I noticed an oil leak out of my rear rocker box so I started to pull the covers for new metal gaskets. Pulled the sparkplugs so I can rotate the engine and look what I found!sparkplugs The plug on the right is out of the rear cylinder. Looks like I need to drop the engine and do a top end on at least the rear cylinder, probably should do the front at the same time. Any and all advice is welcome and I will be cruising the archives, but right now I need to get on the dissasembly.

Further along now and I figured out that I can r&r the cylinder without dropping the engine. Looks to me like I have a bad intake valve stem seal or guide.intake valve stem
The head looks pretty groddy.head
I was going to do the front cylinder just because I was in here work zonebut I think I will leave it alone for now. Piston and rings look good, even the top of the piston is not too bad.piston top
I need to get this done quickly so I can ride to Wendover next week.

Essjay.... when I was prepared for a head problem (that I turned out not to have fortunately) I did a little checking. It was my understanding that your could order a completely new head assembly direct from Buell for like $350. It included valves and everything, fully assembled, ready to bolt on.

I could be wrong, but that was my understanding. For that kinda money, I would just oder a new one and slap it in and be done with it, especially if I was in a hurry.

Otherwise, I would take the advice Blake gave me once. Remove both heads, pack in bubble wrap, send to Nallin Racing or Cycle-Rama, and wait anxiously for them to come back.

With all that oil residue, I would assume it must have been smoking like a PortaPit BBQ trailer. How many miles are on the engine?

Actually it wasn't smoking at all that I had noticed, but on my last ride I missed a shift and my son who was following said I let out some smoke. The bike had 18000 on it when I bought it last spring and now it is up to 23 something. I have noticed an increase in oil consumption from a quart every thousand to now a quart in 500. It ran fine once the engine was hot but stumbled a little while warming up. Knew I had a problem and was hoping to wait until winter to work on it but the rocker box leak was getting to strong to ignore. I am going ahead and replacing the rings while I have it apart and doing the front cylinder and head as well. Going to be some busy nights this week.

New heads just to fix a bad valve stem seal or guide is a little extreme for my budget. I went ahead and pulled the front cylinder off too and I am having the valves dressed and new seals installed. Also doing a ball hone on the cylinders with new rings on the pistons. I should have around $100 into the whole job when I am done.

Blake- if you read this, could you move this to the appropriate knowlege vault section? I assume that would be engines:the big stuff?
