Just wondering! We have a Local UAW ride coming up in May. I know that Buell isnt Union made.. But what pissed me off is that the paper said it like this.....

"Union/American made motorcycles only!(BUELL ISN'T UNION MADE)"

ok, so there throwing Buells under the bus! I know we aren't Union made...BUT we are american made! Why the hell would they say that unless they have some kinda hate?

I mean how many bikes are made in america the are Union made? All they want are harely's...

Now, i cant go to this event anyways, but it pisses me off that they would single the very bike that is made in the same damn factory!!

Union first, company second.

Non-union employees are not really Americans.

Seems stupid, but I guess since the UAW is sponsoring the ride it's their choice....like it or not.
I don't think their going so far as to say
"NON-Union employees are not really Americans"
But it's your right to put what ever spin on it you'd like to, I guess.

So the bike has to be both union made and American? That only leaves Harleys, right?

Why isnt buell Union Made?

It could take 2-3 union workers not to mention union reps on-site to get the work done that one non-union worker could do. It saves them money.

IIRC, both the Honda Gold Wing and the Kawi Concours are made in America. Assuming they are made with union labor, I wonder if they would be allowed to attend?

They are just trying to put pressure on Buell to unionize.

So long as Buell isn't useing the the cheap insurgent labor. aka illegal alliens.

Coming from the counties in Georgia that make 95% of the carpet sold in the US. They don't have unions. They pay level has decreased over the last 10 years. Benfits have decreased as well. Many companies don't even hire a person. They just a temp/staffing agency so that you get NO benifits. Of course the massive amounts of cheap insurgent labor hasn't helped any.

Anybody who touches Buell at Harley is union. Motors/Bikes are tested at the Product Development Center at the Capital Drive Plant, those guys are union.

I'm with Jlnance on this one plus the fact If they called it what it really was (U.A.W. Harley ride), The P.C 5-o would be out in force with charges of exclusion and discrimination.

It's their club and their party hence their rules. Freedom of speech and expression.

Thank god for the Constitution (which bye the way was written by non union patriots!)

Randy ( A proud Union Member and Buell owner!)

United we stand, divided we fall. Works on all levels.

A higher percentage of Americans including minorities own their own homes now than ever before; the carpet factories and other America-based manufacturers must not be too bad.

True, as a union member myself I would be happy to see Buell be a unionized operation on the whole but the realist in me knows that if they were, many of us would not be on this board right now because we would be priced right out of the market and Buell probably would not survive the exodus and more AMERICAN jobs would be lost. I would think the U.A.W would promote their ride under a banner of solidarity for their membership. Instead ( at least to me) it seems they have turned this event into a social aristocracy that probably excludes a good number of their membership as It is most unlikely that a good percentage of the membership can afford the price of a "Harley Davidson lifestyle". I am a motorcyclist, a Sportbike riding motorcyclist! I am happy and thankful that Buell has made for me a package that satisfies my needs as a sportbike rider and I am proud that AMERICAN jobs are supported in it's creation.

Country first, union second... I'm done

Yeah, that's working.

Imo I would chalk that up to a moronically overpriced housing market and shortsighted, sloppy and greedy lenders more than to non-union american labor.
But then again you did introduce some more fuel to keep this thread going , so I am.....uh.. confused?

Buell has undergone a union organizing drive, the company did not interfere in anyway. No threats, intimidation, none of that. The union presented it's case and lost by a very large margin. this may be because the workers at Buell are well paid, have good benefits and like that place they work. It is the type place that really has no need for a union because management is fair and people feel like they are part of the team.

I am not anti union, actually more pro but Buell is run well and people don't need a union to have their concerns addressed.

to answer the original question, because it doesn't have to be

I do NOT know what folks at the Buell plant make (not my business), but I DO know there was (last summer) quite a long waiting list for jobs at all levels in the plant. Each and every time I've been to the plant, the folks that were working there all spoke to the riders, and seemed very happy to do so -- it looked like a nice place to work, and the workers seemed pleased to be there.

not sure what a Union would do for em

Any workplace that votes to join a Union, does because the workers, whether right or wrong, perceive that they are not being treated fairly. If a business pays its workers resonable wages, with reasonable benefits, and treats the employees fairly, they will never unionize. If a Union was voted in, the company had it coming. I have worked for both Union and non-Union workplaces. Happy workers have no incentive to join a Union.

Kdan....about the foreclosure rates....

People bought homes with variable interest rates betting the rates would go down.....Well guess what they went up. In reading the stories in the local paper people are losing their house with as little as a $200 increase in the mortgage payment. That is sad.

They also bought a lot more home than the could live with financially. Of course these are the same people who have the big flat screen TV and two new cars in the garage. They are not saving any money.

Having lived in the Atl area I can vouch that houses were OVER priced and lenders did take part in some tricky paperwork.

A higher percentage of Americans including minorities own their own homes now than ever before; the carpet factories and other America-based manufacturers must not be too bad.

Since I was the one who spent most of my life in the carpet mill area - I can say with fact that illegal insurgents have DRIVEN down the wages in that area. Many working class Americans have moved out. There are a few law suites pending.
