I was burned bad with a tuber and swore I would never put myself in the same situation
Well, you know there are going to be first year issues. I doubt they will be awful, but given that you got burnt before, you might not feel like dealing with them. Keep an eye on it for a year and see how it does. |

I got burned on a tuber as well, then I put on long pants and kept my leg away from the headers and all was good.

OK here goes.
'03 XB9S
3000 miles belt broke. My fault for twisting it while changing the rear tire.
5000 miles belt broke. Bad belt.
20,000 miles stator screwed the pooch. Buell fixed on their dime.
35,000 miles belt broke, I went beyond it's life expectancy by a couple of thousand.
The '04 and later XB's have a much better belt system.
37,000 miles on my bike now, there'd be more for sure if it'd only stop raining.
It's a keeper. |

Lurch,
I love to ride off road as well. If I was looking for an all-around bike the KLR650 or Uly seem to be the answer (not mentioning BMW or V-Strom). I have a DR650 that can go 100mph but with knobbies on it it starts getting squirrly at 65. The bigger bikes would be really hard to ride some of the single-track I do up in Minnesota. They would be ok on the 4-wheeler and snowmobile trails.
I don't think I'm as tall as you but that's what makes those bikes nice since I can still easily touch the ground.
I still prefer the acceleration of the Buell motor over others that I've ridden. It just has that feel that makes it fun. |

You should not need convincing to get what you want.
If someone got to talk me into something then I really didn't want it in the first place.
We have had all minor problems with the Tubers and some major problems. My 98 is still on the original Oil Pump Gear and this winter I'll pull the pump and inspect it. If it blows up in the interim then I have an excuse to make it better.
Prior to my S1 I had a KLR650 which I nicknamed "the Urban Assault Vehicle", it was big and lumpy but lots of fun on trails and goat paths. I missed the fact I could basically go anywhere, anytime while riding.
Last summer I picked up a DR650 and the first thing I tried was to ride up the side of the Ski Hill on the West Coast (Marble Mountain). Mike can remember the height of that one. Looking at the Ulysses I would certainly attempt to do the same thing however there are places my DR has been I would not imagine taking the ULY.
Next summer I will be getting another ride, and it was down to the Big BMW GS or a Ural (yeah now for something totally different). Now its down to the Ulysses or the Ural.
I'd say the only convincing you need will be a test ride. |

I don't want Lurch to buy a Uly. Don't do it, lurch, it is a piece of crap and will strand you just like the tuber did!
(Actually, I want a Uly for myself and I don't want Lurch buying one that I might want.)

Actually, it's warranty $$ vs. units manufactured, but the idea is right.
Trust me, no one including Ferris, of the folks (there are 3 now) who want XB12X's to ride around the world are going to approach what the Ulysses went through in testing.

I'm already convinced but am not giving up my S-2 which is off getting "performance enhancements" from a former sponsor.
The XB is a rock solid platform. I'm already convinced, but hey....you know me.

hey newf- easy on that 'we all' hocus-pocus...
i have had NO issues with MY S2. Period.
And also, newf, why the he*l would you go anywhere NEAR a ural? i've worked on 'em, a lot. they are honestly, trash, in so many ways the site hasn't the bandwidth to decribe.
how can you say there are places you would not imagine taking a uly...try one out, first.
i take my S2 and any airhead boxer to all kinds of places that many dualsport guys wouldn't go.
for all the "hey- the uly is NOT a dualsport" rhetoric, i see a handlebar crossbar, aggressive tread pattern, longer shock travel, and a wild rear shock that tell me otherwise. i think we all need to try one out, first, a si intend to take one out in some whoop-dees and grab some major (12' plus) air with one. |

Court...How about the foot deep MUD river that they rode the bike in,back and forth untill the mud was caked into the pulley and belt and NEVER did it stop the bike..!!!!!!(nor break the belt!!)
I doubt most know that this bike has been around for almost 2 years being tested!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Lurch,
My first Buell was a problem child too so I understand your wariness. I will do my best to give folks my impression of the XB12X. I am picking one up from Daves in Appleton in about two weeks. I will then embark on a two month 20,000 mile journey all over the U.S. to celebrate my retirement after 20 in the Army. I am not much of a writer, but again I will do my best to let interested folks know how the bike performs. |

Ok Tramp,
Why not, bring me a Uly and I will put it throught the dirtiest boggy turf that exists to known man.
We may need a helicopter to remove it but Hell I'll give it my all.
I only wish I had a camera with me last summer when I sank the DR up over the rear tire in bog. I was by myself and after 1hr of huffin and puffin I finally decided to push the bike over on its side to get it unstuck. Picture a 230lb fella standing up on the side of a very nice DR650 while almost jumping on it to free the wheel. Once it was out on on its side I dragged it sideways about 10 feet to more solid ground.
Then passed out from exhaustion.
OH well, the wonderful world of off-road. |

Congrats on the retirement and the new bike! Please keep us updated. 20,000 miles on a Uly will make a heck of a story! If you're around my area (WI IL IA tri-state area, or anywhere within a few hours of here) give me a shout and we'll have a little BBQ, some riding and then some beers.

The reason I ask is because I ride an area near the Marbles in NorCal. Is that the Mt.? |

Marble Mountain is on the West Coast of the Island of Newfoundland. One of the Best Ski Hills on the Eastern Seaboard.
