I stand about 6'7" in those Johnny rebs.

I figure I give them this look and say - 'so you're the ones that put sh*t on on my bike?'

Them magazine boys are entitled to their opinion, but I've never held the opinions of professional reviewers in high regard. Their job is to find fault.

I do not let the opinions of others dictate to me what movies I see, what music I listen to, or what bikes I like.

"my favorite part was the firebolt had 159bhp and could run 181mph"

I would guess English power measurements are different and the 181 is actually kmph with would be roughly equivelent to the top end in American mph.
Any "blokes" with a metric instrument cluster
care to confirm this?

Do think the I4 spec is just a rounding error?

181 kph is about 112 mph.

I think the Brits round to the nearest multiple of 4, and being the firebolt has only 2 cylinders, they round up since it's at the half-way point.

i think horsepower is horsepower wherever it is. the person responsible for the specs, probably thought it was a jap bike cos of the 'R' so found some stuff that seemed right at the time

superbike mag sucks anyway, i cant recall buying a copy for a long time. the only good bit is the centrefold photos.

They don't like the Ulysses, 'cause it's only what...60 miles from coast to coast in the UK?

Most of you don't realize that European metric horses are much smaller than American horses. Since they only produce about 65% of the power an American horse produces, the numbers come out perfectly.

I see Danger Dave posted more sexy pictures of himself too!

Alot of very entertaining comments.

When it comes to critiques, IMHO, there is no better test than riding one for yourself. Next best scenario would be the advice of some one you know very well. In 1974, I bought a brand new Kawasaki Z1 900. I got alot of input from a riding buddie who had purchased one earlier and it was a wonderful bike..for me. Some magazine reviews wernt so nice. It pissed me off too.

Point is, this particular rag isnt necessarily the BIBLE of road testing bikes. If ALL the magazines said that the Uly was the worst, well, there might be somthing to it. If its anything like my M2, Id say the Uly was a damn fine bike and Id simply ignore the artice.

Some of the problems the article pointed out should be fixed. I don't see any excuse for a rusting muffler, considering this has been an issue with the previous XB models. Things like the headlights and brakes are subjective, however; why not placate the critics and go ahead and improve these items. I bet the cost would be minimal.

The intentionally inflammatory header "IS the Ulysses the worst bike you can buy?" really caught my attention, as it was intended to do. It will also sell a lot of magazines. Overall, I enjoyed the writers experience as an outsider (non-Bueller). He made some good points in a humorous style. I have to admit that the bike is not perfect and has it's share of major quirks. I hope Erik reads the article several times.

I love my Ulysses,

If you want a sportbike, I would say that the uly is only a moderate choice, I mean really, it carries a passenger well, holds a tone of luggage, has great cornering and will do well off road. nope. I dont want any squidleys sharing the off road back woods routes I enjoy. they can keep their crotch rockets. As a jack of all trades, a bike that takes everything in stride +1 the gang that get it, get it. to hell with the motorcycle self grandizing press. I pay as much attention to them when buying a bike as I do to the oscars about what movie to see.

Those guys just ride super-sports bikes. I know some of them. They have absolutely no comprehension about anything other than track days (or nutter-touring). Does not help they put a 5’6” wee-bee on it.

Grabby headline, that's all there is to see here.

Danger-Dave is right - his magazine is truly different in its spread. I remember the very first issue, which had a Husqvarna 490 which I absolutely drooled over for years. They do 4-wheelers, super-sports, touring, dirt; you name it. Never seen another magazine have anything like the coverage.

If there is anyone who has the general bike (whatever shape or form/class) skills to comment on a Uly, it is Dave.

Besides that, he looks like a huge fella, so not sure what else would fit! : )

Cheers!

we're just giving it another tart up with the issue that is going to bed now.

Cleaned the layout up a lot.

Always interesting. Perhaps this will join the famed yellow S3T test in Motorcyclist . . .

I suspect the text was more to stir sales and emotions than to report any objectivity . . lots of things there that go counter to what is becoming tribal knowledge re the Uly.
