The fat nasty tank/cover on X1's are hard to replace, though...unless you want to put several hundred on an aftermarket aluminum tank. S1's require less changes to make them "right". I'd take a newer M2 over an X1...but really, any Buell is a good choice!

No, it was kidding...not touchiness.

My canned response was similar to Erik's (by the way I have saved ALL the posts he posted on the S-1 before the "no internet" edict was issued) ..... "most the time I am riding this bike the seat is the last thing on my mind. By the time I think about it, it's time for fuel and the moment you stop you are beseiged by "wazat" questions."

This was particularly true whislt wringing out a particular YELLOW S-1 in the S-2 and S-3 routes in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park of Southern CA before you folks laid eyes on them.

Geeesh....everytime I stopped, BMW folks from everywhere with tons of questions.

The S-1 is a legendary bike and the seat was a key part of the styling.

S1 S1 S1 S1

Just love the plain look of it.

I would love to own a S2.

The big questions here on the board is:

WHY DID YOU SELL IT?

If you dont like the seat on the S1 then replace it with a Corbin, I got one and it makes a big difference on long trips. Don't even think about the seat because by the time you have to stop to gas up you don't get a chance to get sore.

Court,

Any chance that you could share the S-1 posts by Erik? I am too new to Buells to have seen any of them, but intrigued by the idea of reading what the creator of my S-1 had to say about the bike.

Cheers,
Semi

OK I took the S1WL. I have had both the S1WL and the X-1 at my disposal for 2 weeks and now I listened to all of you. It has 3000 miles on the odo. A Carbon fiber pipe, cams (not sure which ones yet) a Super E with a Thunderjet (probably will swap out for a Mikuni), and a Forcewinder. I paid $4,000 for it - Good Deal???
As for the big question - I sold the S-2 because I got a good offer on it. I was the original owner (bought in Feb 0f '96, a 1995 model, #20 of 86 Cali models made). It had a hard life - Bartel's H-D caught it on fire when it had been there for service and they left the gas on and hydro'd the cylinders. They pulled the plugs and hit the starter and caught the shop on fire. I got rearended in Denver at a red light doing $4,000 damage. Anyway I was offered alot of money for it and away it went. Naturally I missed it immeadiately and went shopping. The S-2 is still the best looking Buell made to date but the S-1 seems much more fun for raising hell, and more comfortable for playing for this 6'1' 225 lb animal. Any one want to buy a 2000 X-1 Red Racing Stripe with only 138 miles on it for $6500???

Oh yeah and I recently bought an S-2 in decent shape at a dealer auction for a friend and only paid $2,600 for it so the $7,500 I got for mine seemed real smart at the time

Court,

Post some of the writings of Eric on the S-1.

Why was he banned from the BBS anyway?

Which is the better Hooligan????

All you need to know is the X1 answered the needs of some of those folks who complained the S1 was a little raw (pussies). Front brake and seat are two of those things that spring to mind. Consequently, the X1 could never match the S1's hooligan status, simply because it was intentionally designed to be less of a hooligan. Anyway, it's freekin obvious just by looking at the pair of 'em

Here's my $.02. I love the S1W, but I own an X1. So in order to fufill my needs I had to remove the fuel injection, make it 88", install dual front brakes and polish the sh$t out of it. Now it looks and performs somewhat like the S1W I never had.

I agree with Rocket. S1's are the purest Buells there be!

I wasn't actually doing any of it to make money. As I watched the price of used Buells plummet (at least here in Cali) I got scared of losing my ass and that's why I sold the S-2. When I found the S1Wl and X-1 I coudn't resist because I knew I had sold one of the best bikes I ever owned. I work in the Harley industry and that has spoiled me becasue Harley's hold their value so well. I just wish Buell's would do the same. By the way I am having so much fun with the S1WL that the '01 Ducati 996S in my garage is feeling neglected. The Buell is just so much more fun. The Duck is faster than "Whitey", stops better, handles as well if not better, but is just no fun to ride at anything less than race speed. I think it is now for sale too! $22,000 bike outdone by a used $4,000 one - who woulda thunk

