buddies case. Anyway, It started out to be an extremely spectacular ride and I feel terrible for everyone involved and even the people who were not. They, I'm sure, had to have been affected just as much and I'm sorry for them that there trip to the southwest turned out this way. Chad Banning Phoenix | ||

The Saturday accident was heading south on 78 about 14 miles north of the intersection with 191. A vista view right hander decreasing radius downhill turn. Daryl was in second position, a guy on a white 9r was set up for the turn, when the 12s took him out from behind. Both bikes went into (stuck under) guard rail. I believe the 9r guy was from flag he suffered road rash on right knee (blue jeans) but went for exrays by emt truck. Of the two wrecks the Friday one looked way worse on scene. I just talked to Jim's wife and the doctors are going to do surgery on his wrist tonight and try weening him off the ventilator and see how he does. It's looking like he will come out of this alright. He is going to be in some major pain for a long time though. Dave, did most of the riders try to keep their heads up and continue on Sunday? | ||

A good size group was talking about heading up to the Petrified Forest National Park and the BRAG Photo guy was going to go along to document the great sites. As for me,I could not handle the possiblity of a third day and people going down. So I led a group of four out of towners on a slow ride on 260 to Payson then down 87 to fountain hills for a photo op at the fountain then on to Hacienda HD to return the one person's rental 9s (she needed to fly out at 4pm). We looked around at the Basement sale (not much Buell stuff) got some free food and drinks. Then escorted the other three back to 101S as they needed to join up with people in Chandler and I headed Home. The wife was very glad I was home safe and sound. I just wish everyone could have said the same. DAVE | ||

I believe the other bike in the Saturday accident was an X1 not a 9R. And yes they were riding pretty aggressive. Daryl was telling me at the last stop before the accident that he and the guy on the X1 were riding like a "Bat out of Hell". He really seemed to be enjoying himself. The rear tire of his 12S was pretty chewed up. The thing to focus on is that he went out doing something he loved to do.. ride hard. I just met Daryl Friday, but he seemed like a real good guy. He spent a good portion of Friday night helping Al work on his bike. Even though I just met Daryl I am saddened by the loss. | ||

I believe New Hampshere. He was single but had just got custody of his 14 year old daughter. He had a DNR card on him. No Erik was not at the event. Ok I am done posting for awhile DAVE | ||

One of the things that freaks me out the most about these events is that I took three pictures Friday morning at Chosa's. One was of all of the bikes in the lot. One was of Daryl's XB12 and the third was a close up of Jim's bike shining in the sunlight. He just had his bike finished. Polished tail section, swingarm, rocker box covers, motor mount, banke shifter and brake lever, oh and polished rear brake caliper mount. His wife told me he wrote on a piece of paper in the hospital, "bike?". She had to tell him he no longer had one. As you can imagine, it's wierd to have only taken pictures of the two main bikes that went down. | ||

I am so heartbroken over Daryl's passing. If anyone out there knows his family please pass on our greatest sympathy from Arizona. We love our roads and the ability to ride them year 'round. And I think, I can speak for everyone when I say we will never forget this past weekends events especially everytime we venture out to these area's of the state. Chad | ||

