I know the retired sherrif who was riding his motorcycle with his son on the back(after a few beers) and wiping out on the horrible curve on I-94 in Ann Arbor at the Jackson road exit. While he was laying there with a broken leg he asked one of the responding officers to go look for the pistol he had tucked in his waist band. Remarkably they found it! The moral to the story is: Put a pistol in your pocket! To loose it, your pocket would have to be removed. |

Very interesting thread here!! Its very different up here in Canada regarding guns. You can't just pack a pistol unless you are a LEO. The only way a citizen can pack a pistol up here legally is to get a permit that allows you to drive to the range and home. If you stray too far from the beaten path, there's a good chance you'll be bunkin with Bubba. The regs are too numerous to get into but suffice to say, its a different world here. I like guns but no one packs them in Canada cept the criminals and LEO. |

Yay! gunthread!
The little .22 is often found in my suit if I am staying in MA. As a rule, I always have it when venturing into Boston. |

If you have ever seen someone shot with a .22 in the face, or head you will beleive they can stop a person. dead is dead no matter who small the caliber. I very rarely carry, but when i do it is small and easily hid. I have big guns and such, but the small stuff makes me less worried and more secure. Try getting stopped in vega, Tx with out of state tags and a .45 glock in your shoulder holster on a bike. Took some talking to get out of that one. By the way I'm no LEO or connected. a .22 in the ankle is nice, just be smart and you won't have problems. |

Tom B, NOT always true... I have dealt with SEVERAL individuals that took MULTIPLE rounds of .22 lr to the head.. MOST just zip around the skull and SOME actually penetrated... but SUPRISINGLY a VERY high number were conscious and alert when I arrived on scene. While they MAY not win a spelling b later on in life ALL but a couple LIVED. That being said... I have ALSO dealt with individuals shot with a .45 acp and a .357 SIG round. NOW THAT did NOT do the BODY GOOD !!!!! Carrying something is better than NOTHING... but if you have NO training and range time... You can most likely do MORE damage than good. Matt. |

I have a concealed handgun license and always carry a pair of G27's and an extra mag for each when I ride. One is in a shoulder holster under my leathers and the other is in this as a backup... http://www.copquest.com/57-3800.htm |

Here in Wisconsin, we are unable to conceal carry due to Gov Doyle. The sooner we get him out of office, the better for Wisconsin in general. Really doesn't matter to me being LEO, but I don't carry when off duty. I have a buddy from the Marines that lives in Tennessee that carries all the time... doesn't matter if on his bike or in his truck. He normally carries a Glock 38 with an in the waistband holster, but has others he carries too. Most of the time he carries in the waistband. Hopefully we will get the veto on Doyle this year when we try and get it passed again. The last few years we were just 1 or 2 votes away from vetoing his decision. I think once it passes, crime will come down some. Chad |

I traded one of my FAL's for this litle monster to add to the collection. Now gotta wait 3 days to fondle it and hit the range!

Interesting - all completely alien to me. I have not even so much as seen a hand gun in real life - ever - apart from on a Sydney cop's belt. In fact, in Aus, possession of a hand gun can mean jail time. In NZ even the Police don't carry. |

A wise man once said something like this. "You can use any caliber you want for self defense, as long as it starts with a 4." |

Chad, There's some stuff hitting the U.S.Supreme Court this week, Friday, that might pave the way for not having to wait out Doyle. |

Hey Mikej, thanks for the heads up. I haven't really been paying attention to the news lately, so I'll have to keep an ear out. It still sucks we have Doyle though. Once he's out, WI will have a lot less headaches. |

