Once a few years ago, I ended up behind a guy in the mountains. This guy was obviously a novice to the hills, and his "gear" was t-shirt, khakis, and deck shoes, his bike was a new 916. Once I saw him, I got a chill up my spine, and went a different direction as soon as I was able. Later that day I saw his bike all busted up on the side of the road going up Blood Mountain. Once we got to Turners Corner, I stopped off for a drink, and heard some other riders talking about him, and his accident. He low-sided and came off the bike, the bike went down the hill, and he slid off the road onto the shoulder. He ended up in the hospital. One of the guys that saw it said he would have been fine if he had some gear on, because he didn't "wreck that hard" but he was a bloody mess. Pavement has no mercy with regards to skin... | ||

Yep, sliding skin to asphalt is the same as as sand paper. Knew a guy (a customer actually) that ground off 6 toes and both kneecaps, in a drunken motorcycle crash. That was the result of wearing Japanese riding boots (thongs,flaps,go-a-heads) and shorts. He was wearing a helmet... | ||

Who here has never ever ridden in shorts and t-shirt? The best wheelie I ever got on my 1976 RM125 (I was 14) was in shorts, tennis shoes, no shirt and no helmet... on the asphalt. If I saw a kid doing that today, I'd freak out... for a while at least. If it was my kid, I'd kick his ass. | ||

I've never ridden in shorts/t-shirt (unless you're talking about when I was a kid riding in the dirt on my CR80 and didn't know any better). Looking back, I've often wondered why my dad thought it was ok to buy me that bike and let me ride it my entire childhood with ZERO safety gear. I sure was lucky, and shame on him. I have ridden the couple of blocks from my house to my office in a t-shirt a few times, but under 30mph. | ||

Thats true. As a kid on my dirt bike I rode in tshirt and shorts and occasionally in flip flops. I healed faster then too. | ||

I wear a helmet and jeans when I ride but I never wear armour and wont. If I cant be comfortable on my ride I may as well be in my car. I dress for the ride, not for the crash. | ||

never ever once being in shorts, even as a kid on the mini bike or the dirt bike. the older i get the more i put on. the more i have on, the more i hope it won't hurt if i go down again. | ||

NEVER in shorts... But I digress... I do ride my Harley with boots, jeans, a t-shirt and a beanie helmet most of the time. On the Buells, MINIMUM of boots, jeans, jacket and full face helmet!!! I assume FULL responsibilty for my choices!! | ||

explain this to me. Harley cruisers will have multiple cow hides from neck down, a the smallest piece of plastic available for a helmet. sport riders, on the other hand, full face $400.00 helmet, tank top, cut-offs, and flip flops!  | ||

I dress for the ride, not for the crash. I would post the ride2die.com website again, but they are out of funds and have temporarily taken the site down. I dress expecting the most horrendous crash imaginable every time I get on. There is peace of mind knowing I have done all that I can to protect myself. I still might die or become injured, but it won't be because I left part of my gear at home. | ||

I'm forced to plagiarize Court, but only because I can't think of anything as good  "I always dress for the fall." Strangely enough I've not wadded one up since I started doing that either. Before I had the gear epiphany I was known to to wad them up quite regularly --weird now that I think of it. G2 | ||

Socoken, You are looking at this wrong. I don't think anyone here gives a rats ass about your hide. Most of us just would like to be able to continue to ride. With the increase of irresponsible riders, governments and insurance companies are legislating and pricing people out of the sport. This is no different then the NRA and their stance on responsible gun owner ship. All it takes is a few bad apples to ruin it for the rest of us. | ||

staying home doesn't sound so bad when you work for a company that everything they do they do around safety which is fine but when you get told about water flashing from nuking it in a microwave and i need to know how to nuke water, then i just give up. i even got sent an article on it as to what had happened. | ||

Well here's to hoping that works out for ya. I dress for the ride as well, and I'm more comfortable being protected. To each their own Im not exactly the guy in shorts and flip flops but Im not gonna be the guy in the space suit either. It has worked out pretty well for me thanks. In my 22 years of riding Ive been down twice so I know what road rash feels like. That why I ride defensively and try to avoid going down in the first place. |
