From Wikipedea.....The current MotoGP speed record of 343km/h (213.1mph) Stop and think about that for just a second. I've been about 175mph on public roads a few times and it seems to take a lifetime to get past 165mph. It's like the world slows down and tunnel vision becomes the norm. But man does the horizon come at you fast, even at 140mph +. But 175mph, and beyond, that's like what Senna said about racing at Monaco when he saw God. Now I remember reading when I was a kid about top speeds of cars and stuff, and like 175mph was a place only racers and rich kids went to and beyond. What must it be like to ride a bike at 213mph. That's on a race track, where the straight probably isn't even half a mile long. That is an awesome amount of speed, and I want some of that. That is the best drug ever. Nearly better than sex even! 213mph on a race track. I can't imagine how that must feel. Your heart must be pounding so hard it would feel like it's coming out of your chest. Awesome!! Rocket |

Rocket, nice comments. Those fleeting moments we mere mortal have of elevated speed like those you speak of are burned in our memory forever. A few of those moments, real low and fast in Military Helicopters, assorted motorcycles and a car or two will fondly be with me for the rest of my days. But the engineer in me always thinks of the hundreds of things at or beyond their failure point...and then I lift. Would'nt it be fantastic to be able to get there more often, in a less legally and physically disastrous way? But then surly the specialness would fade to the mundane. |

Is that 213 average speed or top? |

213 is the record top speed attained. Now think that not only are you traveling at 312.5 feet per second, but you are doing so in close relation to two, maybe even three other riders that are all shooting for the same small area of track to beat you through that first turn! And you have to be able to brake like a mad man and tip it in while being controlled. I am in awe during every MotoGP race at the incredible amount of skill and balls the size of grapefruits that these riders must have. Damn it, now you have me all flustered thinking of MotoGP and there is no race this weekend.....Rocket you are a mean person. |

how do you think it feels to have the transmission grenade and lock up the rear tire and kill the motor while trying to break 200 on a bike back before there were ones to do it out of the crate. friend had an early late 80's early 90's(at that time only a couple years old) zx9 that we had had vance and hines build a motor for. shaved as much weight off as we could just because we wanted it to hit 200. well anyway, me being the tall skinny guy that weighed maybe 125, and the one everyone figured was nuts anyway, got the honor of always doing the speed runs. since it was a small town and we grew up with half the cops they would always do radar runs for us when we were building cars and bikes. 197mph on the radar and the tranny let go. gear tooth got stuck in between the teeth on another gear and killed the bike since the wheel locked up. needless to say it was a hell of a ride and i never did end up laying it down but i poked a hole through the flat spot in the back tire with my little swiss army knife while we were looking at it. thats how thin it had gotten. only reason it didnt blow was that i finally got it to dislodge that piece of gear and start rolling again when i was slowed down to about 60 or 70. |

I rode my uncle's turbo'd Busa to 212mph on the GPS and it scared me. But it was probably the single most exhilarating thing I've ever done. Changed my view of speed forever, it's amazing how fast the world moves through a helmet visor at that speed. 145 on my Buell, 176 on my friend's R1. Doesn't even come close. |
