Anyone busted will be screaming PROFILING!!! and a half decent lawyer will probably get them off the hook. They can increase enforcement, but they can't increase enforcement -on motorcycle riders exclusively- can they? kind of like cracking down on lower priced vehicles , or non-white drivers right? |

Hmmm... How about they crack down on the number of drivers who, cut me off, try to run me over, merge into me, pull out in front of me and use the "I didn't see him.", etc. |

"increase in biker fatalities is 40-plus" -ABC That's the doctor-lawyer harley crowd, not the squids like you'd expect. Which is worse, kids in flip-flops on inlines, or fat old guys on Fatboys? Betcha the ricers are the ones that'll get pulled over. |

I'm curious, they keep pulling out the statistic that more riders are dying this year than last(it's in the H-D Enthusiast this month too), but no one ever say's how many more riders total there are this year, or how many accidents involved cars, or who was at fault. I hate when people use statistics for shock and awe, but don't back it up with useful info. |

Ya the stat thing has no weight to it when the facts aren't there. Example, was there another vehicle involved, driver error, alcohol/drugs, etc, etc. How about fatalities in bicycling, golf, hunting, trail hiking, ......oh I forgot those are "acceptable" sports in our society. Its just the press tryin to stir things up. With the price of fuel we should be highlighted as a form of transportation that saves fuel and is very easy on the roads. I know the "bad sportbikers" are recklessly driving, what about the import cars and hot rodders are we doin road stops etc for them too? I still tell riders I see out doin fast riding to DO A TRACK DAY! |

go to the dmv website and research how many more registered motorcycles there are now vs 5 years ago..... its almost twice as many..... thats why there are almost twice as many deaths..... its simple math... |

...or how many accidents involved cars, or who was at fault A car is at fault in 2/3 of all motorcycle fatalities. They should be targeting reckless and inattentative drivers too. (Message edited by chainsaw on August 27, 2005) |

Officer to be ticketed in crash with motorcycle Squad car responding to burglary ran stop sign with siren turned off By DARRYL ENRIQUEZ denriquez@journalsentinel.com Posted: Aug. 26, 2005 Waukesha - District Attorney Paul Bucher has instructed the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department to issue a New Berlin police officer a $160 ticket for running a stop sign while his vehicle's siren was deactivated and injuring two motorcyclists. "He should not have turned off his siren before going through the intersection," Bucher said Friday. Officer Richard A. Helm Jr., 27, was responding to a call of a daytime burglary in progress in June when he turned off his squad's siren so as to not alert burglars of his arrival, according to a sheriff's report. He did continue to run his emergency lights. He headed south on Swartz Road and did not stop for the stop sign at Racine Ave. His squad car, traveling about 35 mph, collided with a southbound motorcycle on Racine Ave., the report says. The motorcycle driver, Thomas Templin, 61, of Muskego, suffered serious injuries. His wife and passenger, Linda, 56, also needed hospital treatment. Helm was placed on administrative leave following the crash, New Berlin police said. Helm could not be reached for comment. New Berlin Police Chief Gary Blunt was not at the police station Friday. Police spokesman Lt. Dave Dunn said he could not comment in Blunt's absence. New Berlin also is facing a $5 million lawsuit related to Helm's fatal shooting of Michael Moreno, 39, on June 1, 2002. Helm shot Moreno twice in the chest in June 2002 when he had a knife in his hand while standing 121 feet away from the officer. An inquest jury has found that the shooting was justifiable. Moreno, who was suicidal at the time, had told workers that he wanted police to shoot him, according to testimony taken at the inquest. Moreno's family has filed a $5 million claim against the city as a probable precursor to a lawsuit. |

...Helm shot Moreno twice in the chest in June 2002 when he had a knife in his hand while standing 121 feet away from the officer. If he was able to double-tap a guy at 121 feet, he's quite a marksman with a pistol. Might have had the confidence to let the knife wielding guy get a bit closer before resorting to lethal force. Just an observation... |

I hope they fire and hang Helm physically. I drive/ride through New Berlin quite a bit and I sure don't want to run into an idiot like that. |

The New Berlin cop is a real cowboy, IMHO. I've been following the shooting thing since it went down. They are trained to shoot if a knife-wielding suspect is within 21', not 121'. Not totally surprised at the inquest whitewash. Waukesha Cty. is very "law and order". Get on the wrong side of the law and you may end up dead. Be careful out there! |

About 1 minute and 9 seconds into that video, there is a shot of a BMW R1200GS. That's Vicki Johnston, currently #19 in the '05 Iron Butt Rally. Go Vicki! |

quote:"We have a system where motorists can call into our headquarters and give information on locations, description of motorcycles they see driving in packs, location and time," said Stalworth, Illinois State Police. You can call *999 or any emergency number to report reckless motorcycle driving. If you see speeding motorcycles coming up behind you...
Hmmm, I wonder if they'll respond to calls about reckless car or truck or van driving? Or how about packs of commuters doing 20over? |

In all fairness, as a motorcyclist, I have *every* interest in getting these packs of squids off the road. Wheelies through traffic, 20+ mph over the prevailing road speed, clapped out bikes and little gear. If they want to go someplace private (or at least empty) and do this stuff, and they don't claim the resulting damage on their insurance, more power too them, its none of my business. (And post the video when you wreck, they are great fun to watch ) But keep it off the busy roads. My wife and kids are there in the minivan. |

before we hang the leo above remember the press gets it wrong, 121 ft? could that have been 21 ft? IMO to far away to justify shooting UNLESS inocent bystanders were needing protection. as far as running the Rider and his wife down, the cop needs desk job, that was stupidity! Yeah. I could see getting one chest shot in at 121', but not two. By the time you took aim for the second and squeezed off the second round, the perp would most likely be on the ground. A 'double tap' at 21' is far more likely. |

and a quick solid double too, even with a 9mm sad about the older couple that the LEO ran down no facts here but IMO kind sounds like the young man is a bit of a cowboy, good reason to put him behind a desk, the younger professional LEOs' do not need the black mark nor does the town's enforcement personel, 2 in the chest hits at 121 ft if the young man did that maybe he should be instructing on fire arms accuracy, to make that shot would require a very high degree of skill.
