it took me along time to come up with this design. i was big into the red, white and blue color scheme for PACBOG, in honor of the fact that Buells are American-made, and the graphic on the shirt is supposed to represent Mount St. Helens, with the stylized S1 at the top signifying an eruption. yeah, i know, i have a vivid imagination. Blue Groove Northwest went so well in 1997 that the NW Buellies demanded more. to which i happily agreed. thus, in 1998, SPLASH - SPort Lap Around St. Helens -- was born. the name of the gig was one of those happy instances where something just pops into your head with very little conscious effort, and immediately you know it's right. my idea was to emulate BGNW in at least one major aspect -- an adventure ride up onto Mount St. Helens -- but this time, instead of riding up the volcano, hanging for a bit, and then beating feet back to Metropolis, THIS time we would spend the majority of the weekend actually on the mountain. on Friday afternoon July 17, 1998 we all rendezvoused at Horseshoe Lake Park in Woodland, Washington, in the same spot that Erik had spoken to the BGNW attendees exactly one year earlier to kick off THAT event, and we partied, drank, swam, drank, partied, went water skiing, partied, drank, drank, and partied some more. the next morning we headed out, retracing the route from BGNW, up thru Cougar and on up the volcano. it was an awesome day, and for anyone who might be reading this who has not had the fortune to ride St. Helens, you have no idea how great the roads up there are. we spent the night in Packwood, Washington. for a recount of that night's festivities, see my description of our frivolity at Horseshoe Lake Park above. about the only thing we didn't do in Packwood was swim and water ski. which is not to say there weren't some water sports going on... on Sunday we curled around the north side of St. Helens and came up from the west, hooking up thru Toledo and climbing up to Coldwater Ridge and Johnstone Ridge. it was a great weekend of riding, with an awesome bunch of Hooligans including a sizable bunch of Canadians, and in the end everyone said, "More!" so the next year we did it again, and SPLASH has been happening every year since. in fact, to my knowledge SPLASH is the longest-running Buell-oriented ride in the world. next year will mark the 10th anniversary of Blue Groove Northwest, the gig that spawned SPLASH. altho i moved to California not long after the '99 SPLASH event, the troops up in the northwest, spearheaded by Chris and Loni Taylor, the Wood Family -- Mike, Kimberlie, Matt & Co. -- and Bob and Debbie Gussenhoven, have taken the ball each year and run with it, and i'm proud and pleased with the job they've done of putting this ride on. it takes a lot of work, and these guys and gals do an amazing job. Ah,the American Sportbike Festivals--now there were some great Buell events!! A great ride through the surrounding hills,a weekend of racing,Battletrax, demo rides, and a Buell track school(heck for a bit more money you could use their bikes for the school),too bad they gave it up. Some unbelievable memories from those events---walking through the pits to see Erik deep inside one of the ProThunder bikes because the Triumphs had qualified faster and he just knew there was more HP in the bike. Being asked by the demo guys if we would mind helping move the demo bikes from Streets of Willow to the demo area over at Willow (mind???),helping Reg Kittrelle get the Battletrax area set-up at Streets of Willow late one afternoon when he asked us if we could hear a "noise" from his Battletrax bike, maybe one of us could ride it and see? Ken Douglas hopped on the bike and then headed out onto the track--not really what Reg meant but there was no one there to tell us no---Reg watched for about 1/2 a lap and then jumped on his S-1 and headed out. There were about 6-7 of us that ended up using the track without any interruptions, basically til we got tired.Having Ferris following me around the Streets of Willow and see the con-trail of smoke from the side of my riding boots because we were leaning over so far. The hospitality set-ups were great, the whole deal was so worth the cost.Buell folks from all over the US and Canada came to these, sure wish they still did it!! |

