This is turning into an exotica thread. Most of these bikes displayed here are just astronomically priced way out of my range.Except for this one engine wise(if i had way too much money) i'd never consider an air cooled Ducati. They have no advantage over a good air cooled Buell.

Except for the sleek lines it'd be also tough to choose a 1098 over an 1125r.Ooh but,it hurt to say that.

Seriously . . . and this has been an on-going discussion with a couple pals lately. . . if you had $65K to spend on a motorcycle would you but that one?

If I had 65k to blow on a motorcycle then chances are it would be akin to buying a Happy Meal at McDonalds. I'd need some serious disposable income to ever pay 65k for ANY motorcycle. Furthermore, the RR wouldnt be the only motorcycle in my stable. You can throw in the above examples, too

There remains one thing unclear to me since I read MCN's in depth test on the RR. The point was mentioned, yet not made clear as to whether or not you needed to prep the RR to ride every time you take it out, or if it was just the procedure first time from brand new. It did read to me like it meant every time I have to say. The RR requires, just like the real thing - a Moto GP bike, that you spend 3 hours prepping it. Warming up is a procedure in itself. Tyre pressures are a science lesson compared to just rolling up at the pump and putting in a coin whilst your riding partners wait. You get the picture. The RR from reading MCN does not strike me as the bike you decide to go for a quick blat on when you wake on Sunday morning to find the big orange orb shining.

I'd not spend £40k or whatever it is for an RR when you can have probably more fun on lots of rides for way less money. Of course any MV F4 1000 derivative is a stonking performer and I'd most likely buy one. I'd consider a really nice 998 like the Bostrom rep version. Such was an awesome Ducati and made about the pinnacle of the street 998 model. Having never ridden a 999, and are those looks growing on us all these days, I wouldn't rule out one pending a favourable road test.

I know I dismissed the 910 Brutale just recently after finally testing one and finding it blisteringly quick, but not very engaging, rather like going flat out in your favourite arm chair, but MV are in the process of bringing to market a 1078RR Brutale. It shares the same motor as the F4RR above, but with more mid range punch and slightly milder top end. Maybe this could be a more gutsy feeling Brutale. If not, MV are bringing a 989R Brutale to market too. The mind boggles.

But you know what, that kind of money and my late middle age years swing me towards something much more fun than all of the above. I'd like to make a Featherbed frame and shoehorn something like an early GSXR1100 motor into and make a nice sit-up and beg style bike in the sort of 70's Japanese muscle bike style, incorporating upside down forks with twin radial brakes etc. You get the picture. Such a project would leave me change out of RR money, and it would be uniquely mine.

Wow,i wasn't aware of that one

We're pretty far out there NOW!

An all CF version of the 1125r in racing trim would be stunning.Maybe a Ti exhaust..
...an 1125rr to lust after

i find Court's answer to the $65K question and mine very similar.

all these high dollar bikes are fine and dandy, but i've grown up in a ratrod/bobber/streetfighter kind of household.

it's not age, Court, because at 27 here's my $65K list:

(26K)--2 1125R's (one track, one street)
(4-7K)--used 2005 Kawa 636 (rip the fairings off if it has any, 530 chain, down at least 1/up at least 2etc.... stunt bike)
(5-7K)--a "fixer upper" late 60's Triumph Bonnie. one for resto-modding.

this still leaves me plenty for a nice engl-vincent black shadow or that cool cafed out velocette this fella down the road won't sell me. and i've got cash to burn fixin' up the triumph, and buying gold, so i can sell it later and buy more bikes.

pipe dreaming is fun. : )

"According to what I read its a streetable bike."

Yes the $40,000, 180hp, 99ft lbs, 363 pounder is a street ride.

For "track use only" put on the "race" pipe and ECM (included with bike) that gets you well over 200hp and 7 traction control presets. Traction issues with 200hp+ and 363 lbs, who woulda thunk it?

Sounds like more bike than the DesmoRR.

for $65k I'd buy myself an 1125R, an XBRR, a 1098, and all the bits and pieces I'd want to
make them as individually mine as I would want. Including translogic shifters etc.

maybe a little scooter to run errands on too if I had enough cash left over...

But that's just me.

Dana, I assume you were responding to my post?

To quote MCN.........

Just like a Moto GP bike you just don't jump on and ride the D16RR off down the pitlane, there are a number of pre-flight checks to go through, namely a three-hour-plus 'workshop' session split into four parts : engine, tyres, composites and cycle parts to explain the vast ins-and-outs of this spectacular machine.

Hope this explains my above comments.

I think you have that wrong, Barker. From the Ducati web site:

Ducati Corse engineers and riders worked in close contact with the R&D division during the development of this project to produce a true racing bike, a masterpiece of incredible performance and innovation.
The numbers speak for themselves. A total of 180hp is on tap for this new hypersport machine, together with an amazing torque value of 13.7 kgm.

Every 1098 R is equipped with a racing kit designed exclusively for use on the track that has a pair of carbon “102dB” silencers to increase power and a dedicated ECU. The ECU enables the activation of the DTC (Ducati Traction Control) system with eight available profiles able to be selected through the instrument panel’s digital display.

The key words being, " is equipped". Therefore, it tops out at 180 hp. The "R" is built, after all, for racing.

Rocket, It sounds like they just have a work shop for the new owner's getting you familiar with the bike. Like I said though they have 3 years of service free with the bike. None the less its very close to the original race bike but detuned. If it wasn't the bike just wouldn't last long.

UPDATE: From MotorcycleUSA.com

As you would expect from a bike built for competition on the world's highest stage, the 1098R produces ample power. Frightening power really, as Ducati claims the new mill delivers 180 ponies at 9750 rpm and 98.8 lb-ft of torque at 7750 rpm. In racing kit trim, Ducati ups the peak power claims to 186 horsepower.
