My opinion is that the media always likes to play up the bad and never the good. All I ever seem to hear about in the news these days is the doom & gloom of whats wrong with things and never anything good. Of course bad things are much more sensational and its always the few actions of the bad that make it worse for the good. Unless you were at the scene of that incident its going to be very difficult to judge. I don't think all traffic cops are bad, I too have been stopped on at least three occasions for doing stupid things on the bike (wheelies through intersections, speeding etc, etc) and let go with a warning and no ticket. Just my opinion!!! |

My niece's husband works for the Wisconsin Highway Patrol. I know him and have met some of his coworkers. Out of uniform and at a barbecue they seem like regular folks that have a job to do. They don't have any interest in "hassling" you. If you're exceeding the speed limit, they'll pull you over and issue a ticket. If you're driving drunk, they'll arrest you. If they have reason to believe you have commited a crime or are driving a stolen vehicle they will stop you and question you. They have a job to do that does serve a useful purpose, but is almost never popular with the public. Yes, there are some bad apples but I believe the vast majority are honest and hard working. |

No cop you are bad because you justify the actions in your statement. That says allot about you and how you do your job. You are sick, you like to push people around and you only wish you could come here a teach me a lession. You know its true inside. Your a cop because you feel a need to control people. You are a bar bouncer with a badge. You want it all but you can't have it. You are the 5% of sick cops. And the entire thing is on tape if you read the article and follow the link it has it. |

So, just because I offer a view that differs from yours Blackmotorcycle I am a corrupt cop that mistreats people. Please, you don't know me or anything about me. It is obvious that you harbor disdain for law enforcement and I don't know or care why just don't bring me into it. All I said was that you don't know the whole story because you weren't there. Where am I wrong in that statement? You weren't there were you? Yet you post like you were without knowing the full story. All you know about this incident is what the media tells you and that is a fact. I am not saying that officer was right in this situation but it's easy to sit back and armchair quarterback any situation after the fact. It's another story when your there and it's happening to you. |

I personally think the entire enforcement of speed limits...except for in school zones and cities...is useless and soley to increase revenue. Back to the dog killer issue...don't most LEO's carry mase? I have only been stopped twice without a ticket. One time in PA and once is GA. Back home in WNY most traffic cops are total jerks...unless one happened to be your friend. |

I wouldn't say I harbor disdain for law enforcement. I would say my opinion is changing after recent events not only with cops but with gov coruption. In most cases I have supported the police. I just don't know how a cop could read that report and say what you did. I'm going to try and get the vid. Then we shall see. I mean the report says the dog was wagging its tail playing, and they have the vid to back it up so I doubt they lied. I would think a cop who cared about how people are treated would say that the actions were disgusting. You of all people should be outraged. As for my issues with authority. I wish I could explain the things I experanced as a Whistleblower in the Fed gov. Its just not something that is easy to explain. People think your a wako. I'm telling people, the government is being filled with criminals, and they answer to nobody. excuse my typos, i have a broken hand. |

blacksickle, I saw the video on the news a few times. The dog was a full grown pit bull mix. He was trotting dead on for the cop. I cannot be sure if he was postured to attack or not. I can say that a wagging tail doesn't mean squat. The cop should have held his fire or fired a warning shot for sure, but it wasn't like the guy was out to commit cold blooded pet murder. I was mauled by a St. Bernard when I was a little guy of 11 years or so. I tell you what, after that, I would have rather put a bullet through an unfamiliar dog as look at one. Took me a long time to get over it. I'm now educated in canine body language. I'll tell you another thing, Blaster/Ben, anyone who claims that they can defeat an attack dog with their bare/gloved hands is either a fool, or one serious bad ass. And even a serious bad ass will get long odds on getting the better of a 100 LB Pit Bull let alone a 180 LB Bull Mastif or St Bernard. |