My addiction can't be blamed on Court. But here's a peek at my Buell Shirt collection.
Well most of it anyways as there are a few late additions that haven't made it in there yet, like the Jeremy McWilliams shirt that arrived Friday and some other straggling shirts. Ferris has some pretty cool shirts unique to his part of the country, whereas I have some pretty cool shirts unqiue to the factory and it's employees, as well as some older cool Buell shirts that were available to everyone (but most newbie's haven't seen). Ratherthan just taunt you with the group picture, here are the first of about 80 pictures I took of the most interesting of the 100+ shirts in the closet this morning. Here's the Daytona '92 shirt (I have a few of the non-Daytona '92 version of this shirt, but for some reason I couldn't find the pink one I know I had...):
Stupid me used the shirt for doing oil changes when it started to fade...
Then there's the 'Engineering That Moves You' RSS shirt:
The 1995 Employee only shirt:
Notice the style of Pegasus (the best I feel!):
With the S2 on the back (the drawing by Mike Samarzja was almost as nice as he did with the actual bike):
To finish this first installment off, here is a totally one of a kind shirt that I found at a Holoubek seconds sale. Thanks to my Mom for informing me of the sale back in '94 or '95. The printing is kinda small and only on the back:
Any ideas why it was a second?
If there is any interest I will continue in installments with the rest of the pics as it is a time intensive process of rotating the photos and resizing for badweb. Highlights include some more factory only shirts, old Homecoming shirts, cool Buell shirts from around the globe and, of course, the Buell shirts from the heyday of cool Buell shirts from Buell. 1313 |

With the S2 on the back (the drawing by Mike Samarzja was almost as nice as he did with the actual bike) the Thunderbolt S2 is, IMO, one of the loveliest motorcycles ever made. that is an AWESOME shirt. |

I would LOVE to find one of the S2 shirts and one of the top of the page (I mean the first one in the thread....). Man, why don't we have decent shirts like that now? There are some seriously cool shirts shown here. Keep um coming! Brad (Message edited by bluzm2 on April 23, 2006) |

No big collection here. Just two. Until about two weeks ago I had only one. I've owned my bike since 1997. I bought a Vanson (Buell) jacket recently off ebay and the individual threw in this shirt. Pretty cool of him!
I got this one from the dealer I bought my bike from. Must have been from a ride here in N.E. Ohio? I wore it to death...

Since S2pengy took care of the '96 full line shirt, 1000th Buell shirt, and the S2 sweatshirt, I have a few less to share. I honestly didn't think anyone outside the factory received either the '96 full line (or S2 only) shirt or the 1000th Buell shirt. But then again, I've been wrong before. Heck, I didn't even get the Buell Ride '95 shirt until I won it today on eBay. So for my next installment: Road Stripe lightweight polo. (factory only, I believe)
Road Stripe heavyweight polo. (factory only I believe)
Most have probably seen this Pegasus shirt,
but what makes it unique is what's on the back.
I contributed to Uke's being the #1 Buell dealer for 1995 by buying '95 S2 #1313 from Keith on 06-06-95. I'm relatively sure this was factory only and I have no clue what the Buell Academy was.
but the motorcycle leaned over is reminiscent of the early Buell demo trailer graphic.
the back looks like this
The S2 'fairing' T-shirt. (I also have the button up but there is something special about this T-shirt.)
Again on the back is what makes the shirt special.
I took a friend to Uke's where he bought '96 S2-T #321 from Keith and contributed to Uke's being the #1 Buell Dealer for 1996. Next up are some very heavy (made for the winters in Wisconsin) sweatshirts. Ever wonder where the oval logo came from?
Here's a low-key, unassuming Buell shirt.
However, the back is not so low-key or unassuming.
You gotta admire a motorcycle company that prints a wheelie pic on one of their shirts.
Sure wish I had a copy of the original version of the dealer marketing video showing someone on a S1 pulling a wheelie... To end this session, here is my favorite Buell shirt. It is simple, understated but it has been with me on nearly every motorcycle journey I've been on. It is very thin, but it is very warm. Perfect for layering other layers on top or just wearing as it is. I wish I would've bought more of these, but am thankful that my Mom was able to close up a hole that I had in it when I was home for this past Christmas.
(Plenty) More to come, 1313 |

Some way cool swag. Not to change the subject. Rather interject a slight sideway slip and comeback. For you long timers. I am looking for some Buell content in the form of pictures. Specifically from Daytona 92 and containing a very particular RS. You know the one, the show bike. Now back to the original programming. |

Brankin: My black one, like yours, goes on every journey. I wear the Buell Academy every week. That was Howard Kelly doing the wheelie and the shirt send the folks in legal into a tizzy! Great stuff. I wish I had some Buell shirts!
