It looks suspiciously like the CVS disposable cam corders that were so successfully hacked for so long. I may even have one on a shelf in the garage  They look like they have marginal better specs (more memory) but are otherwise very similar. Not that this is a bad thing, its a fun little semi disposable camera. That being said, I saw Fuji F10's for something like $99. That will shoot a few minutes of video, but also shoots killer still photos. Not apples to apples by any means, but it makes me wonder if $120 can't buy a LOT more hardware these days if you spent some time looking around... But maybe not. | ||

I've got an Olympus 7mp camera that takes videos w/ sound for about the same price as the Flip w/ a 2mb xD card. With an empty 2mb xD card it will record about 40-45 minutes of video. Shoots the same 640 x 480/30fps. But my Olympus takes a nice high res picture for a point and shoot (read as I know nothing about, nor pretend to be a professional photographer) a nice picture. Note, the FE 230 is last years model, replaced by an FE 280, which is an 8mp camera. Quick price check showed the FE 230 around $130 plus xD card. | ||

I have the Canon SD400 that takes 43min of 640/480/30fps video on a 2G card with sound. You can get them on Ebay for less than $150. I would like the Flip, but I would like expandable memory. You can get a 4G chip for $60 or less. That's over 80 minutes of video that I can add to my current 43 minute chip. I have another 2G in my phone and another 1G in my GPS. All that to say that the camera is important. Storage may be even more important particularly if you don't plan to drag your laptop along with you. Don't bother with anything Fuji. The XD cards are dead in the water, nothing outside of Fuji uses them. That makes them harder to find, more expencive, and good luck finding a memory card reader for it, as most don't. 4GB SD card is about $25, while a 4GB XD dosen't exist | ||

Ft_B - Thanx for the advice. I really like Canon, in the past they have always made a good product. If/when I do get a camera I would like it to have an aux input to use a bullet cam. Do you know if it has one off the top of your head? | ||

I'm happy with my XD camera for stills... the lowly 1 gig card will store 600 some photos. The overriding pro of the fuji F10 / F30 / F31d (IMHO) is that it is the only point and shoot that accommodates low light photography. Usable 1600 ASA, even 3200 ASA. Short of a very bulky $800 digital rebel setup, I have not seen any other digital camera setups that can work in that range. I'd rather compact flash, but I can live with XD. $25 or so for a 1 gig card, and I just got a nice memory reader for it for $19 off the shelf at my local Micro Center. Thats a fair point for video though, where you chew through memory a lot faster. (Message edited by reepicheep on November 26, 2007) |