All my buddies have S1 bikes, I'm the only one with X1.. now i'm always the leader of my pack because none of them would hang with me around anything I do! All their s1's look good and runs like a raped ape but I always beat them with a X1 and the only one with a hooligan look....i.e flat black tailsection and all my plastics are flat black and looks alittle rough but runs mid 10's in the 1/4 mile plus long 10 mile wheelies! Soooo who's boss!!

in the winter of '97 i was given the keys for a day to one of the first White Lightnings to hit the Pacific Northwest (thank you Destination H-D/Buell :-), and subsequently wrote a piece about my experience for Sportbike USA.

(um, this would be the issue that had a photo of me on the cover, spread-eagled over the back of a police cruiser while Officer Friendly--not his real name!--searched me for weapons above and beyond the bad-ass white Buell sitting there all innocent...)

the last several paragraphs of that story follow:

"At the end of the day, after the sun had flamed out over the horizon, I grudgingly turned the bike and keys over to it's owner, and reflected on the impact by the S1WL on the world of motorcycling.

"This machine should be selling like gangbusters. The price is right ($10,599), the performance is even righter, and it's got The Look. As has been the challenge with Buells from the beginning, the trick is getting people to ride 'em, so the addiction sets in.

"If you haven't ridden one--even if you already own a Buell--visit a dealer with a demo and ride it. Your life will be richer for the experience. Bring your competitive brand-riding friends, and let 'em all ride it. Make an event out of it, 'cause that's what this bike is--a rolling event. It's a block party, waiting for a place to happen. It's Jay Leno on speed.

"If it's been awhile since you laughed out loud while riding a motorcycle, the White Lightning's got your name written all over it."

Ferris :)

If you've ever driven a Citroen or Maserati with the hydrodamnwhateveryoucallit type brake\suspension system, you'll know what I'm talking about if you've ridden an S1 and an S1W.

The early S1's had a front brake to die for. Just touch the lever and it was there, just like pressing the brake pedal on the Citroens or Masa's (but for different reasons) .

As I understand it, reports went back to Buell that most folks who rode the early S1's couldn't cope with the ultra sharp front brake. Personally, I think they missed the point because once use to it, the feel was bloody excellent. Alas, Buell bent to the customers needs with the later S1W's and increased the bore and piston size in the brake master cylinder to 'soften' the feel.

Aaron, remember you heard it first from Rocket

Is that why the S1W front brake doesn't feel half as good ass my old S-2 (with the PM caliper).
By the way if you have ever seen the Black Saphire S-2 that was featured in the PM catalog a couple of years ago, that was mine. I had the dual PM RACE system on it for a while but liked the lighter mass and less gyro feel of the single and eventually went back to the single. If you really want to try a front brake ride my Ducati 996S - SCARY

In y2000 i bought a new M2. Sitting beside it was
a used (8000 miles,i think) Orange with blue nuc.
frame,c.f hamcan,V.H.muffler,P.M.s-1998 S1W,priced at over $10 Gs.Ive always regretted
not getting that bike,it seemed too much $ when a
new X1 went for the same.If i knew then what i know now! I think the S1W are and will probably be the only Buell(except the real rare early prototype Buells)collectors bikes,American hot
rod, like a classic 65 vette. If you see one and
like it,grab it

Of COURSE you KNOW where I ring in on this thread...S1s RULE over the 'Committee Bike'!!! At the Dyno Shootout in Vallejo...S1's took most HP and Most Torque. And of COURSE the stylin' of the S1 is simply pure Buell. I 'retrofitted' back to the cast iron brake, upgraded to the 99 M2 steel brake line in front, put extra padding on my seat, did a 'few mods' to the motor (mine had the most torque) and upgraded to the '01 isolators and shock. Mine has over 70k miles on it, and of course I am getting the '2002 S1' NEXT WEEK from MODESTO. What is a '2002 S1'??? Why it's the XB...definately NOT a 'committee bike'!!!
