Check out Blackhawk's 3-day Assault packs. They're expensive but very tough and incredibly comfortable even on long trips. http://www.blackhawk.com/product1.asp?P=603D00&C=C 1008 Look for pack with a wide belt strap. It distributes the load better and takes some of the stress off your shoulders; a must for long trips. Check out Army Surplus/Supply stores for good deals on backpacks. | ||

Just a warning. When you hang your nylon backpack on your handle bars and walk away for a few minutes you will return to find a hole in your backpack and an ugly mess of melted plastic on your headers.....or at least I did. | ||

I've melted mine too. Hang it on the right side and don't even think about it.  I make sure it only goes on the left side of the bike now. | ||

Verdict is still out on the back pack theory. Every time I wear one I feel like the wind is trying to pull me off the back of the bike. Makes my damn arms tired! | ||

I picked up a joe rocket blaster backpack. its HUGE and has a separate compartment that i can stuff my helmet in and keep it safe. | ||

I try to only use packs with a single cross-chest strap, and a waist belt to prevent flapping. The centerstrap design cuts way down on the "it's trying to pull me off the back of the bike" feeling because your body is holding it, not your shoulders. It also doesn't restrict your arm movement/reach. The waist belt helps keep it centered on your back, and not rolling down onto your thigh, when you tuck in for the jump to warp. Gotta get that 12pack home before it gets warm, right? ;) Oh, and I always "park-hang" my stuff on the passenger pegs. No exhaust back there to cook stuff. Just remember to pull the helmet off before starting the bike. Even a split second will fill the liner with coldstart exhaust. Not that I forget to do that...much. Must be the fumes. | ||

Instead of a backpack, check out the Ventura packs- they have a mounting system that interchanges with a small rack, they come in 30L or 45L capacities. I just don't like the added weight on my shoulders whilst riding. If you're on an SS, somewhere on the Badweb I've seen the Ulysses Hepco-becker bags mounted. That's the slickest setup I've seen. My favorite backpack of all time was the one I used for school- a Jandd pack. Now I've got a Swiss Army one that's pretty nice. | ||

I got a Jansport Equinox 33. 40 bucks, chest strap, belt strap, stays put, and fits a ton of stuff in it. 100 mph and I hardly notice it. In fact, I dont notice it if I dont think about it.  | ||

Jose had a good tip that I used... use a tail bag, and get a pack that you can make loose enough so the weight sits on the tail bag. You will want a sternum strap to keep it from feeling like it is wandering. When you set it up right, you can't even feel it back there. Careful whats in the tail bag though. You don't want to punch a hole in your JBWeld tubes (DAMHIK). | ||

It is very stable to wear, even at extreme speed. The only thing I have done to it is give it a good coating of weather proofing. | ||

Timbuktu messenger-pick your size. I've had an intermediate size for 8 yrs now. Use it everyday. Hold everything, waterproof. fits well on your back. Backpacks are better for long trips, but a PITA for short ones as it's really hard to get a backpack on and off when wearing a good jacket. messenger bags to me are much easier plus you can get stuff out-soda, cigs, blackjack, without taking it off... | ||

I've got a Northface bag meant for snow boarders. It's got a ton of little pockets so I don't have to dig through the large compartment for keys, etc.... It also has a belt strap and chest strap to cut down on the "pull me off the back" feeling. | ||

+1 on the Oakley, though mine is all black. Its an amazing pack with enough straps and pockets to hold pretty much anything. | ||
