Does anyone have experience with running a radar detector? My S3 insists on cruising at 4000 rpm which equals 15 to 20 mph faster than the speed limit here in the state of misery. | ||

Ya, most of em I have seen go off at any microwave intervention, you cannot pass a store with an auto open featured door. I have a bel 620i SWB/Lazer+ Ill sell you for $75 pay pal bucks. Too many false signals in the city of Houston, but the lazer is always right. I wanna get a Phantom Jammer. | ||

I've got a Passport 8500. Yeah, it true that they'll false in town need automatic door sensors but if you drive in town mostly you can set it to City mode and it'll cut down on false signals. I chose the Escort over the Valentine because of price and size/weight. My Escort saved my butt this last summer on a trip to L.A. when the CHP setup multiple speed traps. In Expert mode the 8500 indicated that there were 3 traps. Kinda humorous watching cagers (with detectors) getting pulled over at the second trap 'cuz they thought the signal they were picking up was the first trap. Granted the V1 has the directional arrows. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that if the detector shows 3 signals and you've passed one trap that there are more up ahead. The V1/Passport 8500/BEL 980 are all good detectors. It all comes down to which features/strengths you want and how much you want to pay. Ray K. | ||

I bought a Valentine 1 recently. After time and practice, you 'recognise' how to interprit the information. For example, in town you learn what to expect along your familiar routes so it's the unexpected that you look for. I can't speak for other makes but the only downside of the Valentine 1 I have is it is cleary designed for use in a left hand drive vehicle ! Other than that, it should be a better defence against the 'enemy' than your eyes, which ninety nine times out of a hundred I bet it is. Rocket in England | ||

Escort passport 8500 here. Best radar detector made. Saved my @ss many times. www.radartest.com for test results showing it blows the V1 away. The V1 never shuts up, too many false alarms. Go to www.legalspeeding.com for motorcycle mounts and a wireless transmitter that lights a LED in your helmet (so you can see it cause you ain't gonna hear it beeping) when the detector goes off. They are set up for the V1 or the Passport. | ||

Hope it isn't vaporware. Lots of sales pitch and no pics does make one wonder. Might be a very good product, but like you say hard to know until you see it either live or linked. | ||

on the subject of Jammers. I have seen systems that actually Jam police radar. they were not store bought but rather cobled together creations of Navy electronics technicians. They worked and quite well but they weren't small nor would they have been cheap to produce. Te ones I saw were made from junk type spare that were being thrown out but things like waveguides aren't easy to come by. Anything that says it can detect a laser I have a problem with. Unlike a radar which is broadband a laser is a very narrow band transmission not a lot of spill over that can be detected much less jammed. Jamming lasers is a major black project for the US government. I can't imagine that any public company is gonna make something that wouldn't get federalized pretty fast. If your detector finds a laser, chances are you have just been caught. | ||

These guys were at the Intl Motorcycle Show here in Mpls. He had a couple of prototypes to show. Kind of a neat idea. I wish I kept the flyers he had, I could have posted them. The unit that I remember worked with an existing detector. You plugged in a transmitter to your detector's output jack. There was a receiver that you stuffed in the lining of your helmet. The helmet piece was very small. I seem to remember it being blue tooth but I could be wrong. It was self activating. It looked for a "carrier" signal from the transmitter and went into a sleep mode after you shut the bike off. No on off switch. The helmet part had a bright led that you let poke out of the liner at the edge of your vision. It was bright enough that you would notice it easily even in bright sunlight. On the example they had the led was on the left side of the helmet at eye level just barely poking from between the helmet shell and liner. It fit in a fold of the liner material and you couldn't see it from the front unless you knew it was there. While I was at the booth, 3 or 4 people put down deposits for the first available units. I don't remember what the price was though...sorry. Kind of a neat idea really. No wires, you can hide the detector and not worry about sound levels or seeing a lite on the detector. Brad | ||

Donn, It was a working prototype. He said something about waiting on the production cases or something like that. Even as a prototype it didn't look too bad. You could not walk away with one. Hmmm, no pictures but they say "The receiver is small in order to easily nestle between the helmet pads. Dimensions are approximately 2.0L x 1.28W x .5H (figures in inches)." That's a big chunk of hard plastic to stick between your skull and the helmet. No thanks. Put a small bright strobe light on the dash instead. | ||

I make an exception for my sunglasses, fully aware that in the event the helmet "goes to work" that I shall emulate a raccoon for some period of time as a result. CAVEAT: Helmet speakers are in some of my helmets but THINK when putting them in. Blake you are one fart smeller...... | ||

The BMW site for GS's had thread on this outfit, I e-mailed them and recieved no response.  It seems like a they're marketing a great idea but without any hardware.Too bad, it would have been great. | ||
