Wouldn't it be great if HD/Buell would specify the grade of lubricant required for the tranny like they do for the engine? It's frustrating that they continue to specify only "Sport Trans" fluid.

From what I understand its actually illegal for a manufacturer to mandate the use of one specific brand of part or maintenance material unless they provide it free of charge. I think it is in relation to warranty issues/law. I'd sure like to know if that is true. Anyone know for sure?

I think you're right Blake... But I can't say for sure! I just replaced the Sport Trans fluid for some Mobil 1... What a freakin' diiference!!! It shifts soooo much better. I'm hooked.

That's good to hear. I too am still amazed at how much improvement resulted from the 75W90 synthetic that Nallin Racing put in my tranny. I'll not be using the new quart of Sport Trans sitting on the shelf.

Yrah, I really wasn't really expecting much, but sure changed the character of the shfting. A lot of the 'clunkiness' was gone... A neighbor that IS Mr. H-D won't buy into this though... He'll ONLY us H-D oils and fluids. Talk about not wanting to step out of the box!... Next oil change I plan to switch to Mobil 1 synth oil too.

Blake, I've used Pennzoil 75w/90 lower gear unit synthetic for out boards for 2 years and it has worked great. I not sure how much cheaper it is but no tranny failures and smooth shiftin. PS. I did a tear down this winter and evry thing was well coated after sitting since last July!

Brad, it was the only weight available at Checker Auto... It was 75W-90. A worthwhile investment IMHO.

Ok on a slightly different track, since my warrenty will be null and void when I leave the country in October I'm interested in how well the 75w90 works as a replacement because that's gonna be easier to find in Japan that Sportster tranny fluid

Just for the record, I have been using the 75w/90 for 7432 miles as of last week end(a little over 2 years) no tranny problems, no seal detioration. It seems to shift better in all climates. Noted I have no actual proof other than feel. Mabey Aaron can run some dyno tests on them? Pulling my trannsmission to look at it over the winter, The gears were in good shape, every thing is well coated, bearings were in good shape and no nasty black gunk build up in the case! I use marine lower unit oil for out boards and am not sure about if the properties are different for automotive grade( I suspect they aren't acording to the Pennzoil web site) Just my $0.02

Hey, isn't this the same "song and dance" that the dealers told us about not using synthetic oil in the motors?

Years ago I sold my extended warranty back to Harley, ignored the break-in procedure after 50 miles, use Mobil 1 in the motor and Redline in the gearbox because these old time H/D mechanics kept lying to me about what I should use and what I should do.

This was one of the problems I had with Roger down in Alabama. All the guy wanted to know was "Harley, Harley, Harley." That's why he couldn't keep oil filters in stock (all he'd buy was Harley parts and they were on perpetual backorder). What, only Harley sells oil filters?

Now, I figure the real engineers at Harley must know better, but when are the stupid marketing yahoos going to get a clue? And when is someone going to turn the computers on at the dealership level. We are living in the 21st century!
