Well, I was a huge Rush fan. To be honest, I haven't cared for much since "Test for Echo" and in fact, didn't even buy the last album (own all others) but have heard everything off of it. Too me, it started going downhill lyrically with songs like "Dog Years". My favorite stuff is most any of the 80's albums, such as "Grace Under Pressure", "Power Windows" and "Signals" although "Roll the Bones" and "Counterparts" rank up near the top for me as well. I really expected something more from them after "Different Stages" as their musical style has made major changes after each live album. It didn't happen though. Rush used to be a very musically progressive band and while they are still an insightful band, I feel the songs have become a bit to commercial and formula driven (ie. verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, verse, chorus). As for "Vapor Trails", given the solo projects and the obstacles faced by Neil, I really expected a major change in their music but it didn't happen. I've found myself instead filling that musical void with Dream Theater. (Message edited by pcmodeler on April 19, 2005) |

Need 2 categories, live and studio. I'd vote 2112 and the bonus disc (disc 3) from Different Stages. |

Moving Pictures captured me from the very first riff! Story that changed my opinion of them- Living w/roomate in San Antonio. They were due for a concert that night and he ate, breathed Rush. He would always go out and cruise down town looking for the tour bus to be picking them up. He found the bus and followed it to their hotel. He parks at an angle in front of the bus, everyone runs to the entrance to meet the band. They come out and have the Shi(s)ty attitudes towards everyone outside. Didn't give one autograph or picture. To add hurt to injury, he got a ticket from SA's finest. I know his parking in front of the bus didn't help, but their attitude was crud before they stepped out the door. Now meeting the Scorpions was a different story, but I'll not highjack the thread. |

Caress of Steel, 2112 or even Permanent Waves. I used to love All The Worlds a Stage when smoking weed. I haven't really liked them much since Permanent Waves, got way too commercial |

Wow, what a tough question. 30 years worth of albums, for me, it is a hard decision. Maybe I can narrow it down to seven or so. 2112 A Farewell to Kings Hemispheres Permanent Waves Power Windows Hold Your Fire Vapor Trails I have seen the band 7 times in concert, front row for the Roll the Bones tour. The last show I seen was the 30th Anniversary tour. We took our kids (at the time 9, 10 and 11). It was cool to watch them play air guitar to 2112 and have as good of time as us adults did. On Saturday night I am doing a photo shoot for one of my friends tribute bands and the head lining band that night is a RUSH tribute band called Vital Signs (www.vitalsignsband.com). From what I can tell, they are not too bad and should be a fun night on Saturday. |

I forgot about the very 1st album. It had the raw sound. Nothing like "working man" to get you in a party mood. Kinda like the Amboy Dukes "Stranglehold" |

Well put Josh! Best Studio Album - Permanent Waves Best Live Album - A Show of Hands I know every Rush fan has an opinion on "A Show of Hands". If you haven't heard it, go pick up a used copy on Amazon. They go for a buck these days. Just as a side note, Rush is sorta before my time (I'm 24). However, many of the metal bands I listen to now, cite Rush as a major influence. Particularly the drummers i.e. Nick Barker (ex- Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir). So, over the past 3 years I have become familiar with most of the Rush catalog. I believe that a true music fan should check out all of the angles. That includes the past. It works both ways too! Do yourself a favor and check out some of the newer stuff out there. I recommend "The Sham Mirrors" by Arcturus or "Follow The Reaper" by Children of Bodom. |

Moving Pictures is the best studio album. I think to really appreciate how good a band is you have to listen to their live albums. A Show of Hands is a great example of how a band should sound when you see them live. If you don't believe me, listen to a Linkin Park album then listen to them live. It's a real artist that can sound as good live as machines make him sound in the studio This is the point where I have to hide my Jay-Z/Linkin Park album I love so much! |

If you really want to be impressed go see Dream Theater in concert some time. As a musician it is a very humbling experience. |

"Fly By Night", "2112", "A Farewell to Kings", "Hemispheres", "Moving Pictures", "Vapor Trails"... After seeing RUSH in concert five times and following them for 30 years, it is hard to pick just one. All of their albums have a "favorite". I still enjoy reading Neil Peart's articles and books on his two-wheeled adventures. Keith |

I have to admit, I've seen them three times and if I'm lucky, I will be able to catch them in May. They are one of the best live bands. I still wish they would start integrating some of the musicianship back into their music (ie. odd time signatures,etc.). |

I think "Presto" was a great overlooked Rush album. I saw them on the 2nd leg of the "Test for Echo" tour, they did 2112 in its entireity. Awesome!!! |

Tough choice between "Moving Pictures" and "2112" and I still give "Caress of Steel" (best album title ever!)a workout. I saw Rush several times but the most memorable was with Max Webster at the old Market Square Arena in Indy. Almost caught a contact buzz just thinking about it! |

I've said this before, but my favorite Rush album is the one they haven't written yet. I'd like to respond to U4euh. I have been fortunate enough to meet and BS with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson and found them to be nothing but gracious and down to earth. You have to understand that just because they pour out their hearts into their music for us to enjoy, they are not pouring out their lives for us to consume. You have to separate them -as people- from the music. Granted that they depend on us for their livelihood, but that does not produce a debt that they need to repay to us. It is easy for some of us to reason that since they have formed the soundtrack of our lives and we have invested so much emotional energy into their music, that we have formed some sort of personal bond with them that merits a reciprocal relationship. This is simply not so. They do not owe us anything. And as Neil Peart wrote "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend". Maybe they were just really tired that night. Pcmodeler, you don't like Dog Years???? It is one of my favorites. I respect your opinion however. (Message edited by johnnylunchbox on April 20, 2005) |

Johnnylunchbox- I respect what you said as it makes very good sense. I,however was not expecting anything from them at the time, as my favorite band was the Scorpion's .My roommate was the huge fan, it was just a real let down to see the way that they treated the very few people who were outside dying to meet them. They basically walked out of the hotel and told everyone to get lost! Yes they were probably having a bad day and anyone who has been to San Antonio, particularly ST. Mary's street, knows that it is a place to party. I still love their music and that will never change, they rock. Just left a bad taste to see a good friend who was a loyal fan get shunned. He had autographed drum sticks, picks, usual concert goodies, hanging all over his walls. And I agree with the statement that he can't pretend that a stranger is a long lost friend, BUT a stranger who only wants to say hi and maybe get an autograph, don't shoit all over them because you have had a bad day. How would you feel if you met Erik and he treated you like that. I think you might feel the same as I do. You wouldn't hate your motorcycle any less or its' performance, but you might think differently about the man. |

U4euh - I hear you man. That's a bummer for your friend. I guess it just points out that they are people too and subject to their moods. It's a pity that your friend was dismissed and I would be disappointed too if I experienced the same thing. I just hope he doesn't take it too personally, that's all I'm saying. He may get to meet them someday and see that they are cool people. I'm sure Mr. Buell has his cranky days too LOL. |
