Its been a busy couple of months... for anyone that is interested here is a quick summary: New suit/boots: Frank Thomas Ti suit (so far so good) Alpine Stars SMX+ boots  New tires: Another interesting way of getting the bike off the ground...  Pirelli Diablo Corsa (very interesting tires)  New Computer/table: This thing is a monster, and makes working with larger assemblies a dream; Two Opteron 254 4Gb ram Quadro FX4500 Windows XP Professional x64 Built the table out of 1" ply, with a cut-out for a glass top... bolted directly to the wall (and a filing cabinet to support the hanging edge.  Broken belt: As some may remember I had a small rock puncture my belt a while back... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/148893.html?1127785310 well 10,000 miles later it finally snapped ( I am surprised that it lasted so long)  Torn wires in ignition: I will post a video once I am able to convert it... The dash would suddenly go off while I am riding, or with the ignition off the dash would light up when I moved the handlebars... Before:  After:  And the grand finale: At this point I am about half way through my first quarter (currently 3rd year at College/University) at UCLA as a Mechanical Engineer. But best of all NO LOANS or help from parents... Although a scholarship would be nice... But do not get me wrong, without my parents I would have never gotten this far... Thanks, The tires are very nice especially for longer sweepers, they are not quite as nice for more technical roads compared to the Pilot Powers (although I have a feeling that it is just an illusion, as I may be going quicker now...) I am running SW 2007 x64... If you are looking for a second monitor IBM sells certified used monitors for dirt cheap. My work did not cover the computer or the monitors, but let me tell you it is well worth it... especially if you are working with larger assemblies. Also if you are currently using CRT monitors your eyes will thank you, I can actually see after a day of working. As for the table... A rib is required to prevent the front of the table from flexing. I hope this will be of use: Its the only way that I could figure out how to glue and screw on the rib without having screw-holes on the work surface:  Although it takes a bit more work to get the glass inlay it is well worth it... It makes the space seem "lighter", and makes manual drafting very nice. | ||

I have one 20inch LCD and a kick a$$ machine. (cant remember the stats off the top of my head but it halls balls with ProE and our data management system) I they are talking about giving us two monitors but I might do it anyway and if they do just take it home. I agree with your layout, I cant see another way to do it off the top of my head. I can see what I might be doing tonight. Write a bill of materials and off to home depot!! (damn I work to much) | ||

That is also an option... I just checked the IBM site and it looks like they are out of the 20.1" monitors. Let me know how the table turns out... | ||

Bearly, Yeah that is the courtesy scratching provided by Bartel's Harley for a low low price of $120... That was the last time I got my tires changed there... I am not sure about the contrast resolution (I did not know that was something typically specified) But native resolution is 1600x1200 and Contrast ratio 400:1 They are IBM L200P | ||

Resolution, what was I thinking? Yes its the contrast ratio. I was just looking for something over 10,000 for photo editing. Thanks! Sorry about your wheels dude. My Harley shop doesn't scratch but they are expensive. The Jap shop across the street is cheap but they scratch my wheels as well. I think I have a big "L" on my forehead. | ||

Doerman, Well... It was coming along very well; I put the new tires on, the 520 chain (which just bolted on, I was surprised and delighted that I got it right the first time around), new ignition unit/coils. Things were going very well, not to mention that thing handled incredibly well, but I ended up selling it to a friend who needed a way to get around. At the moment is seemed like a good idea, as it would used regularly and still be close enough for me to have a little fun once in a while. Then he ended up hitting a spare tire on the freeway in the middle of the night... I will help him put her back together... Bearly, That is one heck of a contrast ratio... At this point I have only seen that one some HD screens... although if that is what you need it may be a viable option. Well now I just take the wheels off and take it to a local motorcycle club, where I get a set of tires+mounting for around $250 (for something like the Diablo Corsa/Pilot Power 2CT). Spiderman, Heck yeah! After all they are much cooler then spiderman... psh! whoever that is... JK BTW, I am running Solidworks 2007 x64 | ||

For future reference, the reinforcement for the table front could be done with a biscut joiner. You could then put the support rib anywhere you want, no screw holes to hide. Glue and biscuts are VERY strong and invisible. Wood working is fun once in a while... especially if you have the tools! Brad | ||

Hugh, I have thought the same thing before. But who better can respect the Engineering Marvel (no not the comics Spidey) that is a Buell motorcycle.  Interex, I just picked this up this weekend for any manual drafting I might have to do. It is few and far between but you cant turn down free!!!  | ||

Thanks for the update on the GPZ. I hope your friend was unhurt and that the GPZ can be put together again. It's amazing what you can come across on the freeway system in LA. | ||

The number of ME on badweb is really quite staggering, and I would have to agree that it must have something to do with Buell's mechanical elegance.... Hughlysses, Many thanks; and to think a few years ago my future was uncertain at best. Bluzm2, That is a great point. Now if only I had a biscuit jointer... A wood shop would be a great thing to have around, and perhaps a few old woodworking machines. Tq_freak, That is certainly not something that can/should be passed up, congrats on the find. Iamike, I have had too much bad luck getting tires off the wheels... I have cracked quite a few rims in the past, albeit they were spoked and I was using a couple of long screw drivers/crowbar... I suppose I would have more success with proper tools, but then I get a discount on tires when I get them mounted at the moto club... | ||

Doerman, Fortunately he was nearly unharmed during the accident. The GPZ is definitely going to be making a return, a second resurrection. In fact I just ordered some "rotor pullers" from McMaster-Carr. Luckily the city is usually pretty good at getting rid of crap off the highways. Joe, So far so good, but still a long way to go... I still need to work on the bullet cam some more... I want to get a power converter, so I will not have to deal with batteries. Also I need to modify the camera to allow me to run an "external" mic... I was thinking of machining the rear to fit a LEMO connector, adding two more leads for the external mic... As well as getting rid of some of the wire clutter. |
