I got a chance to ride with Daryl both on Friday and again on Saturday. I am the one behind Sparky with the helmet off in Thad's photo. I also got a change to talk to Daryl at most of the stops along the way. What a nice guy and a real Buell enthusiast. I am sorry for your loss he will be missed.

Just about have it done. Need to address some proportional issues (no big deal) and it's off to the sign company on Monday. Plotted this out a few minutes ago so I could get an idea of the actual scale.

I can confirm your thoughts on the outpouring from the Buell community. There's nothing quite like it. Our thoughts are with you.
Henrik, thanks for getting the cross up but I did "finally" figure out how to attach it to an e-mail and sent it to Mr. Witt yesterday.
An observation about the bar and shield and the Buell logos... a lot of time pictures are hard to make out until your right on them. However, the intersection where Dad's cross stands has become a stopping point for many motorcyclists. I think they recognize the bar and shield and automatically know a rider went down there. The text is barely visible from the road but the Navy anchor and logo are easy to make out from quite a distance. Local riders have kept the cross cleared of forest undergrowth and wild flowers now cover the hillside between the cross and the road. I thought my buddy Mike Breedlove had been out there but he said every time he goes out to check on it someone has already been there. I suspect whoever has taken the time to perform this act of kindness is probably also a rider.

Update,
Finally got the roadside memorial cut out of 3/16" aluminum last week. Decided to make the puppy in two pieces. Meaning the vertical piece, then the bar and shield horizontal piece. Got it back from the powder coater this afternoon (looks tits). It's now at the silk-screener dude for the lettering and graphics. I was told they’d try and finish it on Friday. If so, I’m going to drive up to “where-ever” to stake the pup in the ground on Saturday. Need directions?

Go 10 miles south of Clifton and turn East on 78
Then about 14 miles up hill till you get to a look-out/pull-out on right side before the apex of a turn. Walk about 100 yards uphill of entrance to pull-out.
They were going downhill and made the sweeper to the left and were just getting set up for the right hand decreasing radius turn. The impact caused both bikes to lodge into/under the guard rail with Daryl's bike was the uphill one before the apex of the right hander and before the entrance to the look-out/pull-out. I am sure if you look at the above photos you will find the spot.

I'll say it again -- You're a good man Jim Witt.
Received a note this week from Tom in Anchorage where he mentioned another rider that had gone done recently. A quote about Frank:
quote:How sad. He was really a safe rider and one of the nicest guys that you would ever meet. A young sport bike rider that even liked my Buell too. Thought I would have a long relationship with him. I sure miss him, but his poor dad- he lost his son, best friend & "right arm" all at once. There were at least 300 people at his funeral, young, old, from all walks of life. He was much loved. Leaves a "wife", a 4 year old son and one on the way.

Dave, Chad, Al, whomever,
I know you told me 14 miles, just want to verfify the location (somewhat). Do you think we're talking about the red or yellow area on the map below? The red dot in the uppper right hand corner, where it says Finish, is the 14 mile marker, from the town of Three Way.
It's also not clear to me if they were ridding toThree Way (headed Southwest) or comming fromThree Way (headed Northeast)?

Hey I realize some of you don't want to talk about this any longer but I do. A couple of people (powder coater and the graphic shop) told me that someone might try and steal the roadside memorial (cuz it be sweet looking). WFT, never even entered my mind that some asshole would stoop so freaking low. It was suggested I dig a hole (post hole digger) pour concrete around the 3/4" steel roundstock rod that holds the memorial (plus a few other modifications I won't describe).
What'a you think?

I believe it is in the yellow zone not quite to the finish dot. I do not believe there are very many pull-out/overlooks on the right side as you go up the hill. Yes we were heading down 78 from 180 in New Mexico towards the 191 so that we could go up the 191 from Clifton back up to Alpine. Our last gas stop was in Glenwood on 180. The fast guys blew right past the turn off to 78. That is how I ended up just ahead of them and waved them past me just about three miles before the accident.
Your right I never would have thought someone would even think to steal a road side cross. What a low life. I just hope you are very wrong on that count.

