Seems the 'jacking points' are close to the arms of my motorcycle jack, but it seems it would topple right over. How can I stand it straight up without help or jack it up completely in the air? | ||

If you have jackstands, this is how I do it... Flip passenger pegs over, slide one jackstand under the righthand side peg, lift bike and place the left jackstand. It has worked for me...when I need to get the front end off the ground, I do that to the back and then with ratcheting tie downs I hang the front of the frame from the rafters in my garage. Works great...I just put in new seals and bushings in the forks by hokding the bike up this way... | ||

Trying to determine still whether the brentmiller post is serious or sarcastic. I hope it's the latter. Sometimes I have a hard time making out the faces of those typing on the other end of computer land. | ||

if all ya need to do is support the rear wheel off the ground, get a piece of metal rod (hardware store), slide it through the rear axle, and support it using a couple of cheap jackstands -- fast, cheap and ez! | ||

Just don't be me. Last year I opened my garage door all excited about putting my Metzeler shod wheels back on and found my bike laying on it's side in a puddle of it's own gasoline. Auuuuuuuuuugggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh....! | ||

I'm interested in this answer. I too have a motorcycle lift that worked fine for my other bikes, but it doesn't seem to be anyway to get my 99 X1 up up on it. Is there some secret to this, or do I just have to buy on of those jacks that use the axle bolts? | ||

http://www.cyclelifts.com/ They only make the Buell stands from time to time, but it works nice. I bought mine from American Sport Bikes. Tricky to use till you get used to it, it holds the rear wheel off the ground & unloads your suspension in back. Great for wheel changes & shock adjustments. I do suggest placing a 25 lb. bag of lead shot, or sandbag on the handle if you are going to be yanking on big bolts, just to be sure. If I want the front end up, I put a bottle jack under the shock mount. | ||

I welded a couple 1 foot black iron pipe "wings" on one of those jacks so I could easily put tie downs up to the foot pegs. Works great, but unless I am pulling the rear wheel, its a lot easier to put my rebar through the rear axle and throw it on a couple jack stands. You can just lean the bike right to left and ratchet the jack stands up, you don't even need a jack. | ||

Flip passenger pegs over, slide one jackstand under the righthand side peg, lift bike... Essthreetee - genius, pure genius!! I'm doing some work on the rear of the bike. Had it jacked under the rear shock bracket w/ a floor jack and precariously braced w/ some blocks and the sidestand while the rear wheel is off - checking the floor jack a couple times a day to make sure it's not leaking down and chasing the kids out of the garage. I checked this thread out of curiosity and viola, there's the solution to my worries. Thanks for the post - great stuff. |
