Hi, 98 s1W, i want to put a sylvania headlight bulb in my Bosch headlight. It looks like i start by removing the screw at the bottom of the chrome ring. Do i need to take the side bolts that hold the headlight assembly off as well? And will i need to take off the fly screen? Any words of wisdom? thanks, Dan

You undo the screw on the bottom of the chrome ring a couple turns.
And pry with a putty knife in between the chrome ring and the black headlight housing.
Kind of a twisting motion and it has to pop off.
It probably needs some force to come undone
If it's not going then undo the screw a couple more turns.

Have opened a S1 and M2 headlight and both were hard to open!

I have a 96 S1 and I'm pretty sure the parts are setup the same as your 98 S1W. You should not need to remove the bolts on each side that hold the headlight bucket to the forks. Removing the 4 screws that secure the flyscreen will give you a little more wiggle room, but you probably don't have to remove the flyscreen. Once you remove the phillips head screw from the bottom of the chrome trim ring, you may have to carefully pry the ring loose but on mine the bits pretty much pop apart.

I pulled mine the other day, prepping to install an HID. My God, how did we survive with just halogen lighting for so long?? Those things SUCK.

The screw on the bottom is an anchor, there's a little clamp that it pulls onto the frame and holds it in place. The top of the light kinda hooks-hinges to the frame/bucket. As noted above, loosen the screw, then pivot the lamp up and out.
