The SMC is a sweet bike - KTM maintenance is a bit cumbersome/detailed, and I'd wait a year or two to see if they have the bugs worked out of the motor, however, yeah - Erik really missed a bet on not putting out a more powerful single to ride - especially with the resources he has to make it happen - ah well - such is life - still 305lbs with 65 hp is nice!

I think this one is ugly as sin, but for that kind of performance, much is forgiven.

Hey, here's an idea for the new Blast replacement: take the back cylinder off the new 1125 engine, stick it in an old tube-frame, re-cycle some X1 bodywork, and you have this.
Easy has pie.

I'm not a big fan of the pointy origami fad, nor of the supermoto look, but I do like the idea of ultralight, high power canyon strafing artillery and I do like the idea of FUN!

There have already been prototype Buell/Rotax 450 motors made. Maybe they'll find a home someday.

Looks aside, it looks very well executed.

I could live with it.

Yep, Erik is overflowing with resources, he just likes to tempt people and then not deliver. That fool Erik. I mean with all the resources at his disposal as well as his beck and call, why did it take 19 years to get the 1125 R from functional mock-up into production? He just likes to sit on all his resources and cheat us all. Aaaauuuggghhh!

With all due respect - the Blast remains unchanged now for going on to 9 years - please - if he thought he was going to do something with it, he would have by now - so saying that - which has nothing to do with the single scene we are talking about, is a waste - I'm sure he is doing everything to move the Buell cause forward, however, in the process some cool ideas do get put aside and overlooked - I and others feel this is one - no shot at EB - who I respect greatly, just an observation that I and others have made.

I'd agree with the above. Just as people have been calling for a bike like the 1125 for years many have been wanting something more than the Blast has to offer in a single.

It's not like anyone made a big stink over a 450 dirtbike or anything

Wouldn't it be funny if someone picked up a book next year . . . found out there was a RUNNING 1125r in existence in 1986 and they started wondering what the other 5 things Erik, with all his resources, was holding out on us. . .

That Erik is such a kidder . . .

seriously . . . aren't your glad those photos were taken now?

The BLAST, I hope and pray, remains unchanged and eventually challenges the KLR as the longest running bike that was . . . er, "just right".

The BLAST is an inspired piece of work.

Aside from the front end, the rest of the KTM looks familiar, especially the under slung exhaust. The sad fact, most people won't realize Buell started the whole under slung exhaust mass centralization thingy. Hell, I still have people asking me, "what kind of bike is that?"

Well H-D had a liquid cooled V-4 in 1976. That's an interesting historical fact but fairly irrelevant as it never went further than prototype.

I like the new Duke. Sure, there's little in new ideas but it's features are reminiscent of the things that attracted me to the S1 those many years ago.

Them KTM SM's are sweet bikes. But, they'll never be a V Twin (American Muscle Bike) Buell. I wouldn't mind having one parked along side the XB tho.

I'm not sure if EB really started it. He made it popular, no doubt. But I think others have experimented with it before Buell existed. This isn't a new discussion.

Why is it that all the others haven't put the muffler under the bike before? Simple, it took up volume where race belly pans needed to be. There was room inside the pan for pipes but not a muffler. As all the others were racing their bikes in the big leaugues and Buell was not, other than in the class created just for them, putting the muffler under the bike was a hinderance. It also consumed ground clearance...especially if you wrapped a belly pan around it. I lost about 1" of clearance on my X1...not good for racing. For the street it wasn't a hinderance.

Now all the others are putting the muffler under the bike because they need the volume to deaden the sound for EPA reasons. Trying to put a muffler so huge on the side is no longer an option. EB didn't patent the laws of physics. Everyone else is putting the muffler down below these days oout of necessity. The race bikes will be ditching that heavy mass of metal under the bike in favor of something lighter.

"Erik really missed a bet on not putting out a more powerful single to ride - especially with the resources he has to make it happen" - hey now - there was no disrespect in that line, only an observation - if I thought Erik could read our minds and whip out what we wanted - then it would be disrespect - I think he is driven to make Buell an icon - and he's done well in that, however, some bets where missed - either through his or higher corporate decisions that he did't wish to battle - picking your battles wisely - still from the very beginning folks have wanted to see the Blast revamped and see an American single 'Different in Every Sense' with Erik's stamp on it appear - the Blast remains unchanged - thats a lot of potential lost - doesn't matter on which side of the fence you sit on - that fact remains - you said yourself that others prevented future projects from arising around the Blast - and if I was pushing to improve my main line, I'd probably not stand as strong on my secondary either. Still KTM has struggled as well and still have managed to put out a really nice single - I expect Erik could do even better if he had wanted to and I still have hopes he will.

So anyway, as long as we apparently have at least one annnomi's attention -

What's up with the under engine muffler on that Duke? Is their execution significantly/sufficiently different than Buell and skirts the patent? Did the patent run out? Are they licensing the tech?

It's a real curious thing to see because while the big four are implimenting low slung, centralized exhausts, they still are doing it differently.

It's OK. I'm sure E-Z didn't mean anything bad by it. I for one know that he really likes the Blast and I love mine. Just keep working hard and don't let the guys dreaming and drooling over the possibilities get you down. If the Blast can make a Bueller out of me and I was against the brand for years, you're doing something right.

I'm going to venture in here:

True the Blast was revolutionary in design, my friends who spend zillions on their bikes, don't have as much fun as I do. However the Blast may be considered lacking in power, but there is a reason for that.

I am betting that the whole project was funded under the guise of helping HD out with their Riders Edge marketing program to sell HDs, and I am sure that the experienced gained by the development of the Blast benefited Buell with the design and manufacturing of the XB line and that has snowballed into what we now have. So it was a kind of a win-win situation. I am sure that if Erik was not able to sell the Blast project to the Riders Edge program and the HD marketing guys and get their support we probably would still be waiting for the XB line. Could you imagine 20 Riders Edge students learning the friction zone with a 65 hp Blast?
We all have witnessed what happened to the Buell dirt bike project, the funding simply ran out, they projected return on investment and it wasn't there. HD does what is good for HD, I see no reason for HD to persue the dirt bike market (I see HD as slowly crawling towards extinction, and I hope they wake up and take the situation seriously before it is too late, but I am just a hickabilly so what do I know?)
