I am looking to buy my first Buell. I found a 2000 black Buell M2 Cyclone. It has the supertrapp exhaust and is in nice shape with 5700 miles and newer tires. The guy wants $4000. I am just wondering if this a good deal and what types of problems these bikes are likely to suffer from. I did a fair amount of searching already(I see that the rocker box usually leaks and the speedos go out) Here is a pic

I paid 3800 for a stock 02 M2 w/ 5000 miles in 2004. I still regret selling her. Nothing like a loud, black tuber! Nice ride. From only looking @ pic, that bike looks taken care of. You might spend a little time/$ chasing oil weeps. Because its a carbed buell, Its getting harder and harder to find M2's. They are the favorite prey of "chopper" builders. |

It also has the shock recall done, which you can't get done for free anymore if you needed it. That is one less hassle you would have to deal with. Go for it - you won't regret it |

although if you really wanted to haggle with the guy, you probably could get it down some being an 00. my buddy bought his 02 with 2600 miles on it for 3500 and that was almost 2 years ago. depends how motivated the seller is. outside of the oil leaks, the supertrapp is the only thing you want to look at and make sure it isn't the older model. the newer one is one piece and has a cone shaped piece of metal on the intake side of the muffler. the old one will come apart on you. already had it happen and wouldn't want to see it happen to anyone else. other than that, talk is cheap, see where he stands. if you don't ask about a lower price, you won't know. you will enjoy the bike. good luck. |

That's kinda high for an '02 tuber. Check your local craig's, etc. They often go for far less |

I have a 2000 M2 that makes over 100 hp I would be wiling to part with for $4200. Many MANY high performance parts to include an NRHS 1250 kit, Stage 2 heads, Mikuni 42 carb, SE 536 cams. race air cleaner and exhaust, aluminum oil tank, etc. I will have it at Homecoming if anybody is interested. |

I loved my M2 (when it ran). But it spent too damned much time in the shop and not enough time on the road. I traded it for my XB12Ss in the summer of 2005. They gave me $3,000 in trade which I thought was DAMNED generous considering it had 36,000 miles on the odometer at the time. I was recently spotted at a local biker event with a 12:00 bar installed... |

I'd avoid a tuber with 5700 miles. They don't really get broken in until at least 10k. There are probably still a bunch of gaskets on that bike that haven't failed yet but probably will within the next 5k miles. Ask the seller which (if any) of these have been replaced: Shifter detent plate retaining clip Cam cover gasket Starter gasket Oil pump drive gear The starter gasket is pretty easy. The detent plate retaining clip is more difficult, but not insurmountable. The cam cover gasket is a gnarly job. |

Sanchez- i'm at over 220,000 miles and have my original oil pump drive gear, shifter detent plate r-clip, starter gasket, etc. What's the cam cover gasket? This is a new one on me.... Don't generalize with these machines, some engines are rock-solid for hundreds of thousands of miles. Just pulled in 5 minutes ago from a nice ride. |

I think you're the exception rather than the rule, Tramp. The cam cover is the cover on the right side of the motor that goes over the cams. It's also referred to as the gearcase cover. To get it off, you have to take the rocker boxes off and yank the pushrods. When the gasket lets go, it flings oil all over your back tire. My 2002 Cyclone melted down at about 8k miles. Within one month, I had a primary gasket leak, broken detent plate retainer, and a gearcase cover gasket failure. Shortly after I got it back on the road from the gearcase gasket replacement, the starter gasket failed. It's a strange disease, though, because I still have my eye out for an S1 even though I know it'll strand me somewhere. |

Don't be so sure an S1 is gonna let you down- these earlier sporty mills (1995-96) are a different animal than the 21st century lumps. Keep your eye out, grab one, you may be pleasantly surprised. I beat on this '96 mill, regularly, and have done so since '97. ...Looks like you're referring to the Right Case Cover, to me..... |
