http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1998-BUELL-S1-WHITE -LIGHTNING-RACE-BIKE-PARTS-S2-X1-XB_W0QQitemZ19013 4798082QQihZ009QQcategoryZ35576QQssPageNameZWDVWQQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Saw this on Ebay. It looks like one of the Race of Champions bikes that was run a few years at the Milwaukee Mile during the 95th or Homecoming rally. What do you think? Jeff |

I threw a low bid at it and I'll be damned if I didn't get it. What is wrong with people out there?? Guess I am going to Vegas. |

I was going to bid on it. But, South Florida to Vegas is one hell of a trip in my pickup truck. The gas alone would add another $1,000 to the price. I had to pass it up. Man I wanted that thing! |

Great pick up FMJ!!! I had that on my watch list. If it wasn't so far from me, I was giving it some serious concideration also. |

Good catch FMJ! Like Blake I'm wondering if you're looking to go road racing Seriously though, if that bike is as original as it looks to be it would be a crime not to restore it to original spec.... and then take it to the track for a few track days (minimum). |

Like maybe Laguna Seca in Dec?? Rex, that auction had the bidders id's blocked so we could not tell who was bidding. I even felt guilty bidding on it so got up and lowered my bid before going to bed as I am really not in the market--but what the heck. |

I made a mad rush to Vegas and back on friday, took a staggering 19 hours--can you say beat. The bike is very cool, some parts missing but overall in great shape, the cases look like new! Rear peg mounts cut away, tires still scuffed from edge to edge. Will post pics later. |

Interesting looking at the bike, has original WP shock, spring is not all beat up like ones with some mileage on em, brake pads look near new, only has a single gauge mount--I am assuming had a tach only, has Race A/C backing plate, rider was Thomas Wilson and it is signed by him. Has a great "Sponsored by BattleTwin" sticker on it, Reg. Missing rear caliper,A/C cover and element(Darn, just sold one!!)front sprocket and belt, complete exhaust system, front speedo drive, tachometer, rear fender, front fender has R/S ear broken off, front master cyl is missing clamp for mount and lever. I have some stuff and will search out the rest |

Reg gave me a nudge on where to go look so I dug out BattleTwin volume 2,issue 3 and it has an article on the Battle of the Champions. Seems these bikes came with a Race exhaust set-up and it has a front mount with no arm for the Heimholtz bread box. Damn, I just sold a race pipe! |

Well I got bike into barn and started searching my parts bins, installed a tach, replaced the front master cylinder missing pieces, new l/s grip, found the speedo drive and spacer missing from front wheel and another front rotor,a K&N element, still looking for my extra rear caliper. Brankin may have some of the original stickers for me, Pregrid may have a S-1W pipe,it's getting there. |

I took these pictures at Daytona USA a couple of years ago. It looks like a twin to this bike and Higbee rode it. Jeff

Actually, I think Hals still has their "twin" to that bike sitting up above the showroom. |

Great find! I remember reading that article in Battle2Win. I just found it in my old magazine...interesting. It was a "Who's Who" of Buell/HD racing on identical S1W's, with 5 dirt trackers facing off against 5 road racers, and included such stars as Scott Parker, Jay Springsteen, Kevin Atherton, Chris Carr, Randy Texter, Pascal Picotte, Shawn Higbee, Jamie James, Billy Graef and Thomas Wilson. They raced on the paved oval Milwaukee Mile track in front of 35,000 fans. According to B2W, "The first race was a 12 lap laugher, excuse, lapper, featuring a freight train and a chance for everyone to lead...The final race was a furious four laps pitting the top two finishing sideways racers, Springsteen and Parker, against the top two pavement pushers, Picotte and Higbee...At the finish it was -- just barely --Picotte." During the practice laps the "riders came off of the track laughing from the various 130 miles per hour grab-ass activities...". I wonder if they have ever heard of 'fire and ice'? Tom Wilson, on bike #30 was in there too, and he had on Hals leathers. I don't recall him racing for Hals, but he must have been in the Lighting Series. For what it is worth, the bikes appeared to have had the passenger peg mounts at the time of this event. Reg reports that the bikes were dyno tested and showed a RWHP in the high 80's. Brankin was the official mechanic for #50 Billy Graef, who collided with a bird during practice. It is good to harken back to the days of yesteryear. |

Brankin was the official mechanic for #50 Billy Graef Still got the autographed (by Billy Graef, Jerry Wilke and this Erik Buell guy) flyscreen hanging on one of my walls:
As well as the T-shirt autographed by all the participants in the race:
Notice anything out of the ordinary on the sleeve?
Oh yeah, Richard Petty was kind enough to sign the hat that day as well (hard to see, but it is there).

It is good to harken back to the days of yesteryear. Indeed! (Part 1) I've already sent Jim all of the high resolution scans of the (very few) pictures I have of the Battle of Champions in 1998, but I thought everyone else might be interested in seeing some of them. It was a very interesting day for Buell history... First off, here are the Buell escort bikes used at the event; Defender, Enforcer and Peace Keeper:
Another view of the 3 bikes with the piece of artwork from Reg Kitrelle and Battle2Win:
And if you look closely, the Battle of Champion bike nearest to the Enforcers flyscreen ins the #30 Tom Wilson bike:
Interestingly the S1W AMA Sweep Bike was in attendance as well (I believe the white F-150's bed that it is in just may have been Court's...):
