I know there's been some discussion on CA's emissions standards before...I didn't think the authorities were ever going to get real serious about it though. A quarter of a million bucks is a pretty hefty chunk of change though - FB2 (CBS) LOS ANGELES "Monster Garage" TV personality and Sandra Bullock's husband Jesse James has agreed to pay nearly $275,000 to settle violations of air regulations by motorcycles he sold, officials said. James' Long Beach shop, West Coast Choppers, sold more than 50 new or custom-built motorcycles that did not meet California Air Resources Board emissions standards, according to a statement by the Air Resources Board. James, 37, wed Bullock in 2005. His Discovery Channel show, which first aired in 2002, follows him and a crew as they remake vehicles into one-of-a-kind creations. Motorcycles being built by West Coast Choppers now comply with emissions standards, according to the Air Resources Board. | ||

This is precisely why dealers are NOT going to be doing non-EPA mods any longer. Remember, there are FEDERAL EPA rules being violated when performance modifications are installed. Just because you're not living here in the People's Republic of California doesn't mean you're not going to be facing this issue for your non-DOT and non-EPA parts. I hope that dealers (the good ones) - can continue installing the goodies, leaving it up to the conscience of the customer. EPA regulation enforcement, coming to a neighborhood near you... The Nazi's are revving up, and with my meeting this past week with SEMA officials over emissions legislation and different things, the future is indeed grim my friends (especially with our dems in office). Part of the plan is to bring attention to other industries, such as Shipping and stationary polluters and make them do their share to improve air quality and not make the automotive/motorcycle industries the sole industry scape goats. --Sean | ||

You can thank (in part) the LOUD pipe butt holes for the tightening motorcycle regulations, the "look at me now" crowd is getting looked at now, but so are all us regular everyday riders. It's a good thing the Fashion Police didn't show up along with the CARB lads, the fines would have been MUCH higher.  | ||

I think it has more to do with a large number of people moving in a small area together, stinking up the place and then making new laws to fix what they did. The only problem is not all of california has a smug problem. | ||

Nazi's for protecting the environment???? I agree diesel trucks pump out more crap than a motorcycle. I think California is ticked off about all of the noise pollution, I bet all or most of those bikes(Jesse James) were open pipes with no baffles at all. The enforcement has to start somewhere, and besides it worked we are talking about it here. The world is on loan to us from our children. Think about it. Well franklin county has a big time pollution problem.....I think last summer we had more days with air quality alerts than those with out. Why I have no idea? Didn't seem right to me. I thought the whole state needed done. It is kinda tragic that we can't clean up the air because it is too expensive. Don't get me started on that one. Most Americans have their priorities pretty screwed up. YES Good bye Taft. | ||

It will get a lot worse here in Cali in 2008. I've heard that the feds will catch up in 2010 but I don't know that for a fact. Bikes will get periodic smog inspections/tests like cars here soon too. A new law for Cali just this year, a vehicle fails an inspection if it shows ANY smoke, even if it passes emissions. | ||

you have to smog your bikes in arizona... california you do not. My california buells would not pass arizona emissions test. Had to take them into the shop and have them retuned..... exhausts are next, mark my word. you will have to pass a sound test at the emissions testing station, and the cops will carry emissions testing machines and sound units with them.....I bet they start pulling folks over and testing them. cave creek in arizona has a sound law for motorcycles now.... rex will need to move to oklahoma and enjoy my riding..... | ||

Let me guess, city/county buses and government owned vehicles are still exempt, right? Ohio's state vehicles didnt get tested either. I think in the case of Ohio it was just another feel good law like the assault weapons ban. It was a nuisance and based on studies didnt do much to help the environment. | ||

cave creek in arizona has a sound law for motorcycles now.... Carefree had to take down the noise abatement signs picturing motorcycles. I haven't been over there lately, I am sure they are still targeting bikes. A Catch 22, Cave Creek is biker friendly and about the only way to get there is through Carefree (don't the name fool you) (Message edited by BCordb3 on January 28, 2007) | ||

I'd heard that AZ was getting some tough smog laws. Government (except Fed) vehicles are definitely not exempt here. I've had to get my work vehicle tested for years now. It's a real pain when they don't pass. Diesels are on the hit list here, they will likely be outlawed as soon as any viable replacement comes along. Stationary diesels have a very short time they can smoke on start up and thats it. CNG is very popular here now. Smog laws have definitely made the air better here. They are a costly pain in the butt but they work. My hometown has some of the worst air in the nation but it is mostly from construction/farming dust and diesel engines not gasoline engines. Funny how a person notices things. I was not fond of Cali's smoking ban until my last couple of trips out of state and found that even the no-smoking sections were too full of smoke. I used to never notice. | ||

It has always been the discretion of the officer doing the citing. Sure they have their noise meter, and maybe an emissions meter too. But on my morning commutes, the cops have 'warned' me out of two neighborhoods. Not cited yet, just please dont roll through here with that bike.... Luckily both officers were customers of mine, they were running an "emphasis" patrol. Glad I was doing the speed limit  (yeah so I have the race pipe on it, you should hear my Harley!) | ||

$0.02 from north of the border. long time friend works as a tech consultant with the RCMP. After a number of fiascos last summer with different groups, apparently the crews here in the Okanagan are getting portable db meters with logging capability. They'll have the capability of spot testing cars, trucks, and bikes this coming summer, with the emphasis on diesels, and bikes with aftermarket/no mufflers. He wasn't sure the exact regulations they'll be using, but basically, if its over the rating (96db?) at 6(?) feet from the exhaust exit you'll be looking at ticket, vehicle impounded for mechanical non compliance, and a walk home. has to pass provincial mechanical inspection before registration is renewable and/or the vehicle is permitted back on BC roads...not sure what they'll do to out of province and international vehicles. be warned if you're headed this way. | ||

mikej - Government vehicles in CA have not been exempt for several years. Government entities must test and report thru a fleet program. |
