So, I put about 50 miles on it the other day and it starts/idles great, cruises great, and up to about 3/4 throttle runs great. Go past 3/4...it breaks up pretty bad.

6R12 plugs, which match the shop manual
45 slow jet
190 main jet
2.5 turns out on idle screw
stock airbox
stock header
stock muffler
99% sure stock ignition box (didn't pull the tail back off to check the PN, but it's not a Race part)
original coil and probably original wires.

My first thought is "replace the plugs". Unknown age and all that (but the electrodes look fine and as I said, it runs and idles smooth until WFO).

Next thought, the 190 may be too fat for an all-stock setup. I'll likely back that off to a 185. It doesn't load up at cruise so I think the 45 slow is just fine. I should check my (also bone-stock) S2T to see where I have that jetted...I thought it was 45/190 but it may be 45/180...

Next thought - I will adjust the carb float when I swap jets, to get a higher fuel level. Not sure if I'm starving the bowl or what....

Next - how often does a VOES go bad? It literally does fine until like 7/8 throttle and up. Nearly like a light switch.

Anyone have any tips for tuning a bone-stock (that's what's throwing me) thunderstorm motor? I could check my S1W but it would be no help, as it has the race intake, race header and race muffler. I think I have that at 48/195 and it's happy...

Still a fun bike to ride...I just want it all sorted out!

Certainly not a model I am very familiar with
but I believe you have a manual choke, no?

If you can easily get to it while riding, get above 3/4 throttle and when the engine starts breaking up, pull the choke on slowly. (And I know, it is an enrichener, not a choke, but the function is the same). If you are too rich, it will get worse. Too lean, it will clear up.

As an alternate, if the air box and cleaner are easy to take off, get to 3/4 throttle and partially cover the carb opening with your hand. Too rich, it will get worse.

VOES - Vacuum Operated Electrical Switch. IIRC it is an on/off electrical switch, activated by a vacuum. If the switch works, and the rubber hose servicing it is not carcked/hardend ect it should be good.

Hope this helps, Dave

And I goggled "What does an h-d voes switch do" and one of the results was a Delphi Forums column. I found it informative . . . .

Good call on the choke idea, I'll try that!

Yes, the VOES is exactly that - a vacuum operated electrical switch. My understanding is, it's the ignition system's "vacuum advance" switch - I'll try some google to be sure.
