I have been periodically starting my 02 X1 in the shop every once in a while this winter, but I went out to have a wishful listen to my new pro-series pipe and it cranked until the battery went dead without firing. It struggled a few times but would keep it going. I checked the tank, and found it empty. No prob, put fresh gas in and it still won't start. I have spark, so I'm guessing it must be the fuel prime, but I couldn't find anything about that in my service manual. Help!!! The weathers beginning to improve!!! |

Do you have access to the Digital Technician or a Scanalyzer? If so, with a fully charged battery reset the AFV and you might as well take a few minutes to reset the TPS and check the timing. If not, new plugs and reset the AFV on the road by doing a 10 mile slog between 3-4000 RPM in 4th gear. |

"it cranked until the battery went dead.." You should hear the fuel pump start for a short time when you turn the key on (it then shuts off until the ECM sees cam position sensor pulses), and you should have gas (49 psi) at the Schreader valve (tire valve thingy under the left rear of gas tank) if the fuel pump/regulator is operating properly. The ECM doesn't look to modify the AFV until the engine is over 2500 RPM (and the o2 sensor is up to temperature), so IMHO I don't think the AFV would be out from cranking over empty. I started my X1 up last week (to hear what the stock muffler sounds like!), and I put a shipping blanket over it with a ceramic heater running for an hour blowing onto the engine (unheated garage) - started easily. I noticed my bike seems to shake less at idle (esp the flyscreen) with the stock muffler on, then when I have the White Bros muffler on - could just be my memory though.... |

Rule number one. Never start your bike in storage unless you plan on riding it for a few miles. It will only cause problems like, fouled plugs which is probbaly what you have. Dead battery, which you now have and You also form condensation in the motor which can cause corrosion. Now fix you bike and don;t start it till you plan on doin some serious riding |

Ditto to what Spidey said. Running the motor in storage without riding is bad mojo. |

Well, I feel like a chump... In what seems like a former life I was a service writer at the biggest Buell/HD dealer in western Washington State and I pull a dopey move like that... I checked it out today and sure enough the plugs were both fouled out. I wiped them off and it fired right up. I don't know if I actually ran it out of fuel or not. Thanks for the help, tough to hear, but sure saved me time and hassle going to the dealer. I don't get discounts anymore! thanks again. |