I deal with dogs all the time. (Go postal! Yea Lance Armstrong & the U.S. Cycling team! ) 1} didn't see the incident in question, damn shame about the dog. 2} if you can take a dog bare handed without injury, you are a Serious Bad Ass. With a tool (bat, wrench etc.) & a clue as to it's use, you are still in trouble with anything out of the toy class. 9mm pistols are too small for a Mastif, I want a boar spear & a backup with 12 ga Slugs. 3} mace don't work on dogs. At All. Pepper spray only stops them if they're not really upset with you in the first place. 4} most cops are good, (ok a whole discussion on WHY they joined the pd can be amusing, I lean toward the "they like to speed" theory) some very few are pond scum, I've met both. I myself am not all that likely to go nuts & shoot my co workers, but you never hear about the guys that save the people in the burning house & walk away before the reporters get there ("had to finish the route" ) so my fellows have a rep. ( former girlfriend had boss die in her arms at an "incident" in CA) "I prefer to avoid imperial entanglements" (star wars) But if pulled over, I know the drill, the poor shlub is scared to death, not knowing if this is the pcp crazed cop killer he's been warned about (and seen on late night cop shows on tv). Courtesy & Honour. |

Think about the poor guy who did nothing, handcuffed, on his knees, begging the cops to close his door so his best friend doesn't get out and run over, then they blow his head off. Put yourself in his place. At any rate. I don't hate cops. I was just pushing Mada, didn't like the way he didn't care for the poor people who had this happen to them. For the record I have met nice cops. |

I think a dog can seriously mess a man up and the dogs body language means little. A friend of mine was at his girlfriend's house and he bent down to pet her dog, they had not been dating long but the dog had "met him before". As he tells it, the next thing he knows he is on his ass and his face is bleeding. He said that he did not spook the dog, but it was a Shepard and I'm told that they are fear bitters. Anyway, a quick nip to the face got my friend about a dozen stitches and a date at the hospital. |

Smaller dogs like border collies & such can be taken out real ez by just about anyone with their bare hands. But a full grown Pit or as Blake says a Bull Mastiff is one bad mother. They wont stop fighting till they are dead & their whole body is full of muscle. I have been bitten once about 10yrs ago by a neighbors Husky & it happened so fast I didnt know he hit me at first. Then my hand swelled up & off to the hospital I went. Big time pain. Saw one episode of cops years back & the K-9 unit attacked some dude who was amped up on some good dope. This dog latched on the guys arm & he just picked the dog up & kept walking as he's punching this dog. It was hilarious. |

DYNA there is know way that you think you will defeat even a Border Collie with your hands a completely pissed off animal is in know way going to let you get there hands on them.Although Bullmastiffs generally don't get 180 lbs. but sometimes do, they would yes have there way with you and you couldn't do anything about it. |

acording to a vet (animal doctor), a wagging tail DOES mean something . . . .it indicates the doggie analog for nervousness . .. it ain't that rover's pleased to see you (tho he may be), he's nervous about confronting the alpha male or female in his pack . . . just about even odds that he'll roll on his back, exposing his belly or go for your throat, especially if it's not a dog you know. this IS an unfortunate happening, no doubt, and it appears that the officers in this case did not react appropriately (lots of examples of that, for sure,) but, again, but to say that they represent the behavior of all cops is just plane stupid. |

I think alot of the frustration on both sides comes from the legal system. If a cop comes across a genuine bad ass or some nut off his meds, the cop is really against the wall with what he's allowed to do. This screws with his head and ultimately they end up treating the average guy on his way to work the same way they would treat the murdering nut case. Once I was pulled over and didn't grasp what the cop wanted, he started ranting about how he could impound my vehicle if he felt like it, bla bla license bla bla. I yelled back that he could get away with shooting me if he felt like it, but what do you want? He instantly calmed down once he realized I wasn't challengeing his control. Then we removed the spec code plate off the trailer and he didn't even write a ticket. Teenage girls don't get tickets or have police problems because they have no problem with acting like a little girl, yes sir you are so masculine and in charge. Teenage boys are forever and always going to get tickets since they don't want to be emasculated, I'm 19 and I know everything. There should be a class on how to deal with cops and keep your dignity. But I still believe there is a guns n'gang mentality, a us vs them thinking, that goes with most state troopers. |

