We've talked about everything else, and this before as well, so why not. They're going through another round of layoffs/terminations here again, and right after buying a new huge building where they are going to have to at least double or triple the workforce. In the interim they are letting people go. I think there's less than 100 people here and three were dumped out yesterday. Rumor is at least one will go in the department I'm in in the near future, all while the customers are demanding that we add staff to support the workload because we sometimes fall behind due to limited resources. Oh well, I don't make the rules, I just try to dodge the bullets.  In the mean time I keep considering opening up my own business, transitioning to a new career, finding a new position elsewhere, and so forth. Not really looking for any suggestions or support, just opening up a dialog for people to comment, vent, rant, suggest, inquire, so forth and so on. JW had a similar thread a while back but I think it got buried, others have opened up similar threads in the past as well. They come, they go, the ebb and flow of life and work I guess. Time to dig out the HotDogCart and CoffeeShop startup business books again, time to review the careers for writers books, time to dive into the other careers and business books, time to freshen up the ol' resume one more time. I'm still safe and potentially secure here for the time being. But experience has shown me that when cuts are made common sense and departmental needs often take a back seat to front office mandated headchops. Oh well, such is life. Carry on. | ||

My job has been borderline for the last 2 years or more, but somehow the company I work for still manages to keep the doors open and stay in the #1 slot for our product. The only downfall of being one of the fortunate 8 or 9 hundred people left working is my seniority at this point in time has bumped me back to 2nd shift. After the 23rd of this month I'll either be doing all the crap jobs till the end of July and get laid off or they will just lay me off, either way I've got a lot to look forward to if things don't pick up by the end of July. | ||

With all the foreign outsourcing, it won't be long before we are all either self employed or working retail sales. FYI, Milwaukee appears to have an abundance of bartenders with MBA's. LOL | ||

I know of a couple of PHd's in Psych who are driving trucks. They had to close their offices because of the HMO cuts in compensation. My company is starting the early retirement, severence pkg thing in one of the divisions. If they wait two years until they get to my division I will take the retirement pkg. Might be %50 of my gross pay with retirement medical benefits. I will be 50years old. Sure I would have to go do something else but that money would be guaranteed for the rest of my life. Probably won't happen but I am dreaming. | ||

"... but that money would be guaranteed for the rest of my life. " Don't be so sure about that. There are many people who believed similar stuff and are now learning that things can change or end. There are many ways companies cut costs, clear down to starting up as a new entity and letting costly programs such as retirement/pension plans go poof with the original organization. Just a heads-up to the wise. | ||

My last day at Ericsson is September 25th. My job, and most of my other fellow employees' jobs here in San Diego, have been moved to Montreal, where the people are 20% cheaper or more. The jobs that those folks in Montreal were doing were moved to China so that they could have the bandwidth to do our jobs. White collar jobs of the mew millenia are what manufacturing jobs were in the 70s/80s. It's a scary world out there right now. Oh well, I have a year of severance pay, and my house is paid off. Came into the world with nothing, might as well leave it that way... Want any fries with that? Geez, I hope it never comes to that. | ||

I could tell you stories you'd not beleive. I've learned more in the last 8 months than in in the last 30 years. Severanace pay is as good as the honesty of the firm/person who promised it. Follow your heart. Writing is an excellent 2nd income. Cathartic and rewarding. Court | ||

I know I am really lucky to have the job I do... but there is always the option of trying graduate school (for the third time!!!! hee hee hee!) and driving cab again. Mikej if you want to open up a coffee shop in Pelican Lake I know how to bake some mean pastries from scratch and I also have the perfect property in mind....  | ||

I decided to join the ranks of the "with out position". The money I was making wasn't worth the abuse I was getting. The state of Florida agreed with me. I also get a by-yearly pension statement from an IT company the fell victim to the junk bond era. The pension plan was federally guaranteed. I have 23 years in the IT industry. I'm currently thinking about getting into civil service (an oxymoron if I ever heard one). I was talking to a guy who graduated High school the year after me. He's got 3 years to go before full pension. He joined a small town police force right out of high school. Smart guy. I went for the big bucks in IT. JT | ||

I'm only 24, so I only know what my father has taught me about the working world and success. His two rules. 1. Make yourself valuable, prove that you can do anyones job in the building, and do it better. When you have the oportunity to do someone elses job, do it. 2. Save every penny you can, be smart with your money. Keywords here are Roth IRA. This is his only advice on my carrer, but it works. He retired at 49 and only has a high school diploma. I think, in our society, we live beyond our means and expect too much from life for free. Took a Business minor during my undergrad years. The 90 year old organizational behavior professor stated pretty much every day "Nobody in this room deserves a job upon graduation, you must all earn it." Now if it ever stops raining I would like to go riding and forget about the supposed bad economy. I've gotten two promotions in the past year. | ||

hehe - I wish I still had the 300 bucks I got a couple of years ago. Let's see, property tax went up 30% this year on the "fixer upper" house I bought last year - got officially divorced last year so had to increase my deductions, and that's why I bought the house. Did I mention what a certified master electrician costs these days? Officially we're under a wage freeze at work, but I got promoted this time last year and I'm still waiting for HR to finish processing the paperwork (and no, it ain't gonna be retro so don't even ask). Not to mention I decided to move and change jobs in 2000 just as the tech economy took a header into an empty pool. OTOH my mutual fund is up 13% this year, so I'm only down 50% overall  So I'm putting out some resumes just to see what's out there, but I like my job and my co-workers so it'd have to be a really good opportunity to get me to leave. Seems like a good idea to always have an iron in the fire, though. You never know, tomorrow I could be outsourced. I'm just hoping that the Fannie Mae problems don't cause a downturn in the housing market anytime soon, because the aforementioned fixer-upper is worth twice what I paid for it right now, and I'm kinda planning on buying a farmhouse in the sticks in a couple of years to raise some rugrats. | ||

TAX CUTS...I would rather have my industry back in the US where I could continue my career and pay my fair share. Is going to be hard to maintain our status as a nation of consumers when no one has meaningful employment anymore. Incidentally, I would prefer Investment Tax Credits to US manufacturers to create US jobs over Tax Cuts any day. However, I don't believe that would be in the interest of any politicians hoping to get re-elected within 2 years. |
