Remove the primary cover and check the end of the shift drum for a what looks like a star with rounded edges. I forgot the name of it..Sorry. It just peeks out from behind the clutch.

If I did the upload correctly the you can see the the part on the left side of the shift drum.See if the clip is missing

Doh!! and Duh!!
Thanks Rag

Hoping thats all it is also. These trannys don't have many problems. This is just the one I see from time to time. Actually just happened on an S3 2000 Buell that the other mech. owns.

5th gear drive assembly... the internal needle bearings may have failed.

Have to pull the tranny to get to it. If it's pre 2005, pulling the transmission is a fairly easy job.

(Did the sportsters loose the trapdoor tranny in 2005 when they went to the Buell motor? I am guessing they did)....

Reep - they lost in 2004 when they got the Buell-derived engine.

As a lighter inspection, you could probably take off the sprocket cover, and pop off that dust seal that is seated inside that 5th gear assembly, and see *something*... It might not be conclusive if things are OK, but if you pull it out and have rusty mud full of pieces of needle bearing assembly, or see the two pieces welded together, you have your answer.