>>Dave, don't you know we're all a bunch of rootin'-tootin' cowboys up here?<< Nah - I don't think that Johnny - My theory involves History and environment of the two cultures. There are no large carnivores or predators to worry a human here. No bears, no wolves, no large cats. Crocs in the far north maybe, but they are thousands of miles from major population centers. Dingos are sly and cunning, and there are easier pickings. So we stopped needing a gun for survival against threat in the outback after the early settlers ran off or killed the Aborigines - who had happily survived for 40,000 years armed with a Stick and a Boomerang. So we kinda put the guns away and gravitated away from them. Then that f***er went mad in Tasmania and rifles are pretty much outlawed too. Not as restricted in NZ. I don't make any judgements, the situations are products of the environment as far as I can see. Personally I am glad we don't share that part of American culture. Dave, Only bear I ever saw was in Virginia and it was about the size of a big dog. So don't believe that crap about "Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My". Most folks I know have to go to a Zoo to even see a deer! It's the worse things we need guns for, the hoods, crooks and crackheads here on the US of A. After all THEY can kill you and get away with it 1/2 time. Like a friend of mine (A Cop too!) said once "Shoot to kill, less paperwork"! |

Yeah - just a theory - but I think you have to look further back though. We have crack heads and gangstas. they are just not as easily armed. I don't for a minute think that they aren't armed. just not as easily - and they go away for it. |

>>Like a friend of mine (A Cop too!) said once "Shoot to kill, less paperwork"!<< Just for contrast: A NZ cop would 'direct you to comply'. They ran a trial on Tazers for cops this year. Govt decided against them. There is an armed offender SWAT squad - the past commander of which is a pretty good mate - and the patrol cars have weapons in the trunk. I suspect it all won't last that much longer. |

Do you worry about the firearms discharging on impact if you do fall off? 'Slight gravel rash, and I holed Bruce's tank' with a hip shot. |

These days you'd be pretty hard pressed to get an accidental discharge. Probably have to have a handgun surgically removed before that, and even then you're biggest concern would be a hospital intern pulling the trigger to see if it's loaded once they pull it out of you. Maybe we should talk about fanny packs some more...

Hmmmmmm...I'll try to refrain from ruffling any feathers, but if given the choice in an urban environment, I'll take a good knife first, then an easily concealable handgun. The key is to listen to that little voice in the back of your head that tells you that you probably shouldn't be where you are before it's too late & you need to decide what you are going to do. Soooooo...my personal preferences in order: 1) AVOID the situation to begin with 2) If I can't avoid it, look for a path/means of escape/evasion 3) If I can't escape/evade, which tool is the best for the application, knife or gun? (And there are a LOT of factors to be determined in making the "correct" decision here.) 4) If I've gotten to #3, I've already determined that someone is going to be DEAD. That person/persons may or may not be me. Now before I get flamed, I'd like to remind you I'm a USMC combat vet, who used to teach protective measures to government employees travelling to high threat areas and I live in TX where it seems everyone is packing. My experience is that it's better to have & not need, than need & not have. It's also better to AVOID trouble whenever/however before you need. With that being said, it's rare for me to carry a gun, but I ALWAYS carry a knife. Enjoy & YMMV |

I live in central Minnesota, town of about 20,000 people. Last year the police captured a 140lb mountain lion in town, 4 blocks from the hospital I work in. Every winter my mother has lion tracks thru her yard at least once. A month ago my nephews three year old twins were within 20 feet of a 50lb coyote in the woods next to my brothers house. Weighed it after I put three rounds of .45LC into it. Large dangerous predators abound in the upper midwest, I believe in killing them when necessary. Have a really nice lever action 45 in the truck at all times. My brother has a 200lb black bear living in his wood lot, mainly cool as they don't really bother people much. If we can keep the damn tourists from feeding it we shouldn't have to kill it. A good friend lives in Lafayette,CA east of Oakland. They now have a cougar living in the ravine behind his house, killed two miniature goats and a standard bred poodle. He is left with banging loudly on a pan as even discharging a pellet rifle is banned. He might need a permit to annoy the cougar, not sure on that yet. Anyone living where the ability to defend yourself is outlawed needs to change the law or move. |

good points Matt. there are exceptions to the .22 thing. But i would rather carry something small and hid then nothing, or big and bulky and draw unwanted attention. I tend to agree with the post above, try to avoid a bad situation to start with. |
