I've just returned home from a friend's house that has been declared a total loss due to a house fire. Thankfully no one was at home and their dog was outside at the time. Here we are three days before Christmas and they've lost everything. Even though they were very lucky that no one was home, it's still very devastating to them as a family. Please say a prayer for Vanessa, Chad and their three children during this time of need. | ||

Your friends are lucky--we had a triple fatality fire just a couple days ago. Not fun. Check your smoke detectors! Yes, everyone, please check your smoke detectors. We lost one of our young soccer players, along with her little brother and Papa three years ago in a house fire. So, so sad. Is there something this community can do to make it a better Christmas for that family Thanks for asking. Right now they seem to be in pretty good shape, all things considered. Chad's brother had a vacant house on the market in a neighboring town, so they will be staying there until they can relocate back to Grifton. Family members have brought over spare beds, a couch, TV and kitchen table. A firefighter took down the children's names and ages and contacted Operation Santa Claus. He's promised that these children will have Santa under the tree Tuesday AM. Our community is small, but pretty tight knit. Clothes and money have been brought in all day and left at my friend's hair salon in town. My Mom and I went to Target and got some daily essentials...socks, undies, toiletries, diapers, paper products and coffee. All in all, they are doing well. Their 6 year old daughter's philosophy on the whole ordeal was "well, we needed a new house anyway, so it's OK". If life was truly that easy. Thanks again for the prayers. | ||

i was trying to think of the easiest way to lend support if they needed it kristi and i guess if they are doing alright at this time then that is great. it's good to know that communities like that are alive and well out there in the world. if there is anything else that they do need help with don't hesitate to email me. and as far as your words of comfort for last week, it is truly appreciated. as well as the others who had offered a kind word. anyhow don't hesitate if you do need help with something. | ||

Kristi: Your friends are in my thoughts and prayers. I had a friend, the bass player in Erik's band, recently go through the same thing . . total loss. It's not so much the psychical loss as it is the emotional trauma. We are a people attached and beholden to our "stuff". Loosing ALL your "stuff" in one event is traumatic. Thank goodness they have their health and th e love of friends and each other. Therein lies the strength to carry on. We'll be thinking of them in the holiday season and beyond. Court | ||

Been there, done that, but it was in February, and I was still in grade school. All the Christmas toys... POOF! Clothes and everything else, for that mater. 100 year-old pine goes up like a match. We held a local record for number of tankers needed to subdue a fire for quite some time. And my parents only had a $10k insurance policy (repeat after me: "STOOPID"). They've never fully recovered from it. BUT lots of people helped out and donated stuff, and it got us through. Best of luck to your friend.
