I'm building a track bike and need a lil advice. It's a 2001 X1 frame, and a 99 sporty (883 soon to be 1200) motor w/ thunderstorm heads. Any help will be appreciated....

1) Is there any way to make an S1 tank fit?

2) Does anyone have some flavor of CDI system out there that lets me get rid of the charging system (stator, rotor, battery)?

3) Any secrets or tips on welding some frame slider bases onto the frame?

4) Do you guys see any common problems out there with..lets say trap doors, bearings, etc.?

Thanks for your help...

Frank

My first question is why? You're going to spend more $ that way than buying a race ready tuber that's all set to go. All the real fast guys need XB's to stay in the hunt at the pro level and are selling off some excellent fast quality built tubers.
Hal's had Dan Belanski's for sale and I think it was Steve Luxem's on Ebay not long ago.
Half the fun is doing it yourself, but it ain't cheap.
1 I don't think a S1 tank will fit without alot of modification. Not sure though.
2 Everybody I've seen just run a total loss ignition.
3 Never seen frame sliders on a tuber.
4 Biggest problem is overheating. Oil cooler is a must but the heads still get hot and die. I'm going to work on a scoop like X1's have to try to make it last. It's kind of like throwing airodynamics out the window, but for me, I'll go broke before I win anyway so I'm trying to postpone broke as long as possible. Best of luck, you'll have a blast.

Well, the reason I'm doing it is cause I'm only gonna have a lil less than 2,000 bucks in it. You havent seen any race ready tubers that cheap have ya?
Second, I'm not really trying to be fast. My goal is to have a shitload of fun, and improve my riding skills while I'm at it. I fully understand what XB's are capable of. I've been in them, around them, and kept a close eye on everything XB. I'd love to use one for a track day, but unless one falls in my lap, or the shop will let me demo-track one, that ain't gonna happen.
I've seen frame sliders on a tuber at mid america motorplex the last time they had the thunderbike series there ;)

(I've got an oil cooler w/ adapter waiting on my work bench atm ;))

Just a quick reply to help out, I do not have allot of time to devote as we have a race this weekend in Kansas.

Rich Conrath from Innovative makes a beautiful S1 style tank for X1 handcrafted and smaller to allow plenty of handlebar room with clip-ons.

Depending on your plans, you can run a total loss system as long as you plan on doing sprint races, 10 laps or less depending on track, but if you plan on endurance-you better have a charging system!

You could stud out the frame to accept frame sliders, but if your out for fun-just do not crash and you wont need them!

I do not have time at the present for common problems, but there are enough-most are goofy things like exhaust breaking, shift linkages & such. Your breathing system may cause problems, but there are fool proof cures, can not go into now, but that is one area you will NEED to address if you are going to race at high RPMs.

Trans are pretty tough IMHO, top ends need attention every so often. We have found a very good package in the XB9 heads with the 7mm valves, some cams and Millenium cylinders and I think it is really the package to beat.

Anyways, get it together and get out there, you will have fun and find out what needs attention as you go. I think that is part of the fun of racing, everything will break at one point or another, if you stay on top of it and have a little good luck, everything will break at the right time. Take care and buy the best in safety equipment!
