I know I'read about this on BBS before but I can't find it now that I need it. The service manual is unclear to me. Does suspension fully unloaded mean that the shock is fully retracted or that bike is standing upright with no weight on it. I did it with the shock fully retracted with about 1.75 inches of freeplay. The amount of freeplay seems way to loose, the belt just about makes contact with the bottom of the swingarm. Should I do it with the bike upright alowing the shock to compress slightly?

Wman. In my humble opinion, the only way to do it right is to support the entire weight of the bike from above, disconnect the shock, and move the swing arm through the entire range of motion to make sure the belt never binds.

Yeah. I don't do that either.

The second best way (IMHO) is "scary loose". You are not quite there yet... loosen it a little more so it will touch the swingarm. My quick check is to sit on the bike, reach down and and make sure it can move belt so that it can touch the swingarm on both top and bottom.

I have never heard of a problem from a belt too loose. I have personally spent $450 on parts and about 30 hours on labor for what was likely a belt too tight.

A XB would be great, too bad I'm 6-2 and feel like I'm on a big wheel when I sit on one.

THe fix for this one is really, really simple.








Change it to a Chain


So far 4700km and I am not home yet.

I had the splines wear off of the inside of my front drive pully, had to be the belt or the nut that holds it on being too loose. The belt was pretty loose and I pop weelies a lot. I keep the belt pretty tight now, so I can move it 1/8 to 1/4 inch.

I dunno, but me belt comes within 1/4" of the swingarm on the lower run. I can "almost" turn it 90 degrees by twisting. Seems to work pretty well, but driveline slop is noticeable. I do love this bike, despite the difficulties I have had with it leaking oil.

I replaced my belt a month ago. My understanding is it should have about 1.75" movement when rear tire suspened. I have been told lose isn't loose enough. It seemed to lose to be, but I have been riding hard since and everything has been fine.

I went with the scary loose set up. I can't figure out why the belt doesn't skip on the counter shaft sprocket under a load but it doesn't.
