Anybody know the proper order to tighten up the exhaust on my 00 X1? Is it header to muffler or other way around? Thanks afdx1 |

On the XB's, you want to mount and secure the muffler first, and then tighten and properly torque down from the back to the front. That is muffler first and then the header pipe last. I think this method puts less stress on the header while installing the muffler. Drake |

AFDX1 I have tightened the header bolts first, then the clamp to the Mounted muffler last. to me the condition of the mounting hardware is the prime concern to avoid failures. |

I install and align everything loosely first. Then I tighten everything in order from the headers to the outlet. I consider this to be the best procedure to keep anything from shearing. I do the header bolts first because I am most concerned about THEM snapping. |

I am an exhaust outlet to muffler outlet guy as well, with one extra step in there. After snugging, IE finger tighten, everything, I start the bike and let idle til the header pipe is warm to the touch, about 15-20 seconds or so. After shutting down and letting cool off a few minutes, I then tighten from the header exhaust outlet to the muffler, to specs. After about 20-50 heat cycles, IE warm ups and complete cool down, I retighten everything again. I have never snapped an exhaust mount or bracket, never had a gasket failure, or any issues with removal of said pipes later on down the road. I believe that the initial vibration/shaking movement settles everything, removing the stresses incured by improper or stressed installation. I have owned 2 tubers, and now my XB, with all manner of exhaust systems. Just me method, your results may vary. Bruce |

Thanks for all the help. My X1 finally got its retrofit kit. They stress related to tightening the header bolts is unreal. So far so good, I did have a leak from the header when i started it up for the first time. After riding it around the block twice, it stopped leaking. It's gonna be high 60's today in Iowa, so I'll be giving it a little workout today. |
