Riding the S2 home the other night my speedo died. Then I noticed that my turn signals would no longer self-cancel. Checked the KV for info on this but didn't turn up anything. Figured I'll pull the dash and check the speedo cable, but wondered if anyone had experienced this before. Ideas? Yes, same thing happened to me. turned out that my speedo cable broke, and my turn signals would no longer self cancel. I replaced the cable, and they worked again. The turn signals read off of the speedo I think, or I may be talking out of my •••. Take care, be safe. | ||

Mine gave out last fall. Just got around to investigating. Figured I'd find the cable broke. Unfortunately not. Nor, I think, the drive gear. The tab on the drive gear does fail sometimes, I remember hearing. But not mine. Friggin' speedo seems to be kaput. And now you and I will be bidding against each other when the next one comes up. And FMJ pointed out a metric one in Florida on eBay last year, going cheap cause of the metric, and I ignored it. Dang! So my question, are they the same on S1s? What year did they go electronic? On a working speedo, the turn-signal cancelling mechanism can be disabled by undoing the wire to the reed switch. That's what I did to the Sportster's. Hate the things. Cancelling just as you get to a turn so you're sitting there waiting to go left and the signal is no longer on!PITA!! (Message edited by Sportyeric on March 08, 2005) | ||

Yeah, the older bikes have the mechanical drive for the odometer & speedometer. First thing to check is the drive unit on the axle. There is a small tab that fits into the the rim - this spins it around driving the cable. You can test the cable by unhooking it from the back of the speedo and then spinning your front tire. If it indeed spins around, it might just be your speedo. I have an S2 speedo sitting in my garage, fresh in the box. They're $150 new...I'm sure I'd be willing to part with it for less...  And yes, the turn signal canceling is based off of distance driven. This is how they will stay on (once you're stopped) at a stop light, but cancel once you get going. Timing is a little short, though. I've had the same thoughts that Sporty had - turn it on early to give people plenty of notice and it's off by the time you get to the corner. I just got in the habit of hitting it again. | ||

I'll be borrowing a front wheel jack tomorrow night from my buddy's to check the drive. I have to do a fork oil change anyway. I'll probably know, then, by Thursday night if I'm gonna need the speedo. Put it on hold for me? | ||

No problem. I originally thought my speedo was busted after a slow speed dump so the insurance company paid for it...but it turned out the tab just snapped off the speedo drive. Voila...spare speedo...but it's just taking up shelf space now that I don't have the S2. PM me when you figure it out - just in case I don't catch the post. | ||

A few discoveries to report. First, there is no hole for a front jack to fit into. Gotta suspend the thing from the rafters. Second, the speedo drive has failed. Likely from inadequate lubrication of the cable. Third, the damn things are expensive. Note to self: lubing speedo cable should be part of regular maintainence.! | ||

Eric,the speedo drives are a weak point and fail if you sneeze at em>I have had one snap a tang and 2 cables break. | ||

My euro spec '99 M2 indicators don't cancel, & the speedo works fine. I thought they didn't have self cancelling so I just lived with it & regularly forget to turn em off! Any ideas? | ||

Grump-only Buells with the self cancelling are the S-2's--comes from their HD control heritage.All the HD's I owned had self cancelling.Don't know if you can add the module on to the later ones.It has a feed from the speedo,and I have no clue how it works. | ||

Innes; if you want self canceling turn signals, you can get a Signal Minder from www.kisantech.com. I've been using one on my 2000 M2 since fall of 2000 and I really like it. They're pricey, but I never have to worry about forgetting my blinker is on. They also have a provision that stops the timer if the brake is on, so it won't quit blinking while you're waiting for a light to change, or for a break in traffic. | ||

Ta for that Crusty, I'll have a look. Spent some time on my baby today, new instrument bulbs,new battery (it fairly whizzes round now) & a homemade spoogerator. If it works I'll post some pics.  |
