(Lawrenceville-AP) Federal authorities have started deportation proceedings against an 85-year-old suburban Atlanta man who they say served as a Nazi guard and trained and handled attack dogs at Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps.

The Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security have filed a charging document making the allegations against Paul Henss -- a German citizen who lives in Lawrenceville. Authorities say he entered the U.S. in 1955 after hiding his concentration camp service.

The document says Henss joined the Hitler Youth organization in Germany in 1934 as a 12 or 13-year-old boy and joined the Nazi Party in September 1940.

The document says he entered the Waffen SS. It says the following year he volunteered to became an SS dog handler and served from 1942 to 1944 at the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps in Germany.

Authorities say Henss instructed other guards in the use of trained attack dogs to guard prisoners and prevent their escape, and personally guarded prisoners to keep them from escaping the concentration camps.

The document says Henss admitted on March 13th that he served as an SS guard at Dachau and Buchenwald for two to three months each as a dog handler.

wow, the real deal not one of the wanna-be "neo-nazis". I thought that nearly all of the originals had died by now, but there are always stragglers.

Personally, I don't care how long ago it was, or how much peer pressure there was. What they did was totally inexcusable.

You can run, you can hide, but eventually the secrets get out.

When I was about 12 years old, I asked my girl friends (now my wife) uncle what those numbers were tattooed on his arm. Walter was kind enough to explain it to me, but since I wasnt Jewish, at that age I really didnt comprehend it all. As the years when by I understood, but what really made me realize what the Jews and Gypsies when through, was watching Shindlers List.

As long as they can prove the man was a guard, and did what hes accused of, I have no problem deporting an 85 year old man

That one 85 year old man is not the problem in Lawrenceville, let me tell ya.

And really think about it.......At age 12 did he really KNOW what he was doing?

I am not defending him,but there are illegals that are destroying the town and economy that we can do nothing about......but we can waste TAX money to deport a decrepit old NAZI.

maybe the guy deserves to be deported but why can't it be just as easy to deport all these other illegals that create havock in our neighborhoods.we don't need illegals to do the work that no one else wants to do in this country, we need to use the prison system to do alot of these jobs.

2007 - 1942 = 65
85 - 65 = 30 20 years old at the time he served at the camps.
Yeah, he knew what he was doing.

(tired, grumpy, hit the wrong button on the on-screen calculator, still old enough to know what he was doing though )

They should just let him go free.

It would be a pity if he were mugged once a week every week for the rest of his life.

Yeah, he knew what he was doing.

Actually only 20, but you're right, he should have known better.

Do the crime, you should be held accountable, no matter how much time has passed.

You can say he knew better, but being conditioned since he was a little kid to believe these things were okay, I wonder if you can really say he knew what he was doing. Again, not defending him, but I really don't see a point in his deportation.

"Zero-Tolerance" for the actual Nazis, not sure exactly why that is. "Volunteering" to be the dog handler in the home guard is just as likely "volunteering" NOT to go to the Russian Front, if you know what I mean.
I'm not defending what he did, but what do we think all those German people should have done, in their circumstances? It's a complicated world, not everybody is heroic.

I'm thinking he was more than just a pawn in a big game. I'll keep ire and ill will for a man like this. I used to live in Lawrenceville; I wouldn't want him living next to me.

If the Nazi being conditioned and desensitized at age 12 can be used to explain or justify his participation at age 20, then the same distorted logic can be applied to video gaming and coorelated to the desensitization of gang bangers relative to the crimes against society that they commit today.

Not saying that's what I believe, just that it's what some believe.

Anybody thought about him being just a soldier following orders. When I was in the Army I followed around more than one idiot because of what he had on his sleeve or collar. Before the mob tries to lynch me I dont believe in what they did just like the rest of the world. But I have been a soldier

The nazi youth is a little different than a video game or music.

Either way, if the deport him, good on 'em I say.
Comparing to illegals is not a good battle.
No nazi is claiming he's gonna do a job an American won't do.
I don't buy that either, I also won't argue politics on the internet, so it's a moot point.

Funny thing is, I started this thread thinking "how bizarre", I had no idea (at the time) the thread was going to go in this direction.

The way I understand it. It doesnt matter if he was brainwashed or conditioned as a youth.I doesnt matter if, because of his conditioning, he thought what he was doing was right or wrong.
That isnt the issue, or the reason hes being deported.
Fact: He new he was a guard
Fact: He was asked when entering the U.S. if he was involved in the Nazi party in anyway, and he knew he was.
Fact: He lied
Fact: That lie is a criminal offense, if trying to gain residency in the U.S. and is cause for denial of entry into the United States of America.

That is not entirely true.
A.) if he was a repatrated POW which was highly probable no questions would have been asked.
b.) They stopped asking those questions awhile after we the US let all the NAZI scientists in no questions asked cause if we didn't the Russians would have
c.) Everyone was hitler youth or hitler maidchen no choice I know this because my mother in law was HM and they all got a book.
That being said this guy is probably a stone cold fascist Nazi bastid and should probably die for the cause but living for 65 plus years knowing your a looser whith no hope of redemption has probably taken its toll. I hope anyway.
