So, as I've mentioned, my Defender was running like poo. My go-to for a Thunderstorm motor has always been 45/190/2.5 turns. Nope. Not on this one, it HATED it. Threw in a 48...meh...different, not worse...but I couldn't call it better.

So....I read the book (shhhhh!!!!!).

STOCK for a 98 Defender? 42/200.

200!!!

Well, since it's a bone stock bike, with a bone stock exhaust and bone stock intake...I put in a 200 with the 48. I also checked the needle and it had some aftermarket, blunt-tip needle in there with a c-clip to set height. Bag that, put a stock needle back in, no shims, and test drove it. Little soft down low, but hit 5500rpm? Holy CRAP! Blink twice and you're at 7000! This thing SCREAMS up top now.

Tomorrow's project is to lose the 48 and go with a 45...and see how it does.

But all that got me thinking about my S1W. For YEARS it's run fine; I've been happy with it, with a 48/195 setup. Full race kit - header, muffler, intake, and ignition box. But damned if that Defender wasn't running STRONGER up high. That's not right.

Read the book again. Shhh, don't tell anyone. Stock S1W? 42/200.

Pulled THAT carb off. It also had an aftermarket needle, this one with a VERY long narrow tip, the c-clip setup, and I'd been running 3 shims. Cruise throttle it had this weird surge/hiccup thing going on that I didn't like....so THAT got a stock needle again, too. Left the 48. Put in a 205 (again- full race kit). Also installed an LED headlight bulb that took longer than planned, trying to stuff a ballast in that housing...but I got it. But, it was now dusk and I've already hit one deer at dusk...so no shakedown ride tonight. I did blaze it down the driveway and back though (1000' driveway), and holy CRAP, it's a completely different motorcycle now. We'll see how cruise RPM does tomorrow, but WFO is FUN!!!

I'm also going to revisit my S2T. Stock for that was 42/165 (or was it 160? have to look again tomorrow, tired and too many fumes tonight lol) and I think it's running 45/190. May back it off a bit up top and see how it does (it is also bone-stock).

But damn, I'm getting tired of taking apart CV's....

Thanks for posting that info Rat, I have a s1W, race headers, pro exhaust, and mikuni carb. It recently started stuttering between 1200 rpm, and up to 3000 rpm, more noticable when cold, but still present when warmed up. I pulled the plugs, running rich ( black on both plugs. I have no where near the mechanical talent that you have, ( limited to oil changes, plugs) I have no idea about carbs, and jetting. I dropped it off at a local place, and waiting for a diagnosis. I recently put the holtworks tank on, and maybe a piece of debris from the petcock, got knocked into the carb?? But i just wanted to say thanks for your informative posts, they are very helpful!!

Well your Mikuni is going to be a completely different animal than the factory CV (in my experience a Mik tends to be more of an on/off switch)...but if something got caught from the tank, you'd likely have a lean condition, not a rich one.

I just spent a couple hours on the S1W (not quite 100 miles) and WOW, what a different machine now!

Pretty big jets, mate. Might want to either toss them on a dyno or at least test air/fuel some way---spent lots of dyno time with these bikes and usually that would show pretty darn rich--

I stepped the Defender slow jet down to 45, so it is now 45/200 (bone stock is 42/200). I also installed fresh plugs that I'll read after a days' riding to see how they're doing.

The S1W runs like a raped ape, no hiccups, no coughs, no dips in power....and the exhaust doesn't smell rich. I don't have new plugs for it, so I'll keep riding it for a tank or so and then check those plugs to see what they look like (and what the mileage looks like). But, with both bikes coming stock with 42/200....I'm not really that far above factory tune.

Well the defender loves the 45/200 setup. Runs like a champ. And even with the wrong jets, and draining the bowl countless times to change them (again and again)...it still gave me 40mpg! Can't wait to see how it does now that I have it all sorted out!

Now I need to get the rest of the Defender to behave lol.

80 miles in... side stand switch went wonky.
108 miles in, right saddlebag latch failed.
122 miles in, a wire form on the right saddlebag grabbed hold of the end of the belt guard and ripped it off.

...and...I need to rebuild the pogo sticks....er, forks.

It'll get there though. This things a HOOT!

Ah, but that will be a worthwhile endeavour indeed!

40/185 is stock for the S2. Pulled it apart today after I rebuilt it's front master cylinder (lever was soft and it annoyed me). I had a 45/180 in there - and I have no idea where I got that combo from. But I swapped it to a 42/185 (again, a bone-stock bike with factory intake and exhaust). One step up on the slow jet, stock on the main...and she runs great. Only took a short hop, but no bogging and great power up top. It doesn't quite pop on decel, but it definitely burbles more than it used to - if it weren't a stock muffler it'd be a pop. I might go back up to a 45...but time will tell.

Feels good to have em all tuned and running happy again! (And p-touch label notes on my box of jets!)

Now I need to ride something with fuel injection...so they don't get lonely...
