So, how do you like your Blues? Speaker or sound hole? Been on a Junior Kimbrough kick for a while now, and think maybe the Black Keys do Junior better than he did. Lightnin' Hopkins also currently in rotation. Who do you like? Don't like? |

I Like S.R.V and Kenny Wayne Shepard and Tom Waits, along with most electric guitar based blues, guess Im of the "plugged" variety.... |

Whoa, I only have Tom Wait's Bone Machine album, and I wouldn't call it blues. He has blues albums? When it comes to blues, I like both. SRV, KWS, Robert Johnson, some of Led Zeppelin's stuff,... Jeff Beck "Brush With the Blues". |

I like Jimi Hendrix and I like Mississippi John Hurt. and I also like a lot of music between the two. It depends on my mood. This morning, I feel like, "Only my Mama loves me, and she could be jivin' me, too." |

I like my blues with a hubcap on the front: Actually, I like it all, but slide on a National Steel Standard is pretty much my favorite. I need to get myself one of the reasonably priced knock-offs one of these days... |

I am all over the map. I could never say I like electrified Blues exclusively over acoustic with little gems like "Life by the Drop" by SRV out there. There is so much left to be discovered and found, new and old... don't cheat yourself by excluding any of it. |

Never quite heard it put that way before... it rings so true. I heard SRV got to a point where he was drinking a quart of Vodka before every concert before he cleaned up. |

Man I like it all. There's nothing more haunting than listenin' to "Come on in my Kitchen" by Robert Johnson followed by SRV's "Tin Pan Alley". Then if you're really into some good acoustical blues try on some Mississippi John Hurt. And man do I ever dig Son House playing his National Steel but one of his best renditions is the a-cappella version of "Grinnin' in Your Face". |

Can't let a thread like this go without a mention of 'The Iceman' Albert Collins. When the power got turned on, this guy could cool the world, man. I regret never seeing him play live, but he has a body of recorded work that will sustain me. Props to the Iceman. |

Saw Buddy Guy at the Portland Blues Festival a few years ago. I never quite understood why he was so legendary when I saw him on TV because he was always mugging for the camera and being defferential to whom ever he was playing with (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, SRV, et al.). After sitting there stunned with my eyes welling up a little only a quarter of the way through his set, I finally understood. He really is all that and a bag of chips. The guy is smokin' hot and you can almost 'feel' the history in the air when he plays. He'll take you for ride you won't ever forget. |

Can't believe anyone has not mentioned Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company. Although IMHO she did much better when she went out on her own. I have her four disc box set and absolutely love A Woman Left Lonely. But too it depends on the mood but mostly I like the older electric stuff. |

I just picked up a Buddy Guy CD this week at the used bookstore. Might go back for another one they had there with him and someone else. Picked up a compiliation CD some time back with one or two Son House selections on it, and a bunch of other folks I hadn't heard much of before. My tastes are all over the board, but lately the Blues have been working well. Don't matter if it's plugged or unplugged or plugless, if it works then it works. Sit back and enjoy the ride. |

Saw Buddy Guy many times at a small bar in Piermont, N.J. when he played small venues. No more. Saw Albert Collins play in Poughkeepsie. Had the whole theater dancing with him in the aisles. Never forget it. (Message edited by frankfast on February 20, 2008) |

I'm ashamed I've not yet mentioned my favorite live show of last year: Ray Wylie Hubbard. With Gurf Morlix backing him on guitar and vocals. This is a man who ranks among the immortals of Texas blues/rock. This was one of my favorite live shows OF ALL TIME. With Bonepony from Nashville opening. This is a guy who could tell you about the contents of your breakfast cereal box and it would be the most interesting thing you'd heard all day. GREAT songwriter and storyteller. His latest album is called "Snake Farm". Go buy it!! Lucinda Williams Mary Gauthier Danny Barnes and Thee Old Codgers- "Things I Done Wrong" is a great album. (He also fronts The Bad Livers.) Speaking of plugs- the shop where I work has a music/entertainment facility that has grown into an entity of note on its own merits. Lucky for me that my boss is a huge music nut. Y'all stop by the website and check it out if you're passing thru. I just plugged my tire, planning on riding it to MBV... (Message edited by 86129squids on February 20, 2008) |

Lots of good stuff on this thread. I usually like mine plugged.......except when I'm in the mood for unplugged. Son House doing anything a-cappella is great. Has anyone listened to the sound track for "Black Snake Moan"? I forget who the guitarist is, but he is great and Sam Jackson does a good job on vocals. And before I figured out blues even existed I fell in love with ZZ Top's "Blue Jean Blues". Fantastic. |

+1 Lucinda Williams - dig this girl, "Wrap My Head Around That" +100 Ray Wylie Hubbard Tab Benoit for some really clean guitar licks, Johnny Lang too. And for something real gravely and righteous try John Mooney, the white man's reincarnation of Son House. |

Man, I wouldn't even know where to start.. Keb Mo plays a very tastey style of acoustic blues. So does Joe Bonamasa. I've heard Joe play live durng a thunderstorm. He blew everyone away. Over the past 30 years I've had the pleasure of hearing many of the greats live. Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamasa, Robert Cray, Tommy Castro (puts on a KILLER show), Luther Allison, Walter Trout and way too many more to mention. I've heard them in big and small venues and to be honest they were all great. Electrons or a sound board. Man that's a tough one. I've got a 200G drive full of Blues tunes of every kind. I love them all! (That reminds me, I need to get another drive, I have a ton of CD's I've not loaded yet...) An old friend once told me there was no such thing as a bad pizza, just some better than others. I think blues is kind of like that.....all of it stirs you soul. Brad Hughlysses, I'm another big fan of the "hubcap" version! |