JW, Are you putting this in front of a guard rail or behind it? Probably wouldn't be a good thing to hit if it was bolted down.
How about a plastic one at the scene and the original to the family?

Can't change the design now, it's finished. Just got a call from the graphics shop and picked up the puppy up a few minutes ago. In other words, it's finished! I've looked into Arizona's law for roadside memorials, so I know what I'm doing is legal. It will be placed "behind" the guardrail. The bottom of the cross will be just above the top of the guardrail.

I'ts definitely in the yellow area, not the red area...I remember the curves in the red area, because there is alot of elevation change there and Victor and I were down low and Sparky/Jen up high and we could see them up above us, and that was just several miles after we left the accident scene. We were heading Southwest when the accident occured. I'm pretty sure it's the first right-turning corner as you enter the yellow box going east to west. The road was much twistier after we left the accident scene than it was just prior to the accident. I think if you print those pictures Victor and I posted, you'll not have any problems locating it.

Okay,
Got up this morning at 3:00am and drove up to the crash site. Had a hard time digging the hole with the post-hole digger. Nothing but rock. Anywho, it's in concrete and finished. Couldn't get the images looking to good with XDAT and the filesize limitations.

Thank you all so much for doing this for Daryl. I saved the pictures on here but if anyone has one printed I would really appreciate it. Also, what is the bottom picture of? Maybe I am dense but I am not sure.
Me and the kids have been doing OK. Taking one day at a time, some are harder than others. Today we went to my daughters state cheerleading competition. Daryl really enjoyed watching the girls and supported them 100%. They all wore hair ribbons with his name on them. They took 3rd place in the state! He would have been so proud.
Does anyone have an update of the condition of the other rider involved in Daryl's accident? I would really like to know.
Thanks again for his memorial, I am glad I got to see it one here as I will probably never get the chance to see it in person, and would probably not even attempt it.

The pictures I've posted won't print worth a darn because they've been optimized to the maximum. I'll send you a few printed versions if you e-mail me your mailing address.
The last picture that I posted above, that you asked about, was nothing more than some pieces of a bike that were on the roadside. Looked like the foot-pegs and indicator light-bar.
I have no idea on the status of anyone else. Haven't heard from Chad either. I'm sure they'll chime in here soon.

Thought you all might like to see a picture of Daryl as I remember him. He always had a hugh smile on his face and was usually up to something.... He was quite a joker. This picture was taken on his B-day this year in North Conway, NH. He was on yet another BRAG ride, I think it was called "Carving the Northeast"
As you can see he was having a ball as usual (as he always was if it involved riding)

Hi James,
Thank you for inquiring about Jeff. He is definitely having a hard time. His PCL tendon is tore 2/3 in his right knee and his miniscus (sp?) cup is also tore in his right knee. He is scheduled for surgery to repair the miniscus cup in January. Doctors usually do not perform surgery on the PCL tendon and the ultimate outcome is a knee replacement in the coming years because there is a lot of play in the knee and it wears out.... ultimately his knee is permanently damaged. He has a torn rotator cuff and a very bad sprain in his right shoulder which will require surgery. He is in a lot of constant pain and cannot sleep without pain meds.
He is having a hard time because he does not have a motorcycle to ride ( which he couldn't ride anyway if he had one because of his injuries but I don't express this to him). His favorite time to ride is in the fall and he was very depressed when the days were so beautiful. I keep telling him there will be lots of other days in the future to ride. We are now dealing with the insurance company which is very frustrating and stressful.

Jim; if you talk to Jeff's family again, feel free to give them my info - sounds like they may not be getting *all* the info about his PCL injury. We occasionally do PCL reconstructions here - not uncommon at all.
I'd be happy to chat and explain things and could even look into different/more experienced orthopaedic surgeons in their area.

I've had two hockey players of mine with ACL, MCL and PCL damage. All repaired.
Both are back playing the game. |
