I've got about 22,000 on my M2, and the rear cylinder has begun to weep oil from around it's base on the back side. Is the only solution to this tearing the engine down to the case, or can Ijust tighten up some head bolts to get the thing to stop leaking? Thanks. | ||

Since it is on the rear cyl and on the Back Side ( I am assuming you mean by the starter;)) Are you sure it is the Base gasket and not the starter gasket? The starter gasket will be a easy fix, pull the primary, remove the starter bolts and wiggle the starter out and slip the new gasket in. If it is the base gasket then there is only one option, top end... | ||

No, I'm not positive that it's the base gasket, but I'm pretty sure that it is, as it appears to be leaking right at the base of the cylinder. Well it maybe be time for some Nallin stuff in there anyway. | ||

To check, give her a GOOOOD cleaning, get every bit of oil off you can. Then coat the suspected are in talcum powder and ride it for a few miles and then check. They also sell a special coating that can do the same or a UV inhibitor you can put in the oil that will make it glow under black light that will spot a leak... Get her narrowed down first. It would suck to do a bunch of "Nallin stuff" and still be leaky... | ||

I got the same leak... mine's pretty obvious. I've been trying to justify fixing it with a 1250 kit. | ||

Look at the pushrod tubes also. | ||

when I rebuilt my X1, I used the James gasket kit, metal gaskets and Drag Specialties high torque head bolts...excellent stuff. | ||

My 1999 M2 with 36,000+ miles is doing the same thing. Started a couple months ago, at first I freaked out, (I hate oil leaks) but decided to let it go for now since I can't afford a top end job. It hasn't gotten any worse, just a weep that's not really noticeable. I'm going to wait till I can afford a 1250 kit. |
