This was posted by a doctor over at the Cycle World forum...

WARNING: VERY GRAPHIC IMAGES OF INJURIES SUSTAINED IN MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

Cycle World Forums

This is not meant as a discussion on helmet laws, but more for a sobering look at what could happen out there, so everyone ride safe!

Jim,

That stuff is just plain scary. I showed the pics to my girlfriend (a frequent passenger on my Cyclone), she's now asking me about higher-quality riding gear for herself.

Thanks for posting. More new riders should be forced to look at these pictures before hoping on a bike.

i totalled my kawasaki zrx1100 last year, i was wearing my boots and a full face helmet however, only a t-shirt(dumped it at about 55 mph). normally i wear my leather but i was just going to the store to buy some butts(1/4 mile away). needless to say ROAD RASH arms, knees, back, ouch!! now i always think twice b4 leaving without my jacket, never been in a bike accident b4 that for 15yrs. ironically after totalling my eddie lawson replica i discovered my new love,

Other than the driveway I have never ridden with out boots, jeans (at least), helmet, glove, jacket. I wish I could wear my full leathers more but it is just too hot here for that to happen more than occasionally. Those are frightening photos. I probably should have passed on them tonight (I just ate)

i showed these pics to a friend of mine that i ride with every now and then. He frequently rides with only tank top, shorts, and helmet... he says now that he will look into those "nifty" joe rocket jackets that i wear... pritty much scared him a bit i think...

scared me....

That's why I had a link up there instead of posting the pics...brains, ewwww.

in any event, I'm glad to know that even 1 person is more interested in getting some protection for riding, The "gross" factor in these photos are worth it for that alone.

Ride safe all.

Having been grabbed off a news site, the pics might be a dead link in a matter of days. Thought it best that these have a more permanent home.
Yep, that's why I have 3 helmets and all the other good stuff too. And still adding to it. I'll be printing them and sending to my dad as well. Gotta get him past those stupid 1/2 helmets. Of course I could just throw them out when he isn't paying attention and replace with a shiny, new real one! hmmm...

I'm not sure the helmet would have made much difference to him. Notice the way his head is twisted and the skin is ripped open at his neck, allowing us to see his slimy innards. I'd like to know the story too. All I found out was he was on a ZX-7.

It doesn't look like he did a lot of sliding either...jeans and jacket look relatively intact...

Looks like something that almost happened to me. A power line had dropped down across the road, about neck level. I saw it and ducked seconds before it might have been too late, using a "get down" hand signal to warn my G/F. She was about 2 car lengths behind me on her Sportster. I circled back to warn some others but fortunately a power company truck got there before me.

Man, wishing I hadn't just had lunch ... that's some pretty gruesome stuff.

I always wear full gear, all the time, and it's for reasons like this. I've also seen pics with people wearing full gear who have sustained serious injuries as well, but it would have been a lot worse if they hadn't been wearing any at all.

Guess this is a good message for all those guys out there wearing shorts and t-shirts zipping by me at 120 on the interstate.

For the anatomically challenged,

The slimey inerds that you see are the base and back of his skull. That mound of tissue on the ground are his brains that fell out the bottom of his head. I have worked countless accidents and this is not a closeline injury. A helmet would most certainly made a difference in the extent of injury, although may or may not have saved his life.

Talk about "graphic content"... Just sort of clicked this topic...

I love bikes. Always have. Just hate the fact that these sort of things can be part of it...

This may be a stupid question!!!!!!!!!

Was that mass on the ground brains???

This really makes one good argument for protective gear, I feel like showing this to the guys that wear the skid lids and call them helmets.

Totally gross but effective.

Bryan,

I must disagree with you a helmet is a tool no more no less. It is the appropriate tool to be used if your concerned about protection from head trauma. My comments above were merely stating fact as I studied the photos. My knowledge stems from 23 years as a practicing paramedic, an instructor in anatomy & physiology, and too many motor vehicle crashes and post mortum inspections. I am still haunted by many of the thing simular to this that I've seen through the years.

Does this make me fear the motorcycle as it has with so many that I have worked with? NO. It has though made me very conscious of personal protective gear. My favorite statement that I first read here is it is better to sweat than bleed. I practice this and also preach it whenever.

The poor gentleman in the photos is gone, but he can help to convince even a few to reconsider dangerous practices that affect not only them, but also their friends, families, and us through increased insurance premiums.

I appoligize for the rant, this through my career has become personal. Please forgive me for the long winded statement.

Ray

Ray,

Never say you're sorry when you're right.

Road rash and brain scatter makes one forget all about sweating.
