You're right- the pic is actually taken in '73, although the model year on the XR is '72. The '73 had a smaller tank logo that was more orange than red, if i remember correctly. I moved up to it from my Yammie Mini-Enduro, which was a strange 4 stroke transition to make. Raced XRs (MX, hare-scramble) until I outgrew 'em, moved up to Mom's hand-me-down Hodaka ace 100, which we'd long ago converted for track. she could still take me on her Combat wombat, though, while dad's Big yammie 360 was like a quarter-horse on crank. Big brother rode the super rat for awhile.

Tramp, I don't think there was a '72 XR. I think it did come out at the end of '72 but was pegged as a '73. I believe is was SL 70's up until then. My cousin had a yellow sl 70 and taught me how to ride. Gotta love those Hodaka's. Started my racing on a '75 RM 125S. The first of the RM's. Big leap from the TM's |

Ooooo...that's a nice looking pic. Some friends and I want to meet somewhere to ride rather than go all the way to the Baja peninsula again. Where exactly is that? We're having a very difficult time finding great places to go that aren't rock crawling jeep trails or simply dirt roads. |

I need some dirt bike info I have 2 Bombardier 4 wheelers that just sit in my garage and I want to get rid of them for 2 dirt bikes. I have been looking at the Honda CRF150 for my wife and a CRF230 for me. My question is, will the 230 have enough grunt to make me happy? The game plan is to trade the 4 wheelers for the dirt bikes with as little $$ out of pocket as possible. So a used bike may be in my future. This is all part of my evil plan to get my wife involved with 2 wheels. |

I would go bigger but it all depends on what you are doing. The CRF 450 would be my choice. Maybe even the 450X so you can put a plate on it. |

230 gonna be way small for you. I'd do the four fitty. You can always ride slow. Plenty of torque. Now Jason, the cat that owns the bike shop has a 2 fitty and swears by it. Hes bigger than me. If we ever get together I can arrange a ride on it. |

Wolf, I have an XL250. These bikes were good for me fifty lbs ago and with a sprocket change for tight tough woods riding. Since I am not as serious about working out in the woods as I used to be, it is enough, but barely. When I was serious about it, I rode a Yamaha TT 500 for several years and never hurt for power. With a Supertrap on a header and race gas it would do long steep hill climbs in what ever gear I wanted. It could destroy a new knobby in a weekend and it would run 95 mph, not bad for a dirt bike from 1979. I recommend the 450 for you and probably have the wife try the 230 to see if she can reach the ground and handle the extra size and weight. If she is not comfortable on the 230, go with the 150. Like they said you can always restrict your throttle use with your brain, but after you get used to it you will find extra power a handy tool to get and keep you out of trouble. In the woods a lack of power often means picking the bike back up. |

Two new dirt bikes can sit in the garage too. Maybe just load up the four wheelers and ride?? |

Gotta ride them into the air! Wheelies and jumps and such. What size are they? Gotta be at least a 650 to be fun with a four wheeler. |

I've got a CRF450 that I use for serious off road and a DRZ 400 for dual sport riding. Of course there's also my 72 CL450 old school scrambler.
I need a bigger garage! |

The right atv might make you happy too. I beat the crap out of my 400ex and it runs like a top. One of the best sounds in the world is a good size thumper with a pipe pinned out going up a treacherous hill. -the dirt bikes are different, but only in the sense of being comfortable and having your energy last you. I love that I can cruise around and just stop and sit on the quad. |
