http://www.arabnews.com/?page=6§ion=0&article= 108556&d=4&m=4&y=2008 Proof positive that we should burn legislators for fuel! "...In an interesting tussle, a virtually unnoticed clause was added almost at the least moment to a US energy bill that bars the government, in particular the Department of Defense, from using Alberta crude because it is deemed unconventional and too dirty. A provision in the US Carbon Neutral Government Act incorporated into the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 act effectively bars the US government from buying fuels that have greater life-cycle emissions than fuels produced from conventional petroleum sources. The United States has defined Alberta oilsands as unconventional because the bitumen mined from the ground requires upgrading and refining as opposed to the traditional crude pumped from oil wells. California Democrat Representative Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and Republican Tom Davis added the clause. In a letter dated March 17 to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Waxman wrote the clause was in response to proposals by the Air Force to develop coal-to-liquid fuels which produce almost double the greenhouse gas emissions of comparable conventional fuel. ..." |

Just some FYI, talking with some our project engineers yesterday about two new units that are being built at the oil refinery I work at, the design/engineering phase has been ongoing for two years now with ground work about to start. The initial cost estimate was 800 million, last week they got the updated cost estimate of 1.6 billion dollars. Just wanted to let people know that alot of the profits are being pumped back into the economy, I wish Yall could see the amount of people (good paying jobs) that it takes to design/engineer/build just one medium sized oil processing unit. In a basic oil refinery there are typically 8-10 processing units, feed tanks, product tanks, loading facilitis (docks, trucks, rail) fire protection and the list goes on. Alot more overhead than say an Walmart or a insurance company which makes a great profit!!! |

Honu, no offense, but every company has to reinvest in itself to advance. How are their profits being pumped back into the economy? By your post, I got the impression that refinery people are taking their profits and updating their facilities. If by doing that, the price of gas drops, then I'd say that's bolstering the economy. |

I agree, that is why I was pointing out from personel experience that alot of the huge profits are putting people to work, and more processing units means more product (supply) which according to economics 101 should stablize or reduce prices. Hopefully |

more processing units means more product (supply) which according to economics 101 should stablize or reduce prices. ...except they're hiding behind the "a weak dollar is making our prices go up" line. They won't reduce prices until they realize they aren't selling their product anymore. Supply and demand - as long as people demand, they will continue to supply...at prices *they* deem appropriate. Until we get some decent legislation to keep it in check, anyway.... |

Too funny . .. the feds talk about slapping a big "excess profits tax" . . .which prompts the oil companies to curtail production. . . anyone want to take a crack at what reduced supply does to price? This is as smart as the "gas tax holiday". It's an entitlement kind of a world. |

And does anyone have a clue where the money to pay that excess profit tax comes from? Yes, you in the front... Yes, that's right, the oil companies pass it along to you and me. I keep getting this mental image. As a congressman or senator enters the capital building they have to pass through the brain detector. If the bell goes off, the security guards all rush in, remove the subject's brain and only then allows them to continue into building where they then vote on all manor or things that effect our lives. Morons! (Message edited by zane on May 02, 2008) |

Don't need to pull their brains. Pull their wallet instead. |
