Yeah, he would have made it..........cept the G force of the rocket pulled the chute release lever while the rocket cycle was still on the launch ramp. His goal wasn't to crash miserably on the launch side......the goal was to crash on the other side. Distance and trajectory was well planned out...........to "make it". No, he wasn't going to daintily land, wheels down on the other side and jump out, unhurt. He was going to crash, straight in, nose first.......and hope to walk away.