Well said....I have yet to have a "bad encounter" with the law, including the "3 times in one day" incident in Ohio (enroute to Pocono in which I ended up, having "gotten to know" the officer, sitting in his car, playing with the radar while he wrote the ticket) incident. The funniest part of this story, of course, was HOW I got off the tickets and rivals the NY State Trooper in the Mustang of July 12th, 1995 story. Court |

Blake how could you know this: I saw the video on the news a few times. The dog was a full grown pit bull mix. To me this is one of the main problems, some one asumes or guesses it was a pit bull mix, and immediatly gets scared, however it could have been an am staff, american bull dog and in some cases a bull dog, i have not seen the video, and will not pass judgment on either side, however it is this short sightedness that really bothers me. Now if the dog was poorly trained(which i have to admit, seems to be the case) then it becomes the owners fault, but in reality most people will rush to judgment as soon as they make the leap from dog to pit, a good example is the AKA, if you have ever been to a show, you will find that the "pit bull" in reality an am staff, are always shown first or at least in the AM, why, because of this asumption that there a bad dog, in reality most people dont realize the the pit bull, am staff was the most popular dogg in the 50's, pete was a pit, along with several others seen in older movies, however due to poor owners, they have become the menece of the dog world, I personally will never own another dogg breed for as long as i can, i have owned 2 and plan on breeding this month, and you ever meet a properly trained Pit, you might be amazed( i have seen them out do Rotts/shepards in a shutzin class) Sorry for the rant, and no offence to Blake, just this pit bull thing always gets me angry (here is an interesting fact, did you know germany out lawed anything pit bull related, and killed the entire breed there last year, people were actually contacting breeders in the US to take there dogs, all shipping paid, just to save there lives, and pits are not in the top 5 for bit dogs this year, seems ashame) |

APBT link There are many/several breeds that get grouped into the same category, such as the dog with the circle around it's eye in the old Kids movies and the more recent Spuds McKenzie commercials. |

I just watched the vid. I am sick to my stomach. The dogs playfully jumps out of the car and the coward cop shots the little thing. There is not justification for what I just watched. The cop should be charged with murder. |

Boxer BullMastif Mastif Bulldog Rottweiler American Staff. Staff. Bull Terrier Bull Terrier Mini Bull Terrier ChowChow(probably the one breed I trust the least) And just to show how some public perceptions can go, people would regularly ask me if my Chessie was part Pit, mainly due to his blockheadish appearance. |

People past judgement on the Mastiff because of its size but in reality they are for the most part BIG TEDDY BEARS and nothing more. They are not known to be aggresive but never cower. But the BullMastiff is known to be aggresive meaning just to be more of a one owner dog.The mastiff is not known to be a biter and not on the so called bad dog list. |

Is a Pitbull like an American Staffordshire Terrier This is an interesting question, which leads me to believe you have first hand knowledge, and that it is a loaded question, but i will give it my best, I do not consider them the same dog, the AKC, and the UKC do not consider them the same dog, breeders who have 20 plus years experience in the breed do not consider them the same dog, however some outward appearances would lead most to believe that they are indeed similar, this also however applies to the american bull dog whos genetic make up at this time is so poor, that there are some pups from the same litter who can vary widely looking like the above mentioned dogs or being twice there size(i have seen them as big as 120 lbs) so i will say that they are not the same dog, and i can recount an incident at the chicago international dog show, when an uninformed audience member referred to them as pit bulls and was verbally abused for about 10min, until he had to leave just to get away from the yelling My final answer: No, but i am an owner, soon to be breeder, and will never own another dog breed(my wife is another story) and if you like i could post a pic of my staff with a 4 year old girl, or a 3,6 and 10 year old boy, all of which cried the day i went to go pick her up, after a longish vacation, or pics with the toys these kids bought my sassy for christmas, or the pics that were put in the family calander this year, but i am a little biased and i really feel that all dogs are good, but a lot of owners are idiots, no matter the dog Before i forget, Nice post MikeJ, very cool and i will pass it along |
