I always thought this day would be a happy one...

I’m riding back from the Williamsport HD Sportfest and feeling good. After 60 miles of highway riding (boo), I head down the exit ramp, go for the brakes, and about do a stoppy because I seem to have no more rear brake. Once I get pulled over and check out why, this is what I find...

I remember my rear wheel hopping about 30 miles back, but just thought I ran over a little rock. I am assuming that was the caliper hitting the rim.

Along with the removal of the chicken strip, it also scratched the hell out of my rim all the way around.

I changed the rear pads about 3k miles ago, so I am slightly curious why the bolts decided to back themselves out now. Maybe someone is trying to kill me?

No F'n way.

Glad you made it back alright.

You've got to get your XB back together...too.

I'm just glad it didn't rip off the valve stem. Could you imagine loosing tire pressure in the middle of an 80mph sweeper?

DMN! Glad you're OK man! Reminds me of the time I drug my front fender on the tire for about 30 miles one day. The back of it caught the steering dampener. Makes me wonder if we should put some of those fish-eye mirrors on our bikes trained on the wheels so we can keep an eye on them. LOL! Then you could look down periodically and assure yourself they're still rolling.

That is weird about the caliper bolts. Hope nobody's been messing with your bike.

Glad you were ok.

Reminds me of the time my tail light broke off taking my fancy plate holder with it. I felt a thud and the whole assembly wedged between my rim and oil tank, and some how didn't do much damage to either! It must've got jettisoned pretty good as I never did find it!

Glad you're OK, and sorry about the damage. Did you use loctite on the caliper bolts? Regardless of what the manual says, I always use at least Blue on any threads having to do with wheels, suspension, or brakes. It breaks free easily enough with a tool, but rarely if ever on its own.

I already bought a tube of it that afternoon. I will be using blue lock tight on just about everything after this incident.

Glad to hear you made it out ok. And some people say they don't believe in God! I know the man upstairs has saved my stupid azz a time or two when I shouldn't have even been on a bike!

I think there is a set of PMs on e-bay right now that has a slight bend in the front wheel. For what it's worth.

wow. dang. your lucky.

I can just imagine how easily it could have lodged in there and locked the rear wheel up. that would be a really bad thing going straight and just plain awfull on the sweeper.

curious about how not having the rear brake "almost made you do a stoppie" though?

Ds- He probably went to use both, and realizing he didn't have anything in the rear instinct caused him to grab a fist full of front to compensate... though I could be wrong...

Glad your alright!

Icon's right. When I realized I had no rear brake and I wasn't going to stop in time, two things tightened. My right hand and my sphincter. You don't realize how much braking the rear does until it's gone. Luckily, the light changed and there was no traffic, so I let off the brake and dove heavily into the turn.

Hey Cereal!
Glad to see that you made it home OK. Looking at the pictures made me tighten up!
I can't believe that the caliper didn't get jammed in the wheel. Luck was with you.
How are the repairs progressing?

Williamsport put on a pretty good Buell event Sat. I hope you get the bike fixed soon. Once again, glad you didn't have an accident.
