The movie satisfied my monster movie craving- gets a bit too twitchy at times since the footage is s'posed to be taken through a handheld camcorder- but overall, I'd give it "I plan on buying it" rating.
I just wish that the darn thing wasn't supposed to be the ocean...makes it a little harder to believe that carpet bombs wouldn't affect it...
Reviews have been good and there has been much raving - usually a sign of hype and a movie that sucks, but took the boys out to see it anyway. (and truth be known, we actually seek out sucky movies now & then).
It did not suck. It was excellent. Blair Witch meets Godzilla. It touched on many classic monster movie themes but kept moving on without the cliche's.
The ending, while open (which I usually hate), was very good.
If you have any intention of ever seeing it - go see it on the big screen. The camera shake combined with the heavy pace of the movie will make you vertigo sick, but is an integral part of the movie that will be lost on a tv screen. Do be prepared to get up and move a few rows back from your initial choice.
I saw it last night....very very good. I highly doubt you'll be able to pick out detail and have the same viewing experience by watching the DVD. You should see it on the big screen.
The monster, and its spawn, were cool as hell.
Believe it or not, Hud, the guy video taping the movie, was the highlight of the whole thing.
I left the theater wondering how to feel about the movie, but as I think back on it, I really liked it. There are some things I think they should have done differently, but I liked it overall. The monster is crazy, and there is a part at the end that is insane.
I would have liked it, if I'd managed to see more than 20 minutes. Unfortunately I was too busy making my way to the restroom to toss my cookies. Once that shaky camera thing started, it was all over. Should have brought some Dramamine....
Man, that sucks. I was feeling a little uncomfortable in the first 15 minutes, but once the action kicked in I got over it.
My only problem is I should have KNOWN J. J. Abrams was going to leave a BUNCH of questions unanswered. I'm still waiting on him to answer about 50 questions from the first season of "Lost"!!
I rather like that there was a lot left unanswered in this particular movie. Movies that attempt to explain too much often become hokey. This movie totally avoided that. It works to its' credit.
Indeed. This movie was meant to be shot in "real time." This is all happening "now." In real life, explanations don't come when things are happening... they come later, after everything has settled down.
Those four people didn't CARE why that thing was ripping the city apart, they just wanted to get the **** outta there! This movie was THEIR viewpoint.
Maybe the sequel will go into the "Whys" and the "Where fors" but this was just fine as it was.
I saw an interview with J.J. Abrams that implied if a sequel is ever filmed, it would NOT be a second appearance of the creature, but this SAME instance, but from a different vantage point. THAT might fill in some holes...
By the way, Mattel is taking pre-orders on action figures of the creature, but won't be shipping till October, AND at $99.99 a pop! And you thought your wait for an 1125R was bad?
My girlfriend is big time into all the web pages, my space pages and message board crap on IMDB. There's sooo many armchair qb's giving their 2 cents on how, why and if.
1) the Gov made the monster, thus the quick response time
2) The splash was made by the monster falling into the ocean
3) There was 2 monsters
4) JJ Ambrams logo is visible on the monster from time to time
No no no. The Government created Gyaos, the Shadow of Evil. When they finally realized what they'd done, they created Gamera to destroy Gyaos. But they were too late, by the time Gamera was complete, Gyaos had already destroyed what was left of civilization...
I'm not sure... but I think that the monster in Central Park was NOT the big monster that was the size of a building. He wasn't all that big. Remember when the big on stepped on the tank? The one in Central Park was about the size of a T-rex.
I waited around until the studio's logo showed up AFTER the credits and don't remember that... My date left when she got motion sick. I'm glad we drove separately...
