I'm making some brackets for my race bike to hold my dual catch cans behind the front fairing and a bracket to hold my Ohlins shock reservoir and catch can for the tranny vent line. I want to use aluminum stock. Maybe 3/4 by 1/8. I have a mig welder set up for aluminum, with argon gas, etc, etc. Problem I have is where to get a good quality aluminum stock that can be welded, but doesn't cost a small fortune. The Home Center of the world are out ,I'm sure, because I believe the stuff they sell there is not exactly high quality and am sure it wouldn't stand up well to welding. any thoughts? Thanks. | ||

rocco, Try to find a fab shop in your area. Most times they will have anything you want. Otherwise let me know what you are looking for. I have a fab shop 6 blocks away that has a ton of aluminum. Paul | ||

McMaster Carr sells quite a large selection of materials. The home center aluminum is the same as anyone else's. those rounds, tubes, flats, and rods, and angles are all 6061. also it gets annealed by welding. so the parts that have been welded will be softer. if you need to weld it your pretty much stuck with 6000 series. T6 is a decent hard temper. after you weld it it will be almost fully annealed. or T1'ish 3000 might be more corrosion resistant for boats. but it's softer to begin with. your parts will get some of their original temper strength back in a couple weeks time lots of technical stuff. http://www.key-to-metals.com/Articles.htm (Message edited by dsergison on February 23, 2008) | ||

3/4" x 1/8", how long of a piece do you need? I also have some 1/2" x 1/8" and 3/8" x 1/8" if they would be more to your liking. | ||

Rocketsprink....Fastenal also sells small quantities of Alum. And as stated earlier 6061 is a good choice and has good weldability, I would use 4043 as filler. If you are concerned about appearance and want it TIG welded, I can do it, you pay shipping is all......ironken2001 at yahoo dot cam |