I'll start this post, my first on this forum, with the disclaimer that it'll make me look like an asshole. However, I feel that what I did this weekend cancels that out, so here goes... Both Daryl and Jim did this to themselves. The fact that they didn't kill or severely injure any other riders was luck for all involved. In Jim's case, the fact that he consumed at least a half pitcher of beer and then rode way too fast and passed too aggressively are what did him in. I was somewhat surprised at the idea of consuming alcohol in the middle of a day of riding, but I'm not anyone's mother, so I said nothing. Then, I watched as he rode out ahead of everyone and passed in places that made me wince. He was going to hard and that last corner ate him up. He went wide and is lucky he didn't take that truck head on or possibly injure the family that was inside. I then held is head for the next 75 minutes waiting for an ambulance while his bike burned. Shouldn't have happened. On Saturday, there was no alcohol, only blatant disregard. Daryl rode hard, too hard in some eyes, all day. At the last gas stop, other riders specifically said they were going to hang back because Daryl and others in the lead group were pushing too hard and scaring them. Then Murrae went around and told everyone to watch out for those hairpins when the view opened up. And sure enough, Daryl didn't pay any attention. He passed many of us like a bat out of hell and the next time I saw him, he'd planted his bike and that of a fellow rider firmly into the guard rail, along with his head. I very much dislike trying to suction blood from someone's airway with a siphon kit, playing MacGuyver and intubating them with a drinking straw, being forced to do CPR while their ribs crackle like Rice Krispies, looking into their fixed and dilated pupils while blood pours from every hole in their head. These are the type of things that ruin my "adventure". Frankly, I was very upset after both accidents. Then I was very pissed off and I still am. I'm thankful that the other rider was not more seriously injured. Unfortunately, in all the commotion, I didn't get his name (white X1). My feeling is: If you want to kill yourself, go do it some other way. These rides are for the rest of us to have fun and enjoy ourselves while riding in a safe and heads up manner. These accidents are the reason that we all have high insurance premiums, no respect from drivers or law enforcement, etc. I apologize for the graphic nature of this post, but I feel that it is necessary to shock the complacency from other riders. I just arrived from the torquefest a few hours ago. I am glad to hear that Jim from Fridays accident survived and I wish him a speedy recovery. He is a very lucky man as the pictures I will post show. If him or his family want some of the pictures I took to remind him with his close call please e-mail me. I ended up arriving at the scenes of both accidents. On Saturdays crash I decided to ride with the faster guys after a gas stop. When we missed our merge and had to do a U-turn I started leading a pack of the faster riders. I saw a guy on a white X1 and he was right on my butt I took the first 25mph turn real fast and leaned hard looked at in my mirror and he was still there. It only took one more turn for me to see he was a lot faster so I waved him by, then I let his friend go by who was also on a tube model. Then I looked and Daryl was right on my but ready to pass me. He got real close to me and I immediately waved him by. Then it only took a few minutes before I lost them. Ive scraped the stock pegs on both sides of my 9R so I know im not that slow but these guys were just that good, I could see them really riding hard. It took a minute to catch up and see both bikes down. I pulled over and the guy with the white X1 told me Daryl just hit him hard from behind. He told me he was a road racer and it seemed to me that Daryl got right on his but and was finding a way to pass. This was a down hill 25mph turn with a view that we were all warned about. The guy on the X1 looked fine other than torn jeans on one knee. As soon I looked over at Daryl lying there I knew it was bad since there was no movement whatsoever from him. I looked in his helmet and quickly backed off and got no further since it was too much for me. Some one who stopped called for help, and help got there rather quick. They tried for a good 40 minutes but they couldn’t save him. Not too many people knew Daryl I didn’t know him much other than he was a big Buell Enthusiast and owned a XB12S and a S3. He came to the torque fest on his own and had his bike shipped from New Hampshire. I first saw him at the assembly plant also on his own. If anyone thinks they know him I will post his picture below. I know we will all share our deepest sympathy for his family. I think it’s important for us to remember the difference between riding hard and riding dangerously for an ego thrill of being the fastest. No CJ, you are not an asshole. The truth must be told. If anyone who was there disagrees with CJ, they are welcome to post their views. For the reoord, I wasn't there. Motorcycling is a fun sport but you've got to be careful! Sorry, I don't mean to play the blame game. It's just very sad reading news like this. Please, everybody, everytime you jump on your bike ride carefully and be aware of the dangers! My sincere sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the rider who was lost and best wishes to the rider who was injured. | ||

Gods speed Daryl. My thoughts and prayers go out to all family and friends. Let's all try lo learn from this and ride smart. I think we all do things at one time or another that are dangerous and stupid, myself included. I know of at least 5 bike accidents within the last month, this adds 2 more. Times like this I think of giving up my bike. Let's all try to be a little more cautious, but still enjoy our rides. Don't use drugs or alcohol when riding, wear your helmet & safety gear and ride within your limits. I hate to loose anyone else or see them in pain. God Bless. | ||

Your descriptions of what caused these incidents are exactly why I no longer participate in these kinds of events.
